ABSTRACT This study is an ethnographic analysis of the relationship between female employers and female domestics in the Philippines focusing on how it maintains and reproduces the intersecting class and gender relations of power that brought the two women together. It also explores relationality - how the privileging of one group of women is related to the exploitation of another. Data for analysis was based on interviews with 25 female employer-female domestic dyads in a city in the Philippines in 1989. The questions for the semi-structured interviews were focused on four major research questions:1.) What kinds of female employer-female domestic relationship exist between the women in this city?; 2.) What makes one female employer-female domestic relationship similar to and different from another?; 3.) What is unique about the Philippine case in terms of this employer-employee relationship?; and 4.) How is the intersectionality of class and gender relations articulated in the female employer-female domestic relationship? The analysis reveals the existence of 4 types of female employer-female domestic relationships. The dynamics of dependency, fictive kinship, proprietarity, and deference are expressed in somewhat different ways. But in all case these ways indicate an asymmetric power relationship. The analysis suggests that these employers and domestics exhibit some level of agency, empowerment and solidarity in their daily interactions. However these are undermined by intersecting forces of class and gender relations in Philippine society. In particular “compandrazgo”, a system of patronage well-entrenched in Philippines society since the Spanish era, inhibits empowerment among domestics and female solidarity across class lines. However, instead of viewing these two forces as separate and independent of each other, I look at how they intersect and how their intersectionality affects women. At the same time I investigate relationality – i.e. how the privileging of one group of women is related to the exploitation of another less fortunate group. Specifically I look at class and gender relations in the Philippines focusing primarily on the relationship between women from the more privileged classes and the women from the poor. The resulting discussion, observations, reflections and conclusions come from interviews I conducted with 25 Filipino female employer-female domestic dyads in 1989. Although these interviews were from two decades ago on a limited sample of Filipino women, their experiences have implications for and resonate with the lives of women at a global perspective and at different periods in time. The relationship between the Filipino female domestic and her Filipino female employer does not develop in a vacuum. It is affected by the world they interact in. Therefore I begin with a survey of the social conditions in the Philippines at the time I talked with these women in 1989 and what the society is like today 2 decades later. It is also important to examine global migration especially the migration of women from Third World countries to richer economies, paying closer attention to the burgeoning

In the midst of the increasing profitability of palm oil in the world market, the versatility of its by- products and its potential as a source of biomass in the food and manufacturing industry, a raging debate has ensued between and amongst civil society and industry members over whether palm oil is a necessary evil or whether the costs of this industry on lives, land and environment far outweigh its worth. Although considered a fledgling industry in the Philippine agribusiness sector and while its size is certainly small compared to the millions of hectares of oil palm plantations in Malaysia and Indonesia, the Philippines has been cultivating and processing palm oil for the past three decades.

And thanks to municipal intervention and the eff orts of a school for disadvantaged children, the Ecuadorian capital’s historic heart is being revitalised. Dominic Hamilton reports rom the outside, the Escuela Taller Quito (Quito Workshop School) is deceiving. A two-storey mansion F set on one of the narrow streets in the Ecuadorian capital’s historic centre, it looks like a family home. Pass through its ornately carved doorway, however, and it’s another story. Pupils in blue overalls hurry between classrooms, criss-crossing the elegant patio in gaggles of three or four. A bell rings and a hush returns, although this, too, is deceptive. Enter one of the classrooms that ring the patio and you’re confronted with a hive of activity. The fi rst, adjacent to the entrance, is dedicated to carpentry. Inside, pupils are hard at work around half a dozen workbenches. Sketches and examples of completed works in marquetry and inlay decorate the walls. Sculptures at various stages of completion are scattered across the worktops, alongside tools of every size and function. There is a constant hum of knocking, carving, chipping, scraping and banging. The class is led by Maestro Carlos Vinicio Pazmiño, a tall, energetic man in his early 40s who passes from table to table surveying his pupils’ work. A room off to the right is quieter, bathed in studious silence.

    FILLIPINAS AND THE CHURCH: THE RECOVERY OF EGALITARIAN LEADERSHIP By Cynthia Datu Introduction The Filipino Church needs to hearken back to its roots. To be Filipino and Christian is to be egalitarian. Unfortunately this is not always the case when it comes to the role of women in church leadership. Filipino leadership needs to rediscover both reasons for the loss of egalitarianism within their churches and challenge a misguided belief that that the traditional indigenous worldview supports the supremacy of the male. To assist such a search/challenge the article begins with two case studies in the Faith Evangelical Church of the Philippines, a denomination taken as representative of the larger Philippine Evangelical Church in spite of its slightly liberal position on female leadership. Tracing the historical causes of female discrimination in the Philippines, the article reveals how Western biases impinged upon the Church and carry over to the present generation. There is a discrepancy between the perceived high status of women in society and their real status as male subordinates, including certain conditions manifested in the Philippine Evangelical Church. The article closes with recommendations for granting women greater participation in church leadership and achieving balance between males and females leadership.     THE VOYAGE OF THE BEAGLE by Charles Darwin PREFACE I have stated in the preface to the first Edition of this work, and in the Zoology of the Voyage of the Beagle, that it was in consequence of a wish expressed by Captain Fitz Roy, of having some scientific person on board, accompanied by an offer from him of giving up part of his own accommodations, that I volunteered my services, which received, through the kindness of the hydrographer, Captain Beaufort, the sanction of the Lords of the Admiralty. As I feel that the opportunities which I enjoyed of studying the Natural History of the different countries we visited, have been wholly due to Captain Fitz Roy, I hope I may here be permitted to repeat my expression of gratitude to him; and to add that, during the five years we were together, I received from him the most cordial friendship and steady assistance. Both to Captain Fitz Roy and to all the Officers of the Beagle [1] I shall ever feel most thankful for the undeviating kindness with which I was treated during our long voyage. This volume contains, in the form of a Journal, a history of our voyage, and a sketch of those observations in Natural History and Geology, which I think will possess some interest for the general reader. I have in this edition largely condensed and corrected some parts, and have added a little to others, in order to render the volume more fitted for popular reading; but I trust that naturalists will remember, that they must refer for details to the larger publications which comprise the scientific results of the Expedition.
