St. John’s welcomes everyone to all services and events, regardless of age, gender, sexual orientation, race or background. This is a wonderful and historic church, founded in 1859, and is a vibrant part of the Toorak and Melbourne community. This parish church is part of the Anglican Church of Australia and a member of the global Anglican Communion, comprised of 80 million people. Regular services of worship are held each Sunday at 8am and 10am, Wednesday at 7pm, and Thursday at 12.15pm. All welcome. Services are followed by times of fellowship over food and drinks to which everyone is also welcome. This church actively follows Jesus’ command to love God, love one’s neighbour and to care for all people. Our clergy and parishioners regularly visit the sick, home-bound, and the dying. We care for the poor and needy through service and charitable giving, through our Opportunity Shop run in partnership with the local Catholic and Uniting churches, and by supporting the work of Anglicare, The Brotherhood of St. Laurence and The Anglican Board of Mission. Our clergy regularly baptise new members of the church, preside at weddings and care for the grieving through our funeral ministry. If we can be of service to you or your family, please do not hesitate to get in touch. If you would like to give of your time and talents in the service of others, please also contact the church and we will gladly welcome your contribution. If you’re visiting for the first time do please introduce yourself to a welcomer or member of the clergy, and fill out the blue ‘Welcome’ card found at the end of every pew so we can stay in touch with you. @stjohnstoorak Cover Image Giotto di Bondone Presentation of Christ in the Temple 1315-20 Fresco North transept, Lower Church, San Francesco, Assisi 2 The 8am service begins with the Introductory Rite below. The messenger of the covenant in whom you delight—indeed, he is coming, says the Lord 2 of hosts. B ut who can endure the day of his coming, and who can stand 3 when he appears? For he is like a refiner’s fire and like fullers’ soap; h e will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver, and he will purify the descendants of Levi and refine them like gold and silver, until they 4 present offerings to the Lord in righteousness. T hen the offering of Judah and Jerusalem will be pleasing to the Lord as in the days of old and as in former years. Hear the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Psalter Psalm 24 said together 1 The earth is the Lord’s and all that is in it: the compass of the world and those who dwell therein. 2 For he has founded it upon the seas: and established it upon the waters. 3 Who shall ascend the hill of the Lord: or who shall stand in his holy place? 4 Those who have clean hands and a pure heart: who have not set their soul upon idols, nor sworn their oath to a lie. 5 They shall receive blessing from the Lord: and recompense from the God of their salvation. 6 Of such a kind as this are those who seek him: those who seek your face, O God of Jacob. 4 7 Lift up your heads, O you gates, and be lifted up, you everlasting doors: and the King of glory shall come in. 8 Who is the King of glory?: the Lord, strong and mighty, the Lord mighty in battle. 9 Lift up your heads, O you gates, and be lifted up, you everlasting doors: and the King of glory shall come in. 10 Who is the King of glory?: the Lord of hosts, he is the King of glory. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. The New Testament Lesson Hebrews 2.14-18 Read at 8am by Brenda Mouritz, and 10am by Kelly Shang 14 S ince, therefore, the children share flesh and blood, he himself likewise shared the same things, so that through death he might destroy the one 15 who has the power of death, that is, the devil, a nd free those who all 16 their lives were held in slavery by the fear of death. F or it is clear that he 17 did not come to help angels, but the descendants of Abraham. T herefore he had to become like his brothers and sisters in every respect, so that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make 18 a sacrifice of atonement for the sins of the people. B ecause he himself was tested by what he suffered, he is able to help those who are being tested. Hear the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. At 10am please stand for the Gradual Hymn Gradual Hymn 619 ’Have faith in God, my heart’ At both services we stand and turn to face the gospel as it is read The Gospel Luke 2.22-40 The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, Chapter 2, commencing at verse twenty two. Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ. 22 W hen the time came for their purification according to the law of Moses, they brought him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord 23 ( as it is written in the law of the Lord, ‘Every firstborn male shall be 24 designated as holy to the Lord’), a nd they offered a sacrifice according to 5 what is stated in the law of the Lord, ‘a pair of turtle-doves or two young 25 pigeons.’ N ow there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon; this man was righteous and devout, looking forward to the consolation of 26 Israel, and the Holy Spirit rested on him. I t had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord’s 27 Messiah. G uided by the Spirit, Simeon came into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him what was customary 28 under the law, S imeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying, 29 ‘ Master, now you are dismissing your servant in peace, according to 30 31 your word; f or my eyes have seen your salvation, w hich you have 32 prepared in the presence of all peoples, a light for revelation to the 33 Gentiles and for glory to your people Israel.’ A nd the child’s father and 34 mother were amazed at what was being said about him. T hen Simeon blessed them and said to his mother Mary, ‘This child is destined for the falling and the rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be 35 opposed s o that the inner thoughts of many will be revealed—and a 36 sword will pierce your own soul too.’ T here was also a prophet, Anna the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher.
