The show opens Sunday, November 3, at the Performing Arts Theater, 540 Ashbury Ave., El Cerrito. Its run consists of a 5:00 p.m. opening (11/3), two 2:00 p.m. matinees (11/9, 11/10), and three 7:30 p.m. performances (11/7, 11/8, 11/9). Rent is a rock opera loosely based on Puccini’s La Boheme, with music, lyrics, and book by Jonathan Larson. Set in Lower Manhattan’s East Village during the turmoil of the AIDS crisis, this moving story chronicles the lives of a group of struggling artists over a year’s time. Its major themes are community, friendship, and survival. In 1996, Rent received four Tony Awards, including Best Musical; six Drama Desk Awards; and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. In 1997, it won the Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album. Its Broadway run lasted 12 years. Co-Director Jennifer Boesing comments, “Rent is a love story and a bold, brazen manifesto for young artists who are trying not just to stay alive, but to stay connected to each other, when the mainstream culture seems to be ignoring signs of destruction all around them. Although the show today is a period piece about a very specific historical moment—well before the earliest memories of our young performing artists—they relate to it deeply just the same. -

The first part of the thesis introduces Lloyd Webber’s biography, his close collaborators as well as his production company the Really Useful Group and description of all his works. The main part of the thesis is aimed at his musicals Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and Jesus Christ Superstar , rather their origin and development, the main plot and their main characters that have many things in common. Both these musicals are based on topics from the Bible. The thesis also deals with the librettos and their translation into Czech. Laird Date Approved: 5 December 2016 iii Abstract In 1968, the sound of the Broadway pit was forever changed with the rock ensemble that accompanied Hair. The musical backdrop for the show was appropriate for the countercultural subject matter, taking into account the popular genres of the time that were connected with such figures, and marrying them to other musical styles to help support the individual characters. Though popular styles had long been part of Broadway scores, it took more than a decade for rock to become a major influence in the commercial theater. The associations an audience had with rock music outside of a theater affected perception of the plot and characters in new ways and allowed for shows to be marketed toward younger demographics, expanding the audience base. Other shows contemporary to Hair began to include rock music and approaches as well; composers and orchestrators incorporated instruments such as electric guitar, bass, and synthesizer, amplification in the pit, and backup singers as components of their scores. -

At the heart of this pop-rock musical are the most feel-good of the parables of Jesus, mostly from the Gospel of Matthew, told by Andy Gonzalez as Jesus. His enthusiastic young followers respond with fun, uptempo songs as they dance through a brightly-colored playground, complete with swings and slide. Interestingly, many of the songs’ lyrics come from the Episcopal Church hymnal. Gonzalez, who at 19 is at the top of the teen cast’s age range, brings a grounded maturity to the role, and his voice is just to die for. Sporting a creditable Afro, he beams a near-constant benevolent smile as he coaxes his disciples out of their old ways of thinking and into the new teachings he brings, along with new behaviors—primary, of course, being the commandments to love God and your neighbor. In the second act, he grows more frustrated with his followers’ seeming lack of understanding of the point he’s trying to make, especially as he recognizes his own time running out and the long road ahead for the new Christians. There’s a bit of focus on the events leading up to the crucifixion, but really nothing directly pointing to the Resurrection. -

A Lighting Design Process for a Production of Godspell, Originally Conceived and Directed by John-Michael Tebelak with Music and New Lyrics by Stephen Schwartz A Thesis Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Master of Fine Arts in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Anthony Steven Pellecchia, B.A. Graduate Program in Theatre The Ohio State University 2009 Masters Exam Committee: Professor Mary Tarantino, Advisor Assistant Professor Mandy Fox Associate Professor Kristine Kearney Copyright by Anthony Steven Pellecchia 2009 Abstract Godspell originally conceived and directed by John-Michael Tebelak with music and new lyrics by Stephen Schwartz, was a theatrical production presented during the spring quarter of 2009 at The Ohio State University produced by the Department of Theatre in collaboration with The Columbus Association of the Performing Arts at the Southern Theatre. This thesis is a documentation of the lighting design process for Godspell. The first chapter is a examination of the Southern Theatre and the producing situation. The second and third chapters explore the design ideas for the production through director concept, collaboration and script analysis. The last two chapters examine the lighting design process from initial stages to final product and provide self- evaluation of the final design. The concept for the production was to connect Godspell to central Ohio by creating a visual environment that reflected the changing and struggling economic landscape of a downtown landmark. The production was developed, researched and designed in order for viewers to absorb the overarching message of Godspell, while becoming energized and inspired to change the world around them. -
