Aimed to facilitate the integration of women of color and Southern women into the college curriculum, this program was designed to increase access to the new scholarship on these groups; to work with faculty to develop a new vision of the curriculum; and to devise techniques to shape classroom dynamics to facilitate learning. The program involved the following activities:(1) development of a research clearinghouse, including an online database of bibliugraphic citations on the latest social science research on women of color and Southern women and a newsletter;(2) workshops for faculty and students on curriculum change (reaching about 150 faculty locally and nationally); and (3) seminars (monthly, for faculty, to discuss issues of content and pedagogy). Results of the program are discussed in terms of publications, curricula developed, presentations and workshops. OE RI position or policy INFORMATION 2 AVAILARF BESTCOPY I AASCU/ERIC Model Programs Inventory Project The AASCU/ERIC Model Programs Inventory is a two-year project seeking to establish and test a model system for collecting and disseminating information on model programs at AASCU-member institutions--375 of the public four-year colleges and universities in the United States. The four objectives of the project are: o To increase the information on model programs available to all institutions through the ERIC system o To encourage the use of the ERIC system by AASCU institutions o To improve AASCU's ability to know about, and share information on, activities at member institutions, and o To test a model for collaboration with ERIC that other national organizations might adopt. The AASCU/ERIC Model Programs Inventory Project is funded with a grant from the Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education to the American Association of State Colleges and Universities, in collaboration with the ERIC Clearinghouse on Higher Educationat The George Washington University. J Page 2 ABgERACT This project was designed to facilitate the integration ofwomen of color and Southernwomen into the college curriculum at Memphis State University, at other Mid -South institutions, and across the nation. TO do so, the project aimed: to increase access to the new scholarshipon these groups; to work with faculty to develop a new vision of the curriculum; and to devise techniques to shape classroan dynamics to facilitate learning by and aboutwomen of color and southern women. The project produced resource materials and worked with local faculty and faculty from around the nation in a variety ofways to change their teaching. We worked with faculty to revise courses in several formats: monthly seminars on women in the curriculum (approximately 5Garea faculty), three national workshops on women in the curriculum (about '.50 faculty), and in individual consultations.Many syllabi have been developed and revised and participating faculty have changed their teaching inmany ways. Significant impacts were also seen in the philosophy, guidelines andnew course developme& for the new general education program at Memphis State and in emerging general education and women's studies programs at IeMoyne-Owen College and Rhodes College respectively. Other programs have employed our model for workshops to integrate women of color and have developed on-line data bases using the Research Clearinghouse as a model. Project Products: 1. BNCNIRCUMIAND ORIGINS Memphis State University is an urban commuter institution with21,000 students most of whom are first generation college students. The median age is 27 years old, the majority are female and 20%are Black. In the last 25 years, the student bo4ylosixxxme more diverse, but has only minimally accommodated to the community in policies and proceduresas well as the curriculum. On the six campuses of the city of Memphis therewas only one women's studies program (at. Memphis State University) and onlyone other college with a course on women that was offered on a regular basis. In this context, the Center for Research on Warren was established in 1982 witha grant fran the Ford Foundation.The Center's mission is to promote, conduct, and disseminate social science and historical scholarshipon women of color and Southern women. B. PROJECT DESCRIPTION. Our broad goal was to impact mid-south institutions in addition to teachers, scholars, students, policy-makers and others nationwide.As we envisioned it, integrating women of color and southernwomen into college courses involves three activities: (1)obtaining access to information, that is, the new research and writingon these groups of women; (2) developing a theoretical perspective or vision of the subject matter Whichtakes warren of color and southern women out of the margins and places them at thecenter of the analysis; and (3) developing a new pedagogy which is generated out of the experiences of women of color and saathemaiwatennot out of dominant culture experiencethat is, developing teaching techniques and shapingclassroom dynamics to facilitate learning by and aboutwomen of color and southernmayen. Ourcurriculam integration work had two specific aims: (1) to increase access to the latest scholarship by developing a variety of resources; and (2) to facilitate the inclusion of the new scholarship into the curriculum by working with faculty to disseminate the scholarship andto develop the vision and pedagogy necessary to incorporate thisnew knowledge into their teaching. Dale Brown Maybe Denise Giardina has written too well about Appalachia. Storming Heaven (1987) and The Unquiet Earth (1992), the two novels set in the West Virginia coalfields of the author's childhood, have received serious critical attention: but with few exceptions, her other novels have been ignored by academic commentators. Had Giardina written with such perfect and articulate craft about Dublin or London or New York, critics might be slower to think of her simply as a regionalist or even a writer of place. And I suspect she would have less trouble being heard when she says, as she has many times, "As much as I'm an Appalachian writer, I get called a political writer, but the label that is most appropriate for my writing is theological writing" (Douglass 34).

Occupations: Sociologist; Academic Administrator Biographical Note Sociologist Joyce Ladner was born in Battles, Mississippi, on October 12, 1943. She attended Tougaloo College in Tougaloo, Mississippi, where she earned her B.A. in sociology in 1964 and went on to Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, to earn a Ph.D. in 1968. At school, she also became involved in the civil rights movement. After earning her Ph.D., Ladner went on to teach at colleges in Illinois; Washington, D.C.; Connecticut; and Tanzania. Ladner published her first book in 1971, Tomorrow's Tomorrow: The Black Woman, a study of poor black adolescent girls from St. Louis. In 1973, Ladner joined the faculty of Hunter College at the City University of New York. Leaving Hunter College for Howard University in Washington, D.C., Ladner served as vice president for academic affairs from 1990 to 1994 and as interim president of Howard University from 1994 to 1995. In 1995, President Bill Clinton appointed her to the District of Columbia Financial Control Board, where she oversees the finances and budgetary restructuring of the public school system. She is also a senior fellow in the Governmental Studies Program at the Brookings Institution, a Washington, D.C. think tank and research organization. She has spoken nationwide about the importance of improving education for public school students. She has appeared on nationally syndicated radio and television programs as well.
