YMTC to Present the Rock Musical Rent, November 3–10 in El Cerrito
Youth Musical Theater Company FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Press Inquiries: Laura Soble/YMTC Phone 510-595-5514 Email: [email protected] Website: https://www.ymtcbayarea.org YMTC to Present the Rock Musical Rent, November 3–10 in El Cerrito Berkeley, California, September 27, 2019—Youth Musical Theater Company (YMTC) will launch its 15th season of acclaimed regional theater with the rock musical Rent. The show opens Sunday, November 3, at the Performing Arts Theater, 540 Ashbury Ave., El Cerrito. Its run consists of a 5:00 p.m. opening (11/3), two 2:00 p.m. matinees (11/9, 11/10), and three 7:30 p.m. performances (11/7, 11/8, 11/9). Rent is a rock opera loosely based on Puccini’s La Boheme, with music, lyrics, and book by Jonathan Larson. Set in Lower Manhattan’s East Village during the turmoil of the AIDS crisis, this moving story chronicles the lives of a group of struggling artists over a year’s time. Its major themes are community, friendship, and survival. In 1996, Rent received four Tony Awards, including Best Musical; six Drama Desk Awards; and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. In 1997, it won the Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album. Its Broadway run lasted 12 years. Co-Director Jennifer Boesing comments, “Rent is a love story and a bold, brazen manifesto for young artists who are trying not just to stay alive, but to stay connected to each other, when the mainstream culture seems to be ignoring signs of destruction all around them. Although the show today is a period piece about a very specific historical moment—well before the earliest memories of our young performing artists—they relate to it deeply just the same. -
DRAMATURGY GUIDE School of Rock: the Musical the National Theatre January 16-27, 2019
DRAMATURGY GUIDE School of Rock: The Musical The National Theatre January 16-27, 2019 Music by Andrew Lloyd Webber Book by Julian Fellowes Lyrics by Glenn Slater Based on the Paramount Film Written by Mike White Featuring 14 new songs from Andrew Lloyd Webber and all the original songs from the movie Packet prepared by Dramaturg Linda Lombardi Sources: School of Rock: The Musical, The Washington Post ABOUT THE SHOW Based on the hit film, this hilarious new musical follows Dewey Finn, a failed, wannabe rock star who poses as a substitute teacher at a prestigious prep school to earn a few extra bucks. To live out his dream of winning the Battle of the Bands, he turns a class of straight-A students into a guitar-shredding, bass-slapping, mind-blowing rock band. While teaching the students what it means to truly rock, something happens Dewey didn’t expect... they teach him what it means to care about something other than yourself. For almost 200 years, The National Theatre has occupied a prominent position on Pennsylvania Avenue – “America’s Main Street” – and played a central role in the cultural and civic life of Washington, DC. Located a stone’s throw from the White House and having the Pennsylvania Avenue National Historic Site as it’s “front yard,” The National Theatre is a historic, cultural presence in our Nation’s Capital and the oldest continuously operating enterprise on Pennsylvania Avenue. The non-profit National Theatre Corporation oversees the historic theatre and serves the DC community through three free outreach programs, Saturday Morning at The National, Community Stage Connections, and the High School Ticket Program. -

SOME KIND OF WAY OUT by BARBARA GORMAN A thesis submitted to the Graduate School-Camden Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Fine Arts Graduate Program in Creative Writing written under the direction of Prof. Lauren Grodstein and approved by ______________________________ Prof. Lauren Grodstein Camden, New Jersey October 2013 i THESIS ABSTRACT SOME KIND OF WAY OUT By BARBARA GORMAN Thesis Director: Prof. Lauren Grodstein Sixteen-year-old classic rock and blues guitar aficionado Drew Gilmore and his fourteen- year-old sister Cori have been helping their divorced mother Michelle cope with her advanced multiple sclerosis for the past two years to the best of their ability, but the severe sensory pain and uncontrollable muscle spasms have left Michelle, a former grocery store cashier, confined to a wheelchair most days and unable to sleep most nights. A concerned social worker and a few school staff members have begun to question whether Drew and Cori’s needs are being met at home. Drew is resistant and at times hostile toward any suggestions that Michelle may be unable to take care of them, insisting that he and Cori have plenty of help from family and friends in their working class neighborhood of Gloucester City, New Jersey, and that their father Frank, a prison guard who lives in Trenton, New Jersey, with his new wife and toddler son, does the grocery shopping and takes care of the bills. But Drew knows that things at home are far from okay, forcing things at school to a breaking point. -

Fly Over View of Musical Theatre History Rome Athens Modern drama can be traced Athens, Greece back to Greece in the 6th Century BC. It evolved from a religious Theatre of ceremony known as the Dionysus dithyramb, where 50 men Birthplace of dressed as satyrs would chant a theatre. choral song to the god Dionysus. • Only 1 to 3 actors performed 1st Actor • The chorus sang and danced but Thespis did not speak Rome We’re like the Greeks… only different! We like war and comedy! The Romans modeled their theatre after the Greeks. But rather than promoting moral values and philosophies, they stripped those things out. They kept the scandals and smut and left the religious messages out. They made fun of the middle class, and loved the gore and violence. Fly Over View of Musical Theatre History Medieval Times Rome Athens Medieval Europe Medieval Europe European Society was largely run by the Christian church. The Church did not like theatre. So they went in the complete opposite way from the Romans. • Almost all music was religious • Choirs used same Latin lyrics to different tunes • Street performers put on morality plays Performed in inn yards, pageant wagons, in the streets • Dance was evil – only of great cities, in the halls of knights, on top of hills or evil characters in play mountains. Stage production was temporary and could dance expected to be removed upon the completion of the performances.
