Nichts weiter als dornige Chancen: Zu Parametern und Maßeinheiten der Eye-Tracking-Translatorik ABSTRACT Problems? Nothing more than thorny chances: The parameters and measures of the eye-tracking translation studies Eye-tracking translation studies are based on the assumption that, on the one hand, eyeball movements are motivated by mental processes, and on the other hand, mental processes are motivated by eyeball movements. Th e standardisation of methodology, especially the lack of standard parameters, with the help of which eye-tracking experiments can be performed and analysed, is the most important issue of eye-tracking research. A non-standardised eye-tracking methodology implies that the comparison of eye-tracking research results is hardly possible. Th is paper proposes how eye-tracking research within translation studies can be standardised. Keywords: eye-tracking, parameters, metrics, methodology, translation studies. 1 Nach einem relativ kurzen „Wegschauen“ wendet sich die Translatorik nun seit mehr als zwei Jahrzehnten wieder prozessualen Fragen zu und ist in immer stär- kerem Maße bemüht, Antworten auf diese auch experimentell zu belegen. Die fortlaufend ansteigende Dichte technologisch hochentwickelter Untersuchungs- geräte hat zur Folge, dass der Forschungszugang zu ihnen auch immer unkom- plizierter wird – im Prinzip eine zu begrüßende Entwicklung. Doch zugleich ist die Translatorik nicht frei von zum Teil hochspekulativen Interpretationen experimentell erworbener Untersuchungsergebnisse. 12• Sambor Grucza Dabei bewegt sich die prozessual orientierte Translatorik auf einem sehr schwierigen Untersuchungsfeld, da die Frage nach der Relation zwischen Trans- lationskompetenzen und Gehirn das komplizierteste Questio der Translatorik darstellt. Die Geschichte der Versuche, diese Frage zu beantworten, ist voll von gegensätzlichen Erklärungsversuchen; einige von ihnen endeten auch schon mal in einer Sackgasse. Dies soll aber nicht wundern, da abgesehen von einigen Vi- sualisierungen einiger Gehirnfunktionen moderne neurobiologische Techniken immer noch nicht im Stande sind, zufriedenstellende Antworten auf Fragen der Geist-Gehirn-Relation zu liefern (vgl. G. Benedetti et al. 2009: 1). Die moderne experimentell orientierte Translatorik kann heute bei den Versuchen, sich einen „Einblick“ in die Translationskompetenzen zu verschaff en, auf die Elektro- und Magnetenzephalographie (EEG, MEG), die strukturelle und funktionelle Mag- netresonanztomographie (sMRI, fMRI) sowie auf das Eye-Tracking zurückgreifen. 2 Die Prämisse der Eye-Tracking-Translatorik besteht in der Annahme, dass zum einen Augenbewegungen durch mentale Prozesse und zum anderen mentale Pro- zesse durch die Augenbewegungen (Augenwahrnehmung) motiviert sind: We are assuming that the observable, measurable data that can be gained from eye tracking are indicators of unobservable cognitive processes happening in the subjects’ mind during the translation tasks. […] We are furthermore assuming that the data re- lated to the subjects’ focus on the source text (ST) section of the screen are indicators of ST processing (reading, comprehension), while those data related to the subjects’ focus on the target text (TT) section of the screen are related to TT processing (pro- duction, revision) (Pavlović / Jensen 2009: 94). Prévost’s Manon Lescaut and Her Transition to the Operatic Stage Lily Guerrero Senior Project, Frederik Meijer Honors College Grand Valley State University Dr. Kathryn Stieler, advisor 2 Prévost’s 1731 novel L'Histoire du chevalier des Grieux et de Manon Lescaut was an extremely controversial publication during its time. While the title expresses that it is a story concerning both Des Grieux and Manon, the latter is the character of interest for most readers. Many composers have fallen in love with this dangerous literary figure, and Manon’s story has culminated in operas by Massenet, Puccini, Henze, and Auber. What is it about Manon that inspires composers to translate Prévost’s written word to the operatic stage? Are these adaptations successful pieces of the operatic repertoire? Does Manon’s seemingly fickle nature become a caricature when transferred to the libretto, or do artistic teams successfully interpret this femme fatale of the stage? A study of the infatuation artists have with Manon and their commitment to the integrity of Prévost’s original Manon in their theatrical renditions of the character will shed light on these questions.

Ricordi & C. in Milan as applied to Giacomo Puccini's third opera and first popular success, Manon Lescaut (1893).1 In his letters the composer called it a "youthful" work with "some defects" and referred to his repeated efforts to "stabilize" the score.2 Therefore, as will be demonstrated, this oft-revised music provides typical examples of the editorial difficulties surrounding the twelve Puccini operas published by the Ricordi firm.3 Given the obvious limitations of this study, further research dedicated to the other operas is needed to construct a more exhaustive argument.4 However, some of the basic problems of editing these operas are examined in detail here.

    MANON AT THE OPERA: FROM PRÉVOST’S MANON LESCAUT TO AUBER’S MANON LESCAUT AND MASSENET’S MANON VINCENT GIROUD “Vous aimez l’Opéra: nous irons deux fois la semaine” (“You love opera: we’ll go twice a week”), Des Grieux promises Manon in Histoire du Chevalier des Grieux et de Manon Lescaut, as the lovers make plans for their life at Chaillot following their first reconciliation.1 Opera, in turn, has loved Manon, since there exist at least eight operatic versions of the Abbé Prévost’s masterpiece – a record for a modern classic.2 Quickly written in late 1730 and early 1731, the Histoire du Chevalier des Grieux et de Manon Lescaut first appeared in Amsterdam as Volume VII of Prévost’s long novel Mémoires d’un homme de qualité.3 An instantaneous success, it went 1 Abbé Prévost, Histoire du Chevalier des Grieux et de Manon Lescaut, ed. It argues that via the processes of military service, labor mobilization, and the evacuation of Soviet elites and common citizens that Uzbeks joined the broader “Soviet people” or sovetskii narod and overcame the prejudices of being “formerly backward” in Marxist ideology. The dissertation argues that the army was a flexible institution that both catered to national cultural (including Islamic ritual) and linguistic difference but also offered avenues for assimilation to become Ivan-Uzbeks, part of a Russian-speaking, pan-Soviet community of victors. Yet as the war wound down the reemergence of tradition and violence against women made clear the limits of this integration. The dissertation contends that the war shaped the contours of Central Asian society that endured through 1991 and created the basis for thinking of the “Soviet people” as a nation in the 1950s and 1960s.
