Su obra In the Suicide’s Library. A Book Lover’s Journey (2010) explora cómo un solo objeto —un ejemplar gastado ya por el tiempo de Ideas of Order de Wallace Stevens que se encuentra en una biblioteca universitaria— es capaz de hacer el pasado visible y tangible en su pura materialidad. En la solapa delantera del libro de Stevens, Bowling descubre la elegante firma de su anterior dueño, Weldon Kees, un oscuro poeta norteamericano que puso fin a su vida saltando al vacío desde el Golden Gate Bridge.   • Introduction
    INTRODUCTION The wuxia film is the oldest genre in the Chinese cinema that has remained popular to the present day. Yet despite its longevity, its history has barely been told until fairly recently, as if there was some force denying that it ever existed. Indeed, the genre was as good as non-existent in China, its country of birth, for some fifty years, being proscribed over that time, while in Hong Kong, where it flowered, it was gen- erally derided by critics and largely neglected by film historians. In recent years, it has garnered a following not only among fans but serious scholars. David Bordwell, Zhang Zhen, David Desser and Leon Hunt have treated the wuxia film with the crit- ical respect that it deserves, addressing it in the contexts of larger studies of Hong Kong cinema (Bordwell), the Chinese cinema (Zhang), or the generic martial arts action film and the genre known as kung fu (Desser and Hunt).1 In China, Chen Mo and Jia Leilei have published specific histories, their books sharing the same title, ‘A History of the Chinese Wuxia Film’ , both issued in 2005.2 This book also offers a specific history of the wuxia film, the first in the English language to do so. It covers the evolution and expansion of the genre from its beginnings in the early Chinese cinema based in Shanghai to its transposition to the film industries in Hong Kong and Taiwan and its eventual shift back to the Mainland in its present phase of development. If you're any sort of fan of Shadowrun—whether you're a new GM, newbie player, or even a veteran—this prose will really help flesh out what sort of fun you can have with the system and setting. It's nearly 400 pages and about 130,000 words, so download this to read on your phone/laptop/ebook/commlink, because this will take a while. I'm Jarboot, a fellow fa/tg/uy and Shadowrun fan. Someone suggested that someone make a compilation of this story for easier reading, so I figured I could do it. Editing is minimal, but I fixed a lot of spelling and general syntax error, most of which were mentioned by TwoDee in a post following the original. There are some little Jackpoint-esque comments from other people from the threads included in the document, which are differentiated by a green color and indented text. I may have included a picture or two in there, too. Also, 2D likes to do some foreshadowing at some points, so keep track of the greentexted dates if you feel confused. All these threads (except number 3, which you can search for using some of the other tags) can be found by searching for the “shadowrun storytime” tag on the /tg/ archive. Jarboot is an extremely helpful fa/tg/uy, but this particular Anon is an impatient asshole who wanted a fully updated version of TwoDee's Shadowrun Storytime, including but not limited to the full Chapter 15 and Chapters 21 and 21.5.

    Article Xiuzhen (Immortality Cultivation) Fantasy: Science, Religion, and the Novels of Magic/Superstition in Contemporary China Zhange Ni Department of Religion and Culture, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Blacksburg, VA 24061, USA; [email protected] Received: 11 October 2019; Accepted: 22 December 2019; Published: 2 January 2020 Abstract: In early twenty-first-century China, online fantasy is one of the most popular literary genres. This article studies a subgenre of Chinese fantasy named xiuzhen 修真 (immortality cultivation), which draws on Daoist alchemy in particular and Chinese religion and culture in general, especially that which was negatively labelled “superstitious” in the twentieth century, to tell exciting adventure stories. Xiuzhen fantasy is indebted to wuxia xiaoshuo 武俠小說 (martial arts novels), the first emergence of Chinese fantasy in the early twentieth century after the translation of the modern Western discourses of science, religion, and superstition. Although martial arts fiction was suppressed by the modernizing nation-state because it contained the unwanted elements of magic and supernaturalism, its reemergence in the late twentieth century paved the way for the rise of its successor, xiuzhen fantasy. As a type of magical arts fiction, xiuzhen reinvents Daoist alchemy and other “superstitious” practices to build a cultivation world which does not escape but engages with the dazzling reality of digital technology, neoliberal governance, and global capitalism. In this fantastic world, the divide of magic and science breaks down; religion, defined not by faith but embodied practice, serves as the organizing center of society, economy, and politics. Moreover, the subject of martial arts fiction that challenged the sovereignty of the nation-state has evolved into the neoliberal homo economicus and its non-/anti-capitalist alternatives.
