Making Ivan-Uzbek: War, Friendship of the Peoples, and the Creation of Soviet Uzbekistan, 1941-1945 By Charles David Shaw A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History in the Graduate Division of the University of California, Berkeley Committee in charge: Professor Yuri Slezkine, Chair Professor Victoria Frede-Montemayor Professor Victoria E. Bonnell Summer 2015 Abstract Making Ivan-Uzbek: War, Friendship of the Peoples, and the Creation of Soviet Uzbekistan, 1941-1945 by Charles David Shaw Doctor of Philosophy in History University of California, Berkeley Professor Yuri Slezkine, Chair This dissertation addresses the impact of World War II on Uzbek society and contends that the war era should be seen as seen as equally transformative to the tumultuous 1920s and 1930s for Soviet Central Asia. It argues that via the processes of military service, labor mobilization, and the evacuation of Soviet elites and common citizens that Uzbeks joined the broader “Soviet people” or sovetskii narod and overcame the prejudices of being “formerly backward” in Marxist ideology. The dissertation argues that the army was a flexible institution that both catered to national cultural (including Islamic ritual) and linguistic difference but also offered avenues for assimilation to become Ivan-Uzbeks, part of a Russian-speaking, pan-Soviet community of victors. Yet as the war wound down the reemergence of tradition and violence against women made clear the limits of this integration. The dissertation contends that the war shaped the contours of Central Asian society that endured through 1991 and created the basis for thinking of the “Soviet people” as a nation in the 1950s and 1960s.

Vision, Voice, and Audience in La Chartreuse de Parme Lottie Katz Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2015 © 2015 Lottie Katz All rights reserved ABSTRACT Vision, Voice, and Audience in La Chartreuse de Parme Lottie Katz This dissertation presents a close reading of Stendhal’s La Chartreuse de Parme, analyzing its written style, its themes, and the relationships between its numerous characters and narrative lines. Through a rigorous investigation of these factors, Stendhal’s explicit creative project emerges: the author’s desire to present himself as a storyteller in conversation with his reader. As storyteller, Stendhal applies himself to show rather than tell. In his narrative method first person often replaces the third; the story unfolds before the reader’s eyes as it would on a stage. The clarity and sobriety of Stendhal’s language becomes a vehicle for the vivid expressivity and dynamic energy that give rise to the Chartreuse’s blatant theatrical presentation. This analysis unfolds in five chapters and an epilogue, illuminating the foundations of Stendhal’s theatrical style. I. Caricature: The Rogues’ Gallery: An inquiry into the passages that present Stendhal at his satiric best. II. Sentence Structure: The stylistic characteristics that underpin theatrical presentation. III. The Emphasis on Time: Stendhal’s manipulation of narrative time facilitates the forward movement of the action; it is theatrical in the sense that there is a continuous flow of movement. IV. Architectural Structure: Enables the disparate components of the narrative to fit together, though there are a multitude.

The expedition failed – three days after the departure, the balloon landed on frozen sea and the three men tried to walk homewards for three months until they died. Thirty-three years later, their remains were found and, among them, Strindberg’s camera and exposed films. This article considers not only the questions that arise when we first see Strindberg’s images – how did this photograph survived and came to us? What happened after the balloon disappeared in the horizon? – but also aims to contextualize this photographic set in the history of Arctic imagery and to analyse its semantic resonances on artistic and authorial creation, thus demonstrating its importance, beyond an historical approach. Aboard, the photographer Nils Strindberg, meteorologist Knut Frænkel and chief engineer Salomon August Andrée. But how? Communists and democrats felt that they had the answers, but their answers often spawned little more than disillusion, protest, and unrest. Even as much of Europe managed to bounce back from war within only a few years, anxiety was often the principle result. Conflicting national identities, the development of youth culture, and a belief among many that Europe would either sink or swim as a single political and economic unit all shaped the postwar experience. This class will explore the story of European history from the end of World War II to the “War on Terror.” Topics will include (among others) the division of Europe into East and West, the rise of the European Union, the development of separatist nationalisms, and the astonishing proliferation of youth culture that both reflected and defined what took place on the political and economic stage. The class will include a combination of readings, lectures, and films. Students will be expected to participate actively in class discussion and activities, complete a series of short quizzes/papers, and ultimately write a substantial research paper. 2 REQUIRED TEXTS 1) Tom Buchanan, Europe’s Troubled Peace, 1945-2000 (London and New York: Blackwell Publishing, 2006).
