Minister for Defence Dr Ng Eng Hen officiated at the National Service (NS) Hub Groundbreaking Ceremony this afternoon. As part of the event, Dr Ng participated in the symbolic sod turning and toured various NS Hub exhibits. 1 The NS Hub, which will house various NS-related services such as NS administration, medical screening, and fitness testing for the NS community, will be a one-stop service centre that brings greater ease and convenience, and better serves the needs of the NS community. Members of the public will also be able to access amenities and facilities such as F&B outlets and an outdoor community area equipped with fitness equipment, a running track and a football field. The building is scheduled to be completed in 2023. Speaking at the event, Dr Ng said that the NS Hub represented another milestone in Singapore's NS journey. He said, "It represents another milestone in our commitment to NS. And if you think about NS or our commitment to NS, it is a shared one. It is a shared commitment because it cannot exist otherwise. You have to have the Government and the citizens behind it. It does not work one without the other. Because each is a vital component to maintain that solidarity for a strong national defence, by ourselves, for ourselves and for Singapore together." Dr Ng also expressed hope that the NS Hub will become a national icon for future generations of national servicemen, and a physical symbol representing the nation's commitment to a strong defence. "The NS Hub we are building today will represent more than just a building where NSFs and NSmen will come back to enlist, take their IPPTs, undergo medical check-ups, or perform other administrative matters. I believe that the NS Hub is the physical embodiment of Singapore's unique NS commitment and culture," said Dr Ng. Dr Ng was accompanied by Senior Ministers of State for Defence Mr Heng Chee How and Dr Mohamad Maliki Bin Osman, Chief of Defence Force Lieutenant-General Melvyn Ong, Defence Science and Technology Agency (DSTA) Chief Executive Mr Tan Peng Yam as well as other senior officials from the Ministry of Defence and the Singapore Armed Forces. 2 Dr Ng speaking at the NS Hub Groundbreaking Ceremony.     Dr Mohamad MALIKI Bin Osman Minister Prime Minister’s Office Second Minister Ministry of Education & Ministry of Foreign Affairs REPUBLIC OF SINGAPORE Dr Mohamad Maliki Osman was elected a Member of Parliament (MP) for the Sembawang Group Representation Constituency (GRC) in 2001 and 2006. He was elected as one of the MPs for the East Coast GRC in May 2011, September 2015 and July 2020. Dr Maliki served as Parliamentary Secretary for the Ministry of Community Development Youth and Sports (MCYS) from August 2004 to June 2006 and the Ministry of Health (MOH) from August 2004 to October 2005. He moved on to become the Parliamentary Secretary for the Ministry of National Development (MND), and was promoted to Senior Parliamentary Secretary on 1 November 2010. Following the 2011 General Elections, Dr Maliki was re-appointed as the Senior Parliamentary Secretary for National Development and was concurrently appointed as the Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Defence. He was also appointed Mayor for the South East District. He was promoted to Minister of State for Defence and National Development on 1 September 2013. In the Ministry of National Development, Dr Maliki served as the Chairman of the Community Improvement Projects Committee (CIPC) and the Private Estates Upgrading Programme (EUP) as well as oversaw Singapore’s food security, including food safety and the development of our agriculture sector.     5 March 2008 MEDIA RELEASE INTER-MINISTRY COMMITTEE TO REVIEW HELP FOR DYSFUNCTIONAL FAMILIES WITH CHILDREN The Government has set up an Inter-Ministry Committee (IMC) to review the help for dysfunctional families with children. Every child is important, and children from dysfunctional homes are particularly vulnerable to falling behind in their development. Left without help, they may perpetuate an inter-generational cycle of dysfunctionality. The IMC will come up with recommendations to help these families so that they can overcome the challenges they face, and their children have a good chance to do well. Composition of the IMC 2 The IMC is chaired by the Minister of Community Development, Youth and Sports, Dr Vivian Balakrishnan. The members of the Committee are Senior Minister of State for Home Affairs, Associate Professor Ho Peng Kee; Minister of State for Community Development, Youth and Sports, Mrs Yu-Foo Yee Shoon; Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Education, Mr Masagos Zulkifli; Parliamentary Secretary for National Development, Dr Maliki Osman; as well as Parliamentary Secretary for Community Development, Youth and Sports, Mr Teo Ser Luck. 3 The IMC is supported by several government agencies, social work agencies, Self-Help Groups and other people sector representatives who work with dysfunctional families.
