2 1 A Message from World Food Program USA

World Food Program USA (WFP USA) energizes the American public to take meaningful action to help solve global hunger. With your support, we are helping the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) save lives in emergencies, provide school meals to hungry children, improve the nutrition of the most vulnerable people at critical times in their lives and build the self-reliance of people and communities.

We believe we have the best job in the world. The impact of these efforts can be seen in the joy of a mother receiving nutritious food and giving birth to a healthy newborn baby. It is present when refugees purchase their own groceries in local markets. It shines in a child who sits in a classroom and dreams of becoming a doctor, an artist or an entrepreneur, with the help of a healthy meal.

In recent years, the rise of global food prices has pushed millions more into poverty and chronic hunger. These aftershocks linger for communities around the globe left vulnerable to economic volatility, food shortages or acts of nature. Climate change and political instability further threaten global food security.

But there’s good news. Innovations in policy and practice are helping to change the future of food assistance and empower local communities to build a world without Richard Leach and hunger. Technologies are enabling WFP and its partners to better map food security, Hunter Biden forecast crises and act early—as we saw this year when the international community rapidly mobilized to prevent a famine in the Sahel region of Africa.

Thanks to the generosity of so many individuals, foundations, corporations, schools and other organizations, we were able to help reach millions of hungry people in need this year. We continued to work closely with key leaders in the U.S. Congress and Administration to secure vital American support for global food security. Together, these contributions helped to make WFP’s global impact possible.

Thank you for all that you do to help us solve global hunger and bring a healthier future to millions.

Sincerely,

Richard Leach, Hunter Biden, President and CEO Chairman, Board of Directors

The Honorable George McGovern July 19, 1922 – October 21, 2012

This year, the world lost a legend in the field of global humanitarian work. The Honorable George McGovern is regarded by many as the founding father of the United Nations World Food Programme. A lifelong anti-hunger advocate, the late Senator helped craft many of the United States’ flagship food security programs—from food stamps at home to Food for Peace overseas. World Food Program USA is proud to honor the memory and legacy of our long-time board member and friend. George McGovern’s work has fed millions of people around the world, from those suffering food shortages in the aftermath of war and natural disaster to the chronically hungry and dispossessed.
