FROM THE PRESIDENT’S DESK Inside this issue: Welcome back to Austin ASHRAE! It is my pleasure to serve as your local chapter president this year! Before we get started, I wish Programs 2 to thank David Driggers for his leadership and guidance in the past year. As was his stated goal last September, he has left our chapter in PrePay Option 5 a BETTER position than when he took office, and I plan to continue that trend with your help and involvement. Baseball Event 6

Steve Hansen For those that don't know me, I have been in the industry for 20 Treasurer’s Report 7 Chapter President years: first in Houston at a consulting engineering firm, then Dallas as a design-build mechanical subcontractor, and the last 7+ years in Austin at a large general contractor. My goals for the upcoming year BOG Meeting Minutes 8 in ASHRAE are to 1)increase member attendance at chapter meetings by at least 15% through consistent communication and excellent, principal-level programs that dig deep into Officer Roster 12 relevant topics and 2)increase research promotion by aligning the RP events with the member's interests. Unpaid Society Dues 13

I would like to personally thank the excellent team of volunteers who are working hard for History 15 the members this year. I feel like I'm managing an all-star team. We still have one spot to fill: Student Activities chair. Gayle Davis has done an excellent job the last few years, and has stepped up to be our Chapter Vice President this year. We are looking for somebody with a CSE 40 under 40 18 passion for helping the next generation become involved with our wonderful, close-knit industry.

Our first meeting out of the shoot covers a topic all of us here in the South could know a little more about: boilers! The tech session will cover Mechanical Draft Controls, and the main program will cover Condensing Boiler Technologies. The meeting will be held at Dave & Buster's. UPCOMING EVENTS

Lastly, our region is making a special emphasis to increase membership among students, young August Meeng engineers, and women in our industry. I challenge the existing membership to reach out to Aug 17 | Dinner colleagues and invite them to a chapter meeting or one of our other events. Dave & Busters 5PM Let’s have a great year! AUGUST MEETING: CONNECTIONS

his month Iason Geagan will provide our tech session on mechanical draft controls and Ira Leary joins us for our main program to speak on the topic of hydronic heating boilers. T

Gayle Davis Tech Topic Overview: For years, venting has always been the overlooked piece of the puzzle. In VP—Programs the past, inefficient appliances provided so much natural draft, the venting systems weren't criti‐ cal. However, as technology changes, venting requirements become more important and should be one of the first factors in selecting products. We will look at the technical sizing and selecting the proper vent materials as well as look at mechanical draft options available in the market today.

Speaker bio:

Jason Geagan is the National Sales Manager for US Draft Co based in Fort Worth, TX. He has over 23 years of experience in the HVAC industry, primar‐ ily focusing on hydronic & steam boilers, specializing in venting solutions. AUGUST MEETING: CONNECTIONS

Main Topic Overview: In the world of modern hydronic heating, the words “Condensing” and “High Efficiency” are buzz words used daily to reference hydronic heating boilers. Virtually every boiler manufacturer has one or more options for condensing boilers. With so many options availa‐ ble, it can be difficult to make accurate product comparisons and choices. During this presenta‐ tion, we will discuss the different types of commercial condensing boilers available in today’s mar‐ Gayle Davis ketplace, how a condensing boiler works, high burner turndown, and typical piping arrangements VP—Programs that are utilized with condensing boiler technologies.

Speaker bio:

Ira Leary is an industry veteran who has specialized in boiler and water heater systems for over two decades. Ira started his carrier in Nashville, TN working for Lochinvar Corporation. During this time, Ira would hold the position of District Sales Manager covering the Virginia territory selling the manufacturers full product line; as well as a Regional Sales Manager in Lochinvar’s Pool Heater division which brought him to Hou‐ ston, TX. Ira then joined Texas Steam and Instrumentation where he teamed up with another industry veteran to the companies Com‐ mercial Division representing Lochinvar and Armstrong International product lines. Ira currently holds the position of Sales Manager at GOES Heating Systems one of largest boiler/water heater rep firms in Ira Leary South East Texas. Vanessa Freidberg David Driggers David Bacorn Stuart Bloomquist Larry Bloomquist Andy Collier President‐Elect/Newsletter Research Promotions Auditing/Nominating Membership Promotions BOG BOG Dear CHAPTER Members:

Reference: Unpaid Society Dues

As you know, we strive to reduce our Chapter’s delinquency counts throughout the year by reminding members to pay their dues once their paid Society year is complete. In our efforts to notify our members, we want to make sure there is no confusion about an individual member’s status regarding being past due. The following is an attempt to help clarify the information regarding membership and delinquencies.

When someone joins ASHRAE, and Society has received their dues payment, their annual membership year begins and continues on a 12-month billing cycle. Communication with the member regarding dues will follow these general steps.

1. At three months prior to the one-year anniversary of the original billing, or the renewal date, the member is contacted to renew his/her dues for the following year. This Annual notice is typically an email with an outlook reminder to add to their calendar, and a paper invoice mailed to the member. 2. If the member does not renew, at 2 months before the renewal date, the member will be sent the first notice which is an email and postcard reminder to renew. 3. At the time of the renewal date, a second notice paper invoice is sent to the member. 4. If the member does not renew, they become “unpaid” the first day after the expiration date. They have become delinquent and the delinquency/grace period begins. 5. For the first three months (0-90 days past due) after the anniversary date, the member is delinquent but will continue to receive renewal notices, even though their membership remains active. For example: a. One week after the expiration date, a phone call is made to the member. b. Two months past the expiration date, a third notice with an email and postcard reminder is sent to the member. 6. After the three months following the expiration date (91-180 days past due), the member is technically expired and is now in a “grace” period. Members are no longer in good standing and cannot receive member benefits. Additional renewal notices will be sent to the member: a. Four months after the expiration date, a final notice email and postcard reminder will be sent to the member. b. Five months past the expiration date, a personal email from the Membership Manager will be sent with a notice that the member’s grace period is ending and he/she will be cancelled on the 1st of the next month. 7. Six months after the expiration date (181 days past due), the member is “cancelled.” They are sent another email and postcard, and they are dropped from the membership roster at this time.

Note that during this entire time frame, the member may also receive several telephone calls, emails, and/or letters from the Chapter MP Chairman urging them to renew their membership. Cancelled members can reinstate their membership with back dues to maintain their original election date (important for length of service requirements), or they can rejoin as a new member and start over. Reinstatements must be processed manually by ASHRAE staff. Rejoins can be done anytime on the website by re-applying as a “new” member.

To most members’ surprise, paying their dues three to six months late simply removes them from the “current” delinquency list for remaining months on the billing cycle. Since a “new membership” year is about to begin again, payment of your dues will be required upon your anniversary date. Once missed, the member is once again on a delinquency list. We understand that making dues payments are sometimes not a priority. If you miss paying your dues one time, however, you might find yourself in catch-up mode until you make two payments close together at some point during the billing cycle.

Please also remember that Society membership is a prerequisite to local membership. Local membership in the Chapter helps support our local programs, meetings and events. You can pay your local dues at the same time you pay your Society dues, most easily on-line. This will allow us to keep you informed of all local activities.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at 512-444-1835 during the day, or via email at [email protected]. If you find that you have not paid your dues, you can go to the ASHRAE website and pay your dues online at www.ashrae.org. Should you have any questions regarding this effort, do not hesitate to contact ASHRAE headquarters at 1-800-5ASHRAE.

Remember that PAID members have the greatest impact on both Society’s and the local Chapter’s financial bottom line.

Respectfully Submitted, Stuart Bloomquist Membership Promotion Chair

Project Manager, Stanley Consultants, Austin, Texas

BS Mechanical Engineering, South Dakota State University, Brookings

Davis joined Stanley Consultants’ Minneapolis office in 2008 as a college graduate and quickly made a name for himself as a go- getter, prompting the office manager to begin offering services in ground- source heat pumps and then commissioning. After 4 years of apprenticeship, he relocated to the company’s Austin office, passed the exam to become a licensed professional engineer, and was promoted to project manager in 2013. Davis has been a project manager for 4 years. When the company recently transitioned to a new vision resources planning system, he quickly became known as the subject matter expert in his office. He welcomed the new technology because it helps him better track budget and resource information to keep projects on task and within budget, reducing gross margin erosion. Davis is one of just three CxAs within Stanley Consultants and the only Certified GeoExchange Designer. Always one to be working toward the next goal and adding to his skill set, his next objective is to receive Project Management Professional certification. As the ASHRAE Austin Chapter student activities chair, for 2 years Davis has recruited volunteers and organized K-12 and collegiate classroom visits, museum tours, science fairs, hands-on activities, and mentorships. Minor home improvement projects, reading sci-fi novels, and spending time with family top Davis’ list of favorite activities. He is a young father who delights in the antics of his boys. They play hide-and-seek and tug of war as well as enjoy roughhousing, having backyard camping adventures, and fishing at the community regional park.

Why did you decide to apply for an ASHRAE certification? The firm I currently work for wanted to get more involved with Energy Benchmarking projects required by the City of Chicago. One of the Ordinance's requirements was to demonstrate having certain qualifications/credentials in order to be able to participate. That was when I decided to become BEAP- certified.

At this stage in your career, why is it important to get ASHRAE certified? As in any stage of my career, I believe it is important to illustrate the knowledge I am gaining through my exposure in various projects and tasks. Getting certified is the best way to demonstrate your experience is acknowledged as well as differentiate yourself from the rest of the working professionals.

How important is ASHRAE certification to your employer and clients? There are certain clients that require a particular skillset for their projects as well as employers that want to make sure the project's quality is assured. Therefore, ASHRAE certifications provide good experience metrics that are valuable to both the employers and the clients.

Harris Farooq

Why did you decide to apply for an ASHRAE certification? ASHRAE is the most recognized standard when it comes to mechanical engineering and once I heard about the certification programs ASHRAE offers, I was extremely interested in pursuing the healthcare facility design (HFDP) certification. Being a member of ASHRAE and part of YEA, I could see nothing better than having "ASHRAE Certified" attached to my name.

At this stage in your career, why is it important to get ASHRAE certified? I think for young engineers trying to prove their mettle in one of most competitive industries, i.e building design and construction, it’s important to create delineating factors which help us stand out from the competition. At this stage in my career, having previously designed major regional hospitals, I sought to further cement my place via this certification. Certifications, nowadays, complement formal further education, like a Master's degree, which can be more theoretical in nature. Trade-specific, expertise-based certifications carry a lot of weight and are generally well received in the market. That is why I opted for an ASHRAE Certification.

How important is ASHRAE certification to your employer and clients? ASHRAE certification is gaining popularity in the UAE market with more and more people opting to get certified. The certification carries a benchmark of quality that is associated with ASHRAE and gives the client confidence that the design engineer is fully adept with the codes and standards of practice. We have also been using the certification actively in our company marketing and as part of our profile which creates a distinct advantage for us and is proving to be one of the tools that helps us win over competition.

Saad Rashid

Why did you decide to apply for an ASHRAE certification? I am a Commissioning and Sustainability Consultant and ASHRAE forms a large foundation on many of the fundamentals of these fields. It was important for me to become intimately acquainted with the ASHRAE standards and I felt that the ASHRAE Commissioning Process Management Professional (CPMP) certification would be a good test of my knowledge.

At this stage in your career, why is it important to get ASHRAE certified? I am a strong advocate of continuous self-improvement and keeping up to date with the latest in research and technology. As a young professional it is important to set and achieve quantifiable milestones in order to progress and stay involved in your professional work; ASHRAE certification has helped me do that.
