Chicago White Sox 213 Chicago White Sox The Chicago White Sox professional baseball fran- chise has constantly battled for respect and attention since arriving in Chicago in 1901. Some of the lack of respect has been self-inflicted, coming from stunts such as uniforms with short pants, or a disco record demolition promotion that resulted in a forfeiture of a ballgame, one of the few in baseball history. The other source of disrespect comes from being in the same market with the Chicago Cubs, which has devel- oped an elite and special image in the minds of many despite having the longest championship drought in professional sports history. The past 20 years have featured an uptick in the franchise’s reputation, with the opening of a new ballpark (called U.S. Cellular Field since 2003) that seats 40,000 plus, and a World Series championship in 2005. The franchise began in 1901 when Charles Comiskey moved his team, the St. Paul Saints, to Chicago to compete in a larger market. Comiskey soon built a ballpark on the south side of town, named it after himself, and won two champion- ships, the last under his ownership in 1917.

    Can’t-miss listening is Pat Hughes’ ‘The Cubs Win the World Series!’ CD By George Castle, CBM Historian Posted Monday, January 2, 2017 What better way for Pat Hughes to honor his own achievement by reminding listeners on his new CD he’s the first Cubs broadcaster to say the memorable words, “The Cubs win the World Series.” Hughes’ broadcast on 670-The Score was the only Chi- cago version, radio or TV, of the hyper-historic early hours of Nov. 3, 2016 in Cleveland. Radio was still in the Marconi experimental stage in 1908, the last time the Cubs won the World Series. Baseball was not broadcast on radio until 1921. The five World Series the Cubs played in the radio era – 1929, 1932, 1935, 1938 and 1945 – would not have had classic announc- ers like Bob Elson claiming a Cubs victory. Given the unbroken drumbeat of championship fail- ure, there never has been a season tribute record or CD for Cubs radio calls. The “Great Moments in Cubs Pat Hughes was a one-man gang in History” record was produced in the off-season of producing and starring in “The Cubs 1970-71 by Jack Brickhouse and sidekick Jack Rosen- Win the World Series!” CD. berg. Ortega, indicating flexibility, called his plan “ a proposal, not an ultimatum." Contra leaders, react­ ing to news reports in Miami, criticized the plan and termed it "a proposal for anorderly surrender.” Ortega's 11-point plan was re­ ceived by Nicaraguan Cardinal Miguel Obando y Bravo, who agreed to act as a mediator between the two sides. The prelate planned to convey Ortega’s offer to the Contras and seek a response, opening cease-fire negotiations. The plan calls for a cease-fire to begin on Dec. 5 and for rebel troops inside Nicaragua to move to one of three cease-fire zones. The rebels would lay down their arms on Jan. 5 before independent observers, and then be granted amnesty. The plan specifies that Contras in the field are not to get any military supplies during the cease-fire, but would allow food, clothing and medical care to be provided them by a neutral international agency.
