[AUCK]LAND/16FE/05' d/s alongside, couple of tiny blemishes. Remarkable usage of a rare & attractive card; although a 1d postcard rate applied to New Zealand, the Cook Islands apparently did not benefit from any concessional rate until the introduction of 'Imperial Penny Postage' in 1911. 200 VICTORIA - OFFICIAL MAIL - FRANK STAMPS Lot 1143 1143 CL A- COMMANDANT LOCAL FORCES: Superb strike in blue on long envelope used locally, superb Melbourne duplex, light but very fine OHMS header & oval 'VICTORIAN NAVAL FORCES' cachets in purple, flap fault otherwise superb. 300 WESTERN AUSTRALIA - Postal History Lot 1283 1283 C A- 1853 part-entire (address panel only) to "The Admiralty/White Hall" endorsed "Ship Letter by Dido" rated "1/-" with legible strike of the rounded-boxed 'PAID/("28.2.53")/FREMANTLE' h/s in red. 150 Online Auction 2 Page:7 Lot Type Grading Description Est $A COCOS ISLANDS - Picture Postcards Lot 1341 1341 CA 1914 'Bravo "Sydney" the end of the Emden' real photo (J Allcot) hand-tinted card showing the HMAS Sydney firing upon and receiving return fire from the SMS Emden - whose aft-decks are alight - with a Cocos Islands atoll in background, used under cover, fine condition. [The 'Battle of Cocos' took place on 9.10.1914, with the HMAS Sydney responding to the German light cruiser's attack on the wireless and cable transmission station on Direction Island. The heavily-damaged Emden was beached on North Keeling Island, and most of the crew were sent to prisoner-of-war camps in Australia. The photographer must have been watching the battle from the Islands; an intriguing possibility is that 'J Allcot' may be the famous shipping artist John Charles Allcot who was working on Australian merchant ships at the time before settling down in Sydney in 1915] 80 GREAT BRITAIN - Picture Postcards Ex Lot 1463 1463 C A+ ALCOHOL & TEMPERANCE: c.1904 Robert Thompson & Co advertising cards for 'Vibrona: the Ideal Tonic Wine' 'Imperial Army Series' of noble servicemen in their gorgeous uniforms.
