The Presentation of Christ in the Temple

3 February, 2019

Welcome

On behalf of everyone at St. John’s, Toorak, a very warm welcome to this church and faith community. St. John’s welcomes everyone to all services and events, regardless of age, gender, sexual orientation, race or background.

This is a wonderful and historic church, founded in 1859, and is a vibrant part of the Toorak and community. This parish church is part of the Anglican Church of Australia and a member of the global Anglican Communion, comprised of 80 million people.

Regular services of worship are held each Sunday at 8am and 10am, Wednesday at 7pm, and Thursday at 12.15pm. All welcome. Services are followed by times of fellowship over food and drinks to which everyone is also welcome.

This church actively follows Jesus’ command to love God, love one’s neighbour and to care for all people. Our clergy and parishioners regularly visit the sick, home-bound, and the dying. We care for the poor and needy through service and charitable giving, through our Opportunity Shop run in partnership with the local Catholic and Uniting churches, and by supporting the work of Anglicare, The Brotherhood of St. Laurence and The Anglican Board of Mission. Our clergy regularly baptise new members of the church, preside at weddings and care for the grieving through our funeral ministry. If we can be of service to you or your family, please do not hesitate to get in touch. If you would like to give of your time and talents in the service of others, please also contact the church and we will gladly welcome your contribution.

If you’re visiting for the first time do please introduce yourself to a welcomer or member of the clergy, and fill out the blue ‘Welcome’ card found at the end of every pew so we can stay in touch with you.

2 The 8am service begins with the Introductory Rite below. The 10am service begins with the processional hymn 98 The Musical Setting for the Eucharist may be found in the red hymn book at number 756

INTRODUCTORY RITE please stand

Blessed be God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Blessed be God’s kingdom, now and for ever.

The Lord be with you. And also with you.

Hymn 98 ‘We praise, we worship you, O God’ At 8am, first & last verses only

The Collect for Purity said together Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Confession Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, confident in God’s forgiveness. Merciful God, our maker and our judge, we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, and in what we have failed to do: we have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves; we repent, and are sorry for all our sins. Father, forgive us. Strengthen us to love and obey you in newness of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Absolution pronounced by the celebrant

Gloria in Excelsis at 8am said together, at 10am sung with choir Glory to God in the highest, and peace to God’s people on earth. Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory. Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us; you are seated at the right hand of the Father:

3 receive our prayer. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

The Collect for The Presentation of Christ in the Temple The celebrant prays the collect, after which all are seated

The Children’s Address At 10am, all children are invited to join together at the chancel step

THE LITURGY OF THE WORD

The Old Testament Lesson Malachi 3.1-4 Read at 8am by Kelly Shang, and 10am by Jane Munro 1 S ee, I am sending my messenger to prepare the way before me, and the Lord whom you seek will suddenly come to his temple. The messenger of the covenant in whom you delight—indeed, he is coming, says the Lord 2 of hosts. B ut who can endure the day of his coming, and who can stand 3 when he appears? For he is like a refiner’s fire and like fullers’ soap; h e will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver, and he will purify the descendants of Levi and refine them like gold and silver, until they 4 present offerings to the Lord in righteousness. T hen the offering of Judah and Jerusalem will be pleasing to the Lord as in the days of old and as in former years. Hear the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Psalter Psalm 24 said together 1 The earth is the Lord’s and all that is in it: the compass of the world and those who dwell therein. 2 For he has founded it upon the seas: and established it upon the waters. 3 Who shall ascend the hill of the Lord: or who shall stand in his holy place? 4 Those who have clean hands and a pure heart: who have not set their soul upon idols, nor sworn their oath to a lie. 5 They shall receive blessing from the Lord: and recompense from the God of their salvation. 6 Of such a kind as this are those who seek him: those who seek your face, O God of Jacob. 4 7 Lift up your heads, O you gates, and be lifted up, you everlasting doors: and the King of glory shall come in. 8 Who is the King of glory?: the Lord, strong and mighty, the Lord mighty in battle. 9 Lift up your heads, O you gates, and be lifted up, you everlasting doors: and the King of glory shall come in. 10 Who is the King of glory?: the Lord of hosts, he is the King of glory. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

The New Testament Lesson Hebrews 2.14-18 Read at 8am by Brenda Mouritz, and 10am by Kelly Shang 14 S ince, therefore, the children share flesh and blood, he himself likewise shared the same things, so that through death he might destroy the one 15 who has the power of death, that is, the devil, a nd free those who all 16 their lives were held in slavery by the fear of death. F or it is clear that he 17 did not come to help angels, but the descendants of Abraham. T herefore he had to become like his brothers and sisters in every respect, so that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make 18 a sacrifice of atonement for the sins of the people. B ecause he himself was tested by what he suffered, he is able to help those who are being tested. Hear the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

At 10am please stand for the Gradual Hymn

Gradual Hymn 619 ’Have faith in God, my heart’

At both services we stand and turn to face the gospel as it is read

The Gospel Luke 2.22-40 The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, Chapter 2, commencing at verse twenty two. Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ. 22 W hen the time came for their purification according to the law of Moses, they brought him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord 23 ( as it is written in the law of the Lord, ‘Every firstborn male shall be 24 designated as holy to the Lord’), a nd they offered a sacrifice according to 5 what is stated in the law of the Lord, ‘a pair of turtle-doves or two young 25 pigeons.’ N ow there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon; this man was righteous and devout, looking forward to the consolation of 26 Israel, and the Holy Spirit rested on him. I t had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord’s 27 Messiah. G uided by the Spirit, Simeon came into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him what was customary 28 under the law, S imeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying, 29 ‘ Master, now you are dismissing your servant in peace, according to 30 31 your word; f or my eyes have seen your salvation, w hich you have 32 prepared in the presence of all peoples, a light for revelation to the 33 Gentiles and for glory to your people Israel.’ A nd the child’s father and 34 mother were amazed at what was being said about him. T hen Simeon blessed them and said to his mother Mary, ‘This child is destined for the falling and the rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be 35 opposed s o that the inner thoughts of many will be revealed—and a 36 sword will pierce your own soul too.’ T here was also a prophet, Anna the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was of a great age, having lived with her husband for seven years after her marriage, 37 t hen as a widow to the age of eighty-four. She never left the temple but 38 worshipped there with fasting and prayer night and day. A t that moment she came, and began to praise God and to speak about the child 39 to all who were looking for the redemption of Jerusalem. W hen they had finished everything required by the law of the Lord, they returned to 40 Galilee, to their own town of Nazareth. T he child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom; and the favour of God was upon him. This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

The Sermon The

Anthem When to the temple Mary went Johann Eccard (1553–1611)

When to the temple Mary went, and brought the Holy Child, Him did the aged Simeon see, as it had been revealed. He took up Jesus in his arms and blessing God he said: In peace I now depart, my Saviour having seen, The Hope of Israel, the Light of men. Help now thy servants, gracious Lord, that we may ever be as once the faithful Simeon was, rejoicing but in Thee; and when we must from earth departure take, departure take,

6 may gently fall asleep, may gently fall asleep, may gently fall asleep and with Thee wake.

Translation from German by John Troutbeck

Nicene Creed said together, standing We believe in one God, the Father, the almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

The Prayers of the People kneeling. At 8am by Ted Mouritz and at 10am by Kelly Shang.

The Prayers end with the following Almighty God, you have promised to hear our prayers. Grant that what we have asked in faith we may by your grace receive, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Greeting of Peace standing

We are the body of Christ. His Spirit is with us.

The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you.

7 All share with each other the sign of peace, customarily shaking hands with those around them, and saying, ‘Peace be with you’

Music Notes

After some beautiful solo music during January, the parish choir returns to assist in the leading of the Liturgy. The Feast of the Presentation (aka Candlemas) is transferred from February 2 and the Antiphon Lumen ad revelationem gentium, is one of three antiphons traditionally sung during the Procession for that Feast. Taken from the Nunc Dimittis of William Byrd’s stunning Gradualia this text translates: A light to enlighten the Gentiles: and to be the glory of your people, Israel” [Luke 2: 29-32] A report on the progress of work on the Hill & Son organ will be provided next week.
