GREECE FOOTSTEPS OF APOSTLE PAUL With Women of the Midwest! W! ! & M)%& September 14-23, 2022 Travel Solo Together CO | IA | KS | MN | MO | NE Dear Women of the Midwest, Hi, I’m Lora Black, the Ambassador for our journey to Greece and our tour of the beginnings of Christianity. We will start on the path, in the footsteps of the Apostle Paul, when we land in Thessaloniki- Greece’s second largest city. Our small group of 20 is joined upon arrival, with our private guide for this marvelous 10-day adventure. We will wander amongst the ruins of the Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman empires, as we travel the roads where Paul, Silas, Lydia and countless other names we know from the Bible, had traversed. Our footsteps lead us to many of the UNESCO World Heritage sites; Delphi, the Oracle, and Apollo’s Sanctuary, one of the 7 Wonders of the Ancient Greek World. We travel ‘up’ to the rock monastery at Meteora, where you’ll have spectacular views. We eventually arrive in Athens, where the first thing you will see is the Acropolis and the marble Parthenon-sparkling under the Greek sun. We will get to see the daily changing of the guards in front of the Presidential Palace and Tomb of the unknown soldier, the Panathenaic Stadium where the first Olympics of the modern era were held and more, in Greece’s capital city. Our final destination from Paul’s travels is the Ancient city of Corinth, once a bustling Roman trading city between the Ionian and Aegean Seas.

Lithostratigraphic units were described within these boreholes. Due to the lateral stratigraphic variations that were encountered, it was difficult to determine the accumulative displacement, as well as the slip rate of the fault. In order to overcome this problem micropaleontological analysis was performed. Foraminiferal assemblages were picked from approximately 100 samples from boreholes 3 and 7 from the footwall and the hangingwall respectively. Species were identified and grouped into seven subcategories.

  • Boundary Element Slope Instability Modeling of Corinth Canal, Greece Due to Nearby Fault Activation
Coastal Engineering 313 Boundary element slope instability modeling of Corinth Canal, Greece due to nearby fault activation G.-A. Tselentis & F. Gkika Seismological Laboratory, University of Patras, Greece Abstract Corinth Canal is one of the most important civil engineering marine projects in Greece, playing a key role in marine transportation in the Mediterranean. There have been many cases during the past where significant slope instability problems resulted in the abrupt closure of the canal causing serious transportation problems. In this work, three characteristic active faults located in the adjacent area of the Corinth Canal were simulated in order to describe their effect on the canal. Causative deformations and displacements were calculated using boundary element code in 3D grids representing the two sides in the canal. These simulations were conducted in order to define the most dangerous fault which could cause secondary instability effects along the slopes of the canal and to assess the damage distribution along the axis of the canal pinpointing regions of high instability risk. Keywords: slope instability, rupture propagation, Corinth Canal, Greece. 1 Introduction Corinth Canal is one of the most important civil engineering marine projects that were constructed in Greece during the 19th century, Figure 1. Geographically is located in the eastern border of the Corinth Gulf which is an asymmetric half- graben one of the most rapid developed intercontinental rifts in Europe. High seismicity concentration in the gulf shows that tectonic activity still takes place in this area, (e.g. Tselentis and Macropoulos [21], Billiris et al [2], Clarke et al [3], Doutsos and Kokkalas [8]).

  • Gazetteer of Stone Quarries in the Roman World
Gazetteer of Stone Quarries in the Roman World Version 1.0 (2013) Hosted by the Oxford Roman Economy Project: www.romaneconomy.ox.ac.uk Ben Russell ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– The following gazetteer of quarrying sites includes all those quarries at which activity in the Roman period is proven or suspected; where the chronology is not clear this fact is noted in the description. Such a catalogue is clearly far from exhaustive. It does not include, for example, any newly identified quarries published in the most recent ASMOSIA volume, though it does include references in this volume to quarries already incorporated into the gazetteer are noted.1 In practice, every urban centre in the Roman Empire, in addition to many rural sites, had one or more local quarries from which they extracted the bulk of their stone. The majority of these local quarries, however, are unexplored and unpublished. There must be hundreds if not thousands of other quarries that have yet to be documented. The aim of this catalogue, therefore, is to draw attention to those quarries that are known about. It is not a complete record but it is hoped that it might form the basis for future research. In this sense it is intended to build on and update some of the existing broader surveys of Roman quarrying, like those produced by Dworakowska and Braemer.2 Where possible the sites are quarries that have been identified as ‘Roman’. In some cases, however, it has been necessary to include sites at which stone was obviously quarried in the Roman period even if no traces of this activity survive.
