His See enbraced the colonies of South Australia and Western Australia. He was enthroned as the first Bishop of Adelaide on 30 December 1847 at Trinity Church, Adelaide. In territorial terms it was a time of loss. The diocese of Ripon was founded in 1836 taking with it some of the most heavily populated new industrial regions of West Yorkshire, Bradford, Halifax and Leeds. By 1836 the archbishop had also lost his peculiar jurisdiction over Hexhamshire and in 1837 the archdeaconry of Nottingham was transferred to the diocese of Lincoln. Even though a time of territorial loss for the diocese, it was a period of increased church building. When changing expectations of the parochial role of the clergy, the demand for clerical residence and the provision of a living wage for stipendary curates and increased parochial demands for preaching and the sacraments within a broadening definition of parochial work are added to this the period is seen to be one of repeated adaptation and change. ORDINATION- THE SOURCES From the middle of the eighteenth century onwards the information recorded in the York Institution Act Books can be validated and expanded by reference to the bundles of papers submitted by the candidates themselves prior to their taking orders.

    AEJT 16 (August 2010) Cadwallader / MacKillop THE LOCAL AND THE UNIVERSAL Anglican appreciations of the Saints and Mary MacKillop1 Alan Cadwallader Abstract: This paper provides a critical explanation of the shifting means by which the Anglican Communion has recognized saints. It is seen that there is a proximity between the practice of the Anglican Communion and that of the Orthodox Church, with particular accent on the esteem in which local practice is held and the overarching power of the liturgical calendar to bring recognition. In the light of this practice, an assessment is given of how the sainthood of Mary McKillop might be appreciated within the Anglican Church, especially in Australia. A. ANGLICAN APPRECIATIONS OF THE SAINTS arly in the twentieth century, one Archbishop of Canterbury, Cosmo EGordon Lang, wrote that "'Beatification' … is not a word in the vocabulary of the Anglican Church." "Canonisation" has received a similar de-listing. The reformed side of the Anglican Church is suspicious of any compromise of honour to be accorded the Saviour, the Son of God. It is also suspicious of aggrandisement of some over others in the communion of saints. Concern surrounds the suspected purpose(s) behind the recognition of some persons as "Saints". In times long past these scruples motivated the Anglican Church to contrast itself from certain practices of the Church of Rome.     CHAPTER 12 ‘We wanted the first one to be a winner’: Trinity Hills 2001–2004 n Sunday morning 29 February 2004, the Christian congrega- tion calling itself ‘Holy Trinity Adelaide: Hills’, or more briefly, ‘HTA: Hills’ gathered to celebrate the third anniversary of its inauguration. The venue was the Aldgate Community Hall, a Omodest country town facility at the time geared to the screening of films. About 250 people, including probably sixty children, attended, sitting for the most part on the comfortable, if battered, cinema seats, or perched on the extra plastic chairs deployed for this occasion. The service, detailed on the pew sheet, was a brisk ensemble of hymns, prayers, announcements, features and a sermon. The Revd Chris Edwards, founding Anglican clergyman of the congregation, gave a pointed and vigorous address that left his audience in no doubt of his expectations of them. A few days later, at a briefing meeting of the members of the parish of Holy Trinity, North Terrace, Adelaide, it was pointed out that this new congregation, which the parish fostered, funded, developed and supervised, had lifted its pledged contribution to the budget for the support of this new ven- ture from the 2003 figure of $109,000 to $160,000 for 2004. In addition, the newly-appointed full-time pastoral worker for the Hills congregation, Clayton Fopp, was introduced to the meeting.1 In a highly urbanised diocese that has been experiencing contrac- tion for many years2 here was a remarkable counter-punch. This was a new congregation with a secure attendance roughly double that of the diocesan average, and an income likewise well above typical figures for the rest of the diocese.

This church actively follows Jesus’ command to love God, love one’s neighbour and to care for all people. Our clergy and parishioners regularly visit the sick, home-bound, and the dying. We care for the poor and needy through service and charitable giving, through our Opportunity Shop run in partnership with the local Catholic and Uniting churches, and by supporting the work of Anglicare, The Brotherhood of St. Laurence and The Anglican Board of Mission. Our clergy regularly baptise new members of the church, preside at weddings and care for the grieving through our funeral ministry. Technically the Centenary of the Faculty of Law occurred in 1957, 100 years after the Faculty was formally established by the new University. In that sense, Sydney joins Melbourne as the two oldest law faculties in Australia. But, even less than the law itself, a law school is not just words on paper; it is people relating to each other, students and their teachers. Effectively the Faculty began its teaching existence in 1890. In that year the first full time Professor, Pitt Cobbett was appointed. Thus, and appropriately, the Law School celebrated its centenary in 1990, 33 years after the Faculty might have done. In addition to a formal structure, a law school needs a substantial one, stone, bricks and mortar in better architectural days, but if pressed to it, pre-stressed concrete. In its first century, as these chapters recount, the School was rather peripatetic — as if on circuit around Phillip Street.
