Abstract: A comprehensive and up to date summary of the literature on the helminth parasites of lizards and amphisbaenians from South America is herein presented. One-hundred eighteen lizard species from twelve countries were reported in the literature harboring a total of 155 helminth species, being none acanthocephalans, 15 cestodes, 20 trematodes and 111 nematodes. Of these, one record was from Chile and French Guiana, three from Colombia, three from Uruguay, eight from Bolivia, nine from Surinam, 13 from Paraguay, 12 from Venezuela, 27 from Ecuador, 17 from Argentina, 39 from Peru and 103 from Brazil. The present list provides host, geographical distribution (with the respective biome, when possible), site of infection and references from the parasites. A systematic parasite-host list is also provided. Key words: Cestoda, Nematoda, Trematoda, Squamata, neotropical. Bairro Maracanã, 20550-013 Rio de Janeiro, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil 1Corresponding author: [email protected] Abstract.—We estimated the population density, size, occupancy, and detectability of the lizard Ameivula nativo (no English common name), an endemic and endangered species, in one of the largest remnants of the Atlantic Forest in Espirito Santo, Brazil, by using methods that consider imperfect detectability. We used linear transect surveys to estimate density and abundance. We also used transect data to estimate large and small-scale species occupancy using six covariates (sampled region, the proportion of exposed soil, the proportion of shrub cover, the proportion of herbaceous cover, air temperature, and relative humidity). The estimated overall density for A. nativo in the Vale Natural Reserve (VNR) was 11.03 ± 2.07 (standard error) individuals/ha with an estimated population size of 7,258 ± 1,365 individuals. At large scales, A. nativo occupancy probability was influenced by region, and local scale occupancy was influenced by proportion of exposed soil. Detectability was affected only by the air temperature, which may be a result of the species physiology because it is an active forager. -

Only one species, the nematode Spauligodon saxicolae (Pharyngodonidae), was found. The extremely low infection and diversity parameters, falling among the lowest within the Pal- aearctic saurians, support depauperate helminth communities for these parthenogenetic lacertid lizards. Our results suggest that parthenogenetic Darevskia follow a pattern of parasitism similar to other unisexual lizards (i.e. Aspidocelis). The low rates of infection and diversity may be explained by the decreasing opportunities for interchanging helminths rather than factors of susceptibility of unisexual hosts. -

Project Background/Rationale • Describe the location and circumstances of the project The Atelopus Initiative is a regional project funded by a generous grant by the Darwin Initiative (DI), encompassing the five tropical Andean nations of Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia. Following the results of the Global Amphibian Assessment (GAA) and the National Assessment processes developed in Venezuela, Colombia and Peru, which found that almost one third of all known amphibian species are currently considered to be threatened, the project team proposed the Atelopus Initiative as a response to address the amphibian population declines and extinction crisis in the tropical Andes. Amazon Alive! A decade of discovery 1999-2009 The Amazon is the planet’s largest rainforest and river basin. It supports countless thousands of species, as well as 30 million people. © Brent Stirton / Getty Images / WWF-UK © Brent Stirton / Getty Images The Amazon is the largest rainforest on Earth. It’s famed for its unrivalled biological diversity, with wildlife that includes jaguars, river dolphins, manatees, giant otters, capybaras, harpy eagles, anacondas and piranhas. The many unique habitats in this globally significant region conceal a wealth of hidden species, which scientists continue to discover at an incredible rate. Between 1999 and 2009, at least 1,200 new species of plants and vertebrates have been discovered in the Amazon biome (see page 6 for a map showing the extent of the region that this spans). The new species include 637 plants, 257 fish, 216 amphibians, 55 reptiles, 16 birds and 39 mammals. In addition, thousands of new invertebrate species have been uncovered. Owing to the sheer number of the latter, these are not covered in detail by this report. This report has tried to be comprehensive in its listing of new plants and vertebrates described from the Amazon biome in the last decade. But for the largest groups of life on Earth, such as invertebrates, such lists do not exist – so the number of new species presented here is no doubt an underestimate. II: Redescription of Atelopus pulcher (ßoULENGER, 1882) from the eastern Andean versant in Peru STEFAN LöTTERS, WINFRIED HAAs, SUSANNE So-rrcK & WOLFGANG BöHME Zusammenfassung Zur Systematik der Harlekinfrösche (Amphibia: Bufonidae: Atelopus) aus Amazonien. II: Wiederbeschreibung von Atelopus pulcher (BouLENGER, 1882) vom östlichen Andenabhang in Peru. Die Systematik der neotropischen Bufoniden-GattungAtelopus ist kompliziert. Die Arten sind zum einen sehr merkmalsarm und können sich daher sehr ähnlich sehen; zugleich kann innerhalb mancher Arten die Merkmalsausprägung auch sehr variabel sein. Atelopus spumarius umschließt einen Artenkomplex, der im Amazonas-Becken sowie am Ost-Abhang der Anden und in der Guyana-Region vorkommt. In Peru können neben A. ,pumarius sensu stricto mindestens zwei weitere Arten unterschieden werden. Sie unterscheiden sich in der Lebendfärbung, Zeichnung, Adult-Größe, Hauttextur, Larvalmorphologie und im innerartlichen Kommunikationsverhalten (Winken mit dem Vorderfuß, Rufe). In dieser Arbeit wird A. pulcher vom östlichen Anden Abhang (Departamentos Loreto und San Martin) aus der Synonymie von A. spumarius heraus genommen. Es werden gepulste Rufe sowie die Larve von A. pulcher, deren oberer Homschnabel kürzer ist als der untere, beschrieben. Zudem wird ein alphataxonomischer Überblick über die Gattung Atelopus in Amazonien sowie den angrenzenden Gebieten gegeben. Abstract Systematics ofthe Neotropical bufonid genus Atelopus are complicated. On the one hand, species are poor in characters and hence similar to each other; on the other hand, within some species characters are very variable. Atelopus spumarius comprises a complex of species, distributed in the Amazon basin as weil as on the eastem versant of the Andes and in the Guianan region. -
