In keeping with our love of the Great Western Railway we are proud to present four of these classes of 2-6-2 tank engine. Built from 1903 to 1939, over 260 members of the classes referred to as Large Prairies worked the lines of the Great Western Railway as mixed traffic and suburban passenger services. So useful and reliable were they that over 250 of them worked in British Railways service, many of them until the last days of steam in Britain. With the GWR Large Prairies we have continued our pursuit of realism in our locomotives and these tank engines include a brand new brake simulation as well as second valve simulation and communication with the included guards vans making driving in Advanced Mode even more challenging, rewarding and immersive. If you prefer, the engines are equally as happy running in simple mode and standard mode using the F4 HUD, keyboard, mouse and/or Xbox controller. Please read this manual thoroughly, especially to get the best from Advanced Mode. We hope you enjoy driving this Great Western classic. Renumbered to 3100, 39 more engines were built on this initial design numbered 3111-49 with them all being renumbered to 5100/5111-49 in 1912. From this class the 5101 series was derived by Charles Collett (Churchward’s replacement) with the newer style of curved frames and 140 of these were built, numbered 5101-5110, 5150-5199 and 4100-4179. The 2-6-2t arrangement was so successful on the line of the GWR that further modifications lead to the creation of the 3150, 6100 and 8100 classes which had a larger boiler, a boiler pressure of 225psi (instead of 200psi) and smaller driving wheels respectively. The large prairies operated on the entire GWR network and were primarily used on suburban passenger services and mixed freight operations. 260 members of the 5100/5101/6100/8100 classes were built and an incredible 249 of them survived to enter British Railways service in 1948 where they continued their hard work under the Western region, many of them still operating in the last days of steam in Britain. When the Beeching axe swung in 1968 and steam engines were banned from Britain’s railways many of the large prairies were scrapped which provided the opportunity for the preservation movement to purchase them. A single 6100 class and 10 members of the 5101 class survived and despite being a popular donor vehicle for other restorations 8 large prairies survive today with 3 of them operational at this time with 3 more waiting or undergoing overhauls or restoration. Simple Mode This is selected using the menu in Train Simulator and provides a simple stop/go, forwards/backwards set of controls via the simulators built in HUD. Standard Mode This is the default mode if you choose to drive in Expert mode using the Train Simulator menu. The locomotive will operate with more complex controls and can be driven using the F4 HUD or an Xbox controller. Advanced Mode This is an advanced mode for those who want a more realistic experience and introduces features such as condensed water in the cylinders, overfilling the boiler, realistic wheel slip and a simulated steam chest. To achieve these extra functions use of a keyboard is required, although this can be used in conjunction with mouse operation or the F4 HUD. To turn on Advanced Mode you can press Control A at any time and this will also turn it off again. The Advanced Mode controls and features are shown below. Regulator This controls the amount of steam allowed into the cylinders, hence directly controlling the speed in conjunction with the reverser. Keys: A,D Advanced Mode In advanced mode the locomotive steam chest is simulated. This will add a delay and smoothing to the increase and decrease of the regulators power to simulate
