Over several generations in training artists, the Company has developed many unique acrobatic acts like Global Motorcycling, Kicking Bowls to Heads on High Unicycles, Russian Bars In Chinese Traditional Style, Chinese Poles In Shaolin Style, Diving Through Moving Hoops, Aerial Bungee Tumblings, Aerial Tissue Flowers and more. For decades, Chinese and foreign audiences have enjoyed and praised the artistry of these performances. Since its inception in 1951, there have been more than two hundred artists of the Company who have won the gold and silver awards at international and national acrobatic competitions and circus festivals. In 1972, the Company visited the United States with 72 artists who were invited as guests to the White House by President Richard Nixon while on tour. As ambassadors for the performing arts, the Company played a key role in the re-establishment of diplomatic relations between China and the United States, whose governments at that time had no formal diplomatic ties. More than forty years later, the Company has toured five hundred cities in seventy countries. In 2012, five troupes and teams from the Company traveled to Germany, Turkey, Taiwan and Singapore. Since 1999, the Company has also created several impressive productions, such as “Mirage,” “Mirage of Dragons,” “Confuscise,” “Pirates!” and “Sun Birds.” These productions have been per- formed almost four thousand times across Germany, Brazil, Mexico, Israel, Argentina and Chile. He has appeared as soloist with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Philadelphia Orchestra, and the symphony orchestras of Boston, Chicago, San Francisco, and London, and regularly gives recitals in New York, Washington, Boston, Philadelphia, and throughout the United States. In 2014-15, he launches a four-season tenure as an Artistic Partner of the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra; makes debuts with the Cleveland Orchestra under Susanna Mälkki and the New York Philharmonic led by Esa-Pekka Salonen; appears as a soloist with the Los Angeles Philhar- monic and San Francisco Symphony; and performs Bach concertos on tour with Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields. Future engagements also include a return to the Wigmore Hall, and his recital debut at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam playing the Goldberg Variations. As Music Director of the 2014 Ojai Music Festival, he wrote the libretto to a comic opera, The Classical Style: An Opera (of Sorts), by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Steven Stucky. Ravi Coltrane Quartet In Flux Savoy Jazz SVY 17444 (2005) Last year the editors of Jazz Times yielded to temptation and ran the eye-catching headline “COLTRANE RETURNS!” to cover the new release by keyboardist Alice Coltrane. Several thousand readers groaned. So it usually goes with the heirs and scions of the jazz world: A marketing dream becomes a musical disappointment. As befits a quintessentially democratic art, jazz “dynasties” are few and of relatively modest distinction (no offense meant to, for example, Mtume James Heath, Ellis Marsalis or Von Freeman). The birth-children of Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis and Charlie Parker steered away from musical pursuits. A decade ago if asked to point to a jazz family with a truly influential parent and child we might have started and ended with Dewey and Joshua Redman (and even that may be a stretch). John Coltrane’s living example was not what influenced his son to take up jazz: John died when Ravi was wearing diapers. Nor was the son’ s embrace of the father’s chosen tools, the tenor and soprano saxophone, pre-ordained; the younger Coltrane did not succumb to the horns’ siren songs until he was in his late teens. Ravi Coltrane consciously chose, as a young adult, to walk the path which his father blazed for so many. While he certainly benefitted as a young artist from the goodwill which his family brought with such early employers as Jack DeJohnette, Pharoah Sanders and particularly Elvin Jones, Mr. Coltrane made the most of the opportunities presented to him.

Saturday, February 11 @ 7 PM and 9:30 PM Prince Theatre Part of the African Roots, American Voices series. 16/17 SEASON 5 PROGRAM NOTES Miguel Zenón’s new album, Típico, is above all a celebration of his longstanding quartet. His previous releases have augmented the core unit with additional instrumentalists as Zenón looked outward to explore various aspects of his Puerto Rican heritage. This new album feels more intimate. Its focus stays closer to home, with nods to Zenón’s own personal and professional life as it zeroes in on what makes his band unique. Zenón’s quartet has been developing a common language for more than a decade. Pianist Luis Perdomo and bassist Hans Glawischnig have been with Zenón since the turn of the millennium; drummer Henry Cole joined the band in 2005. Their language is thoroughly fluent in modern jazz, with instrumental prowess. The dialect of rhythmic and harmonic complexity they’ve created together through the years is distinctive. Named after the master sitarist Ravi Shankar, Coltrane is a Grammy nominated saxophonist who has released six albums to date. Matthew Garrison, son of the late Jimmy Garrison who was John Coltrane’s bassist, became a talented bass guitarist in part thanks to his godfather Jack DeJohnette. Garrison has collaborated with several jazz musicians including CAP Alums John Scofield and Pat Metheny. In 1998 Garrison founded GarrisonJazz Productions where he produces, promotes, and markets his music as well as providing music education.

Tom Taggart, former United States Senator, threatened to sue the author for using his name ~n connection with a gambling casino in the book. The suit was dropped when the name was 126 changed. The book remained a success despite adverse publicity. Edna Ferber doubted whether her story, which spanned fifty years and dealt with miscegenation and desertion, could be adapted into a play. How- ever, she signed a contract in November of 1926, giving Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein the musical and dramatic rights to Show Boat. Miss Ferber received a royalty advance of $500 and 1~ percent of the gross weekly box office receipts from the play's producer, Florenz Ziegfeld. 127 The play was not a typical " Ziegfeld Follies" girlie show with scantily clad dancers and an even barer script. "'Show Boat' was a tightly written musical play with devotion to character development, with songs that grew meaningfully out of the plot, with spectacle and dance only when spectacle 128 and dance seemed appropriate to the story." It was th~ first musical to move away from the traditional vaudeville style productions . "Show Boat" previewed on November 15, 1927, at the National Theatre in Washington, D.C. The audience remained for the entir~ four hour show. The next morning there was a line of people wound around the block waiting to . k 129 pureh ase t~c ets.
