Hence it is appropriate to discuss the nature and feature of folk culture, folk form or folk literature to connect them to fiction. Folk culture belongs to the antiquity past but is still alive in the present. When we go through the Vedanta, Astadasapurana and Mahabharata we find elements of folk culture. The Mahabharata and Ramayana are the combination of a lot of folk tales. Folk forms like folk songs, tales, theatre, rituals are generally focused on a particular event of a particular place. It is confined to a limited area taking its cultures, traditions, customs and ways of life. Folk literature is generally a literature of an imaginary world which is far from reality.

    Language and Literature India is (one of the) world’s oldest civilization and so is the Indian literature. Initially it was essentially oral. Thus the earliest works were composed to be sung or recited and then transmitted from generations. Later on this work was started being written down. Many languages were developed and flourished in India and so does the literature associated with various literary forms. Let’s look at it one by one. Ancient Indian Literature - It covers almost every aspect of literary forms present in the world. It includes (in broadest sense) religious, mundane, poetry (didactic and dramatic), epic and lyric scientific prose and narrative as well as oral poetry and song. It will be incorrect to say that Indian Literature is based on only the religious classics of Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism .Jain narrative literature is full of erotic stories and realism which is written in Prakrit language. One of the oldest literary work i.e. Vedas are essentially archetypal poetry of high literary value they have multiple meanings. Vedic ritual is preserved in literary text called Brahmanas. It is mainly divided into two parts: ritualistic injunction and dissuasions. The great Indian epics, Ramayana (1500 BC) and Mahabharata (10UUBC) are the ethnic memories of Indian people. Both these epics are rich in motifs and have universal appeal. Sanskrit Literature - The Sanskrit language is basically bifurcated into the Vedic and the Classical. For anyone, it is almost impossible to say who composed folklore and oral tradition and when exactly they came into existence which are origin of all Indian poems for children, but no matter what the language , the Indians share a common culture and heritage, values and beliefs. As per the researchers, there are number of similar poems, songs, stories etc. in every Indian language. Here I must confess that being and Hindi author and in the absence of availability of enough children’s contemporary literature of all the Indian languages in Hindi or English through translation, I can cite few examples only. Further, even in one Indian language like Hindi or Bengali or Marathi etc. the literature is now available in such a large volume that it is again almost impossible to cover the whole in a short paper and time. Even then I shall try to justify to some extent. I may also mention that even in Sanskrit, children’s literature (though rarely) is being written. A story, ‘Mosquito and Wind’ written by Jagannath can be cited as an example.

These religions are also called as ‘Eastern Religions’. 1. Hinduism The word Hindu is derived from the Sanskrit name Sindhu for the Indus River. With around 1 billion followers, Hinduism is the third largest religion in the world after Christianity and Islam. Hinduism is considered as the oldest religion of the World originating around 5000 years ago. It is the predominant spiritual following of the Indian subcontinent, and one of its indigenous faiths. Hinduism is a conglomeration of distinct intellectual or philosophical points of view, rather than a rigid common set of beliefs. Hinduism was spread through parts of South-eastern Asia, China, Korea, and Japan. Hindus worship a god with different forms. Evolution The origin of Hinduism dates back to prehistoric times. Some of the important evidences of prehistoric times: • Mesolithic rock paintings depicting dances and rituals gives evidence attesting to prehistoric religion in the Indian "subcontinent". • Neolithic pastoralists inhabiting the Indus River Valley buried their dead in a manner suggestive of spiritual practices that incorporated notions of an afterlife and belief in magic. • Other Stone Age sites, such as the Bhimbetka rock shelters in central Madhya Pradesh and the Kupgal petroglyphs of eastern Karnataka, contain rock art portraying religious rites and evidence of possible ritualised music.
