JMJC Newsletter Issue 16 JMJC Excels in Ontario Toronto, Ontario - Athletes representing the Jason Morris Judo Center (JMJC) in Glenville, NY successfully competed in the 44th Ontario Open in Toronto held at the Abilities Center, November 8- 9, 2014. Burnt Hills High School graduate, Chris Alaynick (19) had an outstanding event picking up a bronze in the 81kg under 21 division as well as a bronze in the 81kg senior category the following day posting a 8-2 record overall. Burnt Hills graduate, Eric Skylar (18) continued his impressive run as of late taking a silver at the 90kg under 21 weight class and grabbed a bronze the next day in the senior 90kg division. Dave Harris (29) turned in his best performance to date picking up a bronze in 66kg weight class going 5-1 and Burnt Hills graduate, Haley Meara (18) posted a 4-2 record to win a silver 1 JMJC Newsletter Issue 16 medal in the 48kg under 21 category. The JMJC has now won a remarkable 84 total medals at the Ontario Open in its 13 year history. Bolen Golden Lincolnshire, IL - Brad Bolen (25) from the Jason Morris Judo Center captured the 66kg gold medal at the 2nd annual Irwin Cohen Memorial Championships November 10, 2014 held at Stevenson High School. Bolen went 5-1 on the day then was selected to be the recipient of the "Irwin Cohen Award" which is given to the most outstanding player of the event for his efforts. This event was hosted by the Cohen Brothers Judo Center and had nearly 400 total competitors. Bolen earned a nice pay day as well collecting the $1000 prize for the elite division winners. “Team Bolen” L to R: Emerson & PJ (Brothers), Isla (Mom), Brad, Emerson (Dad), Tony (Grandpa), Chatka (Grandma) & Larry (Uncle) 2 JMJC Newsletter Issue 16 Silver Lining for Bolen & Hejlik Wollongong, Australia - Brad Bolen (26) & Ashley Hejlik (27) from the Glenville, NY based Jason Morris Judo Center (JMJC) both made it all to way to the final in their respective divisions to take silver medals in the International Judo Federation's (IJF) world cup in Wollongong, Australia, November 14. The event in Wollongong (50 miles south of Sydney) was previously held in Samoa the last three years. This result keeps Bolen at the #31 spot in the world rankings at 66kg with 13 double countries ahead of him which means Brad is currently #19 in the Olympic qualifying. The top 22 (men) in each weight class is guaranteed a spot in the Olympic Games in Rio. Hejlik made a major jump from #137 to a career high #86 in 48kg and will also move to another career high #2 in the USA. 3 JMJC Newsletter Issue 16 JMJC OUTREACH Burnt Hills, NY - JMJC's Maria Dhami (19) brings Judo to the Charlton Heights Elementary School as she taught six gym classes over two days. For the second straight year, Steve Jones who is a Physical Education teacher there invited the JMJC to run Judo sessions for his classes. Jones is also the head coach of the Burnt Hills Varsity Wrestling team. "Coach Jones has been working with us to try and promote Judo as it works well with Wrestling" 4x Olympian and JMJC Owner, Jason Morris said. "Maria did a wonderful job" added Coach Jones. 4 JMJC Newsletter Issue 16 2014 All Sports Dinner at the NYAC Chris Alaynick. Nick Kossor and Hannah Martin attended the prestigious annual All Sports Dinner in New York City, Monday November 11th. Nick ad Hannah were being recognized for their yearly achievements and for being 2014 World Team Members. Brad Bolen who is also a NYAC member was invited as well but could not attend due to his competition schedule. Bolen won his second straight and third overall 66kg title at the 49th annual Dallas Invitational Championships, Saturday, November 22, posting a 5-0 record on the day. Bolen also collected the $1000 prize for first place in the elite divisions. Ashley Hejlik (27) continued her rise as she picked up her first Dallas Invitational medal going 3-2 in 48kg. The next day, USA Judo held it's President's Cup which is its second largest event of the year next to the Nationals. Dave Harris (29) was the star of the day winning his first Presidents Cup medal, securing a bronze going 4-1 in 66kg. This result catapulted Harris to a career high #4 ranking on the US roster. Hejlik also captured her first Presidents Cup medal, winning her second bronze for the weekend in the 48kg weight class. Kneeling: Eric Skylar 8 JMJC Newsletter Issue 16 Desravine Wins Bronze Veracruz, Mexico - Jason Morris Judo Center guest for 2 weeks, Linouse Desravine (HAI) won a bronze medal in the 52kg division at the 22nd Central American & Carribbean Games. In the quarter final she defeated Fonseca Vicky of Nicaragua by 3 shidos, lost the semi by only a shido against Yanet Bermoy of Cuba and won the bronze medal by Ippon against PALMA Jormary of Venezuela. Haiti won a total of three bronze medals in all sports including Desravine's. Judo will take place June 26-27, 2015. Judo athletes will first will check in and weigh in on Friday, June 26th with the Judo competition running all day on Saturday, June 27th. The World Police & Fire Games is basically the Olympics for full time and retired police, firefighters, paramedics, customs and correction officers from all around the world. There are 61 medal sports, 12,000 first responders from 70 countries, 30,000 visitors and 4,000 volunteers. You can visit the 2015 World Police & Fire Games website at http://www.Fairfax2015.com for specific information. You can register as a volunteer or athlete. When you register online to volunteer there is a background screening performed by the 2015 World Police & Fire Games at their expense. Each registered volunteer will get a nice looking golf shirt, complementary meals, and there is a shuttle bus service for those who need it. Judo is an IJF sanctioned event. Roy Englert, Jr. will be the Chief Referee. Maurice Allan, MBE is the Tournament Director. He is assisted by our Local Organizing Committee (LOC) that includes Sharon Landstreet, Sebastian John, and me.
