News from Elham Primary School

Autumn is here which means it must be time for conkers, pumpkins and Harvest Festival! We were very pleased to be able to have our school Harvest Festival in the Methodist Church this year (we alternate between there and St Mary’s Church). The children shared their thoughts with poems, RAPs and facts linked to our theme of GENEROSITY. Our children and families donated a wonderful selection of items that have been collected by The Rainbow Centre in Folkestone. These items will go to help people who are less fortunate than us and help brighten peoples lives and hopefully bring much needed support and maybe help raise a smile! If you would like to read more about what the Rainbow Centre does please visit their website at http://www.rainbow-centre.org/

We are very lucky that Elham Gardening Society help us keep our garden in beautiful condition. They have been running a weekly club, working alongside our children and parents to grow some wonderful produce. This year we have harvested one massive pumpkin and lots of grapes and apples. We have also had wonderful crops of peas and beans, raspberries and courgettes to name a few! Thank you to everyone who has helped out so far this year! For regular updates check our website- www.elhamprimary.co.uk

8 On 21 September - a real treat - Russell Bowes gave us a most enjoyable and informative talk on the life and work of Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown, the man who revolutionised the then current ideas about the design of gardens. Many of the great gardens of today bear witness to the work and dedication of this man in the 18th Century. Russell Bowes, as ever, laced his talk with humour and anecdotes which made it all the more memorable.

On 7 October we held our Autumn Coffee Morning and Bulb Sale. This was well attended and was a most successful event. Elham’s gardens should look resplendent in the Spring, judging by the number of bulbs and plants sold that morning. It was a very sociable and enjoyable event.

The speaker on 16 November will be Philip Johnson who will talk about of our favourite flowers - Sweet Peas. Don’t miss it!

Another future date for the diary is the AGM on 14 December to be followed by the Christmas Party.

A group of us met in Café Rouge for a very convivial lunch. We then broke into two groups, some off to see the show Warhorse at the Marlowe and the remainder of us had a guided tour of the Cathedral. It was a glorious sunny day and the stained glass glowed. Our tour guide was an excellent communicator, lots of facts, not too many dates and many stories, some very funny.

Our next meeting is on 9 November in the Church Hall as usual, 2.30pm for a talk from Headway, a charity which supports those who have suffered trauma to the head, strokes etc. We look forward to seeing you all there for tea and gossip. Judith Ridley 840485

RHODES MINNIS CIRCLE

We were entertained at our September meeting at short notice by the Joskin Duo. We had a lovely afternoon singing along to popular music accompanied by Dave and Maggie. The competition was won by Diana Bennett, with Connie Burren 2nd, Mary Usher 3rd and Marilyn Norton 4th. On 22 November Jane and John Buss will present ‘Growing up in the Forties’. We meet at Rhodes Minnis Village Hall at 2.30pm and visitors are more than welcome (first visit free!). For further details please contact 01303 862913

Join us for an amusing and entertaining, if poignant, evening of Alan Bennett writing on 30th November, 1st and 2nd December. There will be two Talking Head monologues and a short play. Tickets are £8 each and are available from Laing Bennett in and online at lymingedramaticsociety.co.uk. The seating will be cabaret style and we actively encourage you to bring your own food and drink plus cutlery, plates, glasses etc. There will be two intervals to allow you plenty of time to eat your supper. Tickets go on sale on Saturday 4th November.

On 15th November we have another play in the pub, courtesy of The Coach and Horses Lyminge. Barbara Harris will be leading the reading of Habeas Corpus by Alan Bennett. Come along, have a drink and join in with this reading. It starts at 7.30pm. 18th November is the 90th birthday of our much loved Life President, Joy Bartley, who has given many years of devoted service to the Society. We will, as a Society, be marking this occasion and wish her a wonderful time celebrating her momentous birthday.

Mosaic classes in Elham

Come and join mosaic classes in my studio in Elham! Classes are held on Wednesdays from 12.30-3.30pm. I am flexible on time and it can be changed to suit individual demand. I want to make sure that young Mums could pick up their children from school as I am one minute away from the school. You can join the classes at any time - they are on-going.

If you are interested in learning how to mosaic it is easy to get started. Mosaicing is similar to doing jigsaw puzzles but you cut the mosaic tile yourself, instead of taking the puzzle pieces out of the box! It is good fun and creative and you do not have to have any experience. If you like creating and feel like trying something new then this might be just the thing for you.

The cost of the class is £10 per three hour session. Tile, mosaic backing board, tweezers, nippers (to cut the tile), grout and glue are provided. I have mosaic books to look at to get some ideas but you can also find many mosaics under Google images "Mosaic Art”, to give you some idea of the sort of things that you can create.

Please call Carolyn Ernest-Jones at 01303 840645 [email protected] for more information.

MONTHLY UPDATE

GOVERNANCE - Clive Stanyon – Chairman

Councillor Vacancies We are still in need of some new councillors to fill vacant positions, so please do give it your consideration. Please feel free to call me to discuss or, even better, come to our next meeting, on 6th November, at 19:30, in the village hall, to get a taste of how we work.

PLANNING - Clive Stanyon – Chairman

Planning Committee Our having just the one parish council meeting per month sometimes makes it difficult for us to respond to planning applications, in particular when these are received just after a parish council meeting, with the deadline for a response being before the date of our next parish council meeting. We have, therefore, set up a planning committee, and this committee will meet mid-month, each month, only when there are late planning applications to consider. These committee meetings will be open to the public and a notice for any such meeting will be posted on our notice board.

COMMUNITY & ENVIRONMENT – Clive Stanyon – Chairman

Churchyard Trees I am pleased to report that some churchyard trees have been trimmed of dead wood. Thanks to Councillor Geoff Clements, and the clerk, for arranging this.

Connect and Care in the Community By the time that you read this newsletter, an event aimed at helping older people in our community will have taken place, at the village hall, on 23rd October. This will have been run as a partnership between Age UK, Elham combined churches and the parish council and will have provided information about services and facilities available. Many stall holders were invited, and information will have been given out and discussions had. Free lunches will have been provided to those that requested them and there will have been a taster t’ai chi session for everybody to join in. It is certainly my intention to have a go. I hope that the parish council will be able to get involved in further community events in the future.

Defibrillator The parish council has resolved to have the defibrillator installed in the telephone box, in advance of doing the maintenance work, as we still do not have a quote for the maintenance work that we feel we can accept. Perhaps we could have a community project to do the maintenance, so that we can all be proud of the end result. I will give that some thought.

Fairfield Planters I am pleased to say that the new planters are now in place and have been planted up by local residents, led by Chrissie Upson. Another good partnership!

Remembrance Day Parade A reminder that Remembrance Sunday is on 12th November. Our clerk, Cathy Skinner, is working hard on preparations. There will, of course, be disruption to traffic immediately before, and during, the service at the war memorial, so please plan ahead with that in mind. Of course, it will be lovely to see lots of you there, as usual.

Elham C of E Primary School On 6th October, I was delighted to be shown around our school, for the first time, by the chairman of governors, Trevor Gasson, and the headteacher, Dan File. What a lovely school it is too, with some great space for the children, who, I must say, were very well behaved. The school has a bit of a problem with storage space, and is hoping to be able to raise funds for an extension, for which it already has planning permission. It would be good, I think, to organise some sort of event in which the school and the wider community can join together. Between us, we will give this some thought.

HIGHWAYS & TRANSPORTATION - Jon Worrall – Lead Councillor

Elham North and South Traffic Management We are still waiting to meet with a KCC Highways representative to discuss costings to extend the 30 mph zone to include Fairfield, Park Lane, and the eastern end of Exted Lane, to extend the 30 mph zone towards Lyminge, and to provide a footpath from the main road round the bend leading into Park Lane.

Traffic Mirrors Landowner permissions have now been obtained to install traffic mirrors opposite the Park Lane junction with the main road and on the bank opposite the exit from Cherry Gardens. Some insurance issues need to be resolved before the project proceeds.

The Square /Pound Lane A bollard between the lamppost and railings on Pound Lane at the end of the passage has now been installed by KCC Highways. Painting double yellow lines round the bend from The Square into Pound Lane will be discussed by Shepway District Council at the next meeting of their Joint Transportation Board in November.

Interactive Speed Sign This has now been moved to its third location where it will stay for two months before moving back to the junction of the main road and Old Road. Data from the device has been downloaded and reveals that the majority of excessive speeds have occurred on this northbound section, particularly late at night and early in the morning.

Street Name Signs A list of signs which need to be replaced has been submitted to Shepway District Council, and a response is awaited.

RECREATION - Clive Stanyon – Chairman

The Gore The Recreation Grounds Group, which includes Councillor Brian Swan, is still in active communication with the trustees of The Gore, with a view to negotiating a lease on this land. Naturally, these communications may take a while before there is anything substantial to report.

ANNUAL CONKER BASH RESULTS

Once again it was a great event and the Village Hall makes a superb venue, providing a safe space for the children to play between bouts. Competitors ranged from the age of 3 to considerably more and all ages seemed to be having a great time. Girls 7 and under winner was Phoebe and 8 – 11 was Ria. There was a tie in the boys 7 and under with Joe and Dexter sharing the honour. Toby won for the older boys. As usual, the 12 and over categories for both ladies and men were closely and fiercely fought with Lydia and Pete winning their respective classes. The grand final bash-off was won by Pete for the honour of the conker necklace.

Huge thanks to everyone who helped to make it such a success.

Dear Friends, We are now in Advent, that ‘space’ before Christmas like ‘pregnancy’ before the ‘birth’ and the ‘lull’ before the storm. It is nearly coming up for me living here for two years, as I was reminded by Sue a Grandma, whose Grandson William, was one of the first babies I baptised in Denton church. I sat next to her during the wonderful Harvest Supper in the Jackdaw Pub where more than a 100 of us locals, farmers and friends gathered to celebrate Harvest. ‘What a fabulous Night!’ Alison our proficient and hardworking administrator, ever since she has started working for us, has been waiting for a ‘lull’ but it seems to never come. But, Elham and Selsted School can now enjoy a ‘lull’ as they have done magnificently by both attaining a ‘Good Ofsted.’ This does not just happen! It is through a great deal of hard work from the staff, governors, parents and all those that help at the school to make them the amazing communities that they are! Dear God Thank you for the life of all humans and living things. Thank you for all the food and joy we have. Please have faith in the bad people who believe in the bad spirits! They can change! Help us to love and care for others. Believe in you. Trustworthy, faithful Mothers do not forget the Fathers. Please keep hold of the starvers. (A prayer from one of our children in year 6) Enjoy the ‘lull’ of Advent! This is a brand-new edition of the world’s well-known hymn book, which now offers the broadest ever range of traditional hymns with the best from today’s hymn/song writers. We would like to encourage members of the village and congregation to donate a hymn book at a cost of £15 per book. Your name and any dedication will be inscribed in your book. Please fill in the form which you will find at the back of the church and return with money to Pat/Geoff Webb or one of the churchwardens.

20 Church Events Knit, Knot, Net Next year marks the centenary of the end of the First World War. As part of the events marking this we are hoping to drape a sea of poppies from the top of the church tower, so we need your help.

KNIT - If you can knit or crochet then please make us some poppies. There will be a box in St Mary’s church to put finished poppies. There will also be a pattern for an easy knit pattern in church should you need one. Please leave a tail of wool near the centre for us to attach them to the netting.

KNOT – nearer the time we will be asking for volunteers to help knot the poppies to the netting

NET – we will need to buy the netting (heavy duty) and some wool so if you are unable to help in any other way perhaps you would like to make a small donation towards the cost. Please give this to anyone from the church, drop in to Willows, Cock Lane or put it in the chest in church in a sealed envelope marked POPPIES.

Diocesan Day of Prayer - Saturday 18th November 11.30am - 12.30pm

A diocesan intergenerational event will take place at St Mary of Charity, Faversham, which will be the central focus for the satellite prayer events throughout the Diocese. Bishop Trevor hopes that everyone across the Diocese will be praying at the same time from 11.30am-12.30pm. He will be encouraging those that wish (and are able) to fast from lunchtime on Friday 17 November to lunchtime on Saturday 18 November. ‘Fast’ can mean not only food, but social media, work etc. As part of this, do please join us for JUST AN HOUR OF PRAYER 11.30 – 12.30. 18th November in St. Mary’s Church, Elham

If you are deeply troubled by anything in your own life, the life and future of our country and the pain and suffering of the world, then bring those concerns and we will share and bring them before God in prayer. THEY MAY BE HIS CONCERNS AS WELL and those of many other people, which will be the focus of this Canterbury Diocese Day of Prayer, acting together as the body of Christ. ‘Positive action we can all be part of’
