Gilbert Abbott is one of the ocers who had the dubious honour to be reduced three times between and . He was rst reduced as lieutenant from Gibson’s Regiment (p. ) on February , but obtained a lieutenancy in Fairfax’s in Ireland on May following. Being one of the junior subalterns, he was reduced on May . He advanced to a fullpay commission as lieutenant on March , only to be reduced again in June . He found a more stable position in Lord Mountjoy’s newly raised regiment in June . In he had advanced as major of a regiment raised in New England, and took possession of the fort at Port Royal (later Annapolis) on the town’s surrender on October .
