This is because we are an international community, and our policy is to use the language that all of our students from all over the world can use best. Our purpose is not simply “Studying English”, but “Studying with and through English”, with the aim of using it to read, think and express ourselves freely in the world’s international language. This experience in your first semesters will prepare you for your year of overseas study, too. For most of you, study abroad is a necessary element of your course, not a mere option. If you do not think your English level is good enough yet, seek help and it will be given; if your English is already good enough, remember that Japanese is necessary for surviving in Japan and for moving on to higher education in Japan. Learning yet another language is also very important, especially if you hope to study or work in a non-English-speaking country. Other schools at Waseda are introducing English-based courses, too; please find out about what the other schools can offer – in any language. One big difference at SILS is the Liberal-Arts-based curriculum, in which you do not concentrate on one narrow major, but gain knowledge and analytical skills in a wide range of fields. Please take advantage of these opportunities. Advice will be given on choosing a central topic or topics to study later on, if you wish. Do make full use of the University’s excellent library system, museums, computer network, sports facilities, health centre, dining rooms, meeting spaces, Student Building and so on. Do not be afraid to ask for information about any part of the University, or about any aspect of your studies or your personal life. SILS offers the most diverse cultural environment in Waseda, with overseas students of many nationalities entering in April and September, as well as students from other institutions on one-year study-abroad programs.
