  • The Holy See
The Holy See BENEDICT XVI GENERAL AUDIENCE St. Peter's Square Wednesday, 5 October 2011 [Video] Psalm 23 Dear Brothers and Sisters, Turning to the Lord in prayer implies a radical act of trust, in the awareness that one is entrusting oneself to God who is good, “merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness” (Ex 34:6-7; Ps 86[85]:15; cf. Joel 2:13; Jon 4:2; Ps 103 [102]:8; 145[144]:8; Neh 9:17). For this reason I would like to reflect with you today on a Psalm that is totally imbued with trust, in which the Psalmist expresses his serene certainty that he is guided and protected, safe from every danger, because the Lord is his Shepherd. It is Psalm 23 [22, according to the Greco-Latin numbering], a text familiar to all and loved by all. “The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want”: the beautiful prayer begins with these words, evoking the nomadic environment of sheep-farming and the experience of familiarity between the shepherd and the sheep that make up his little flock. The image calls to mind an atmosphere of trust, intimacy and tenderness: the shepherd knows each one of his sheep and calls them by name; and they follow him because they recognize him and trust in him (cf. Jn 10:2-4). He tends them, looks after them as precious possessions, ready to defend them, to guarantee their well-being and enable them to live a peaceful life. They can lack nothing as long as the shepherd is with them.

St. Gerard Majella Feast: October 16 Facts Feast Day: October 16 Patron: of expectant mothers Death: 1755 Beatified: January 29, 1893, by Pope Leo XIII Canonized: December 11, 1904, by Pope Saint Pius X St. Gerard Majella is the patron of expectant mothers. He was born in 1726 in Muro, Italy to a family of seven. Majella grew up in a poverty with a great respect for the poor. As he was just 12 when his father passed away, he was forced to grow up fast. Shortly after his father's death, his mother sent him away to live with his uncle and learn to become a tailor, like his father. After a few years of working as a sewing apprentice, Majella took on a job with the local Bishop of Lacedonia as a servant. Once Majella began earning money as a journeyman at the age of 21, he split his earnings with his mother, the poor of Muro and the rest in offerings for the poor souls. As the days passed, Majella began to grow pale and thin, often fasting and in prayer at a nearby Cathedral. He applied to the Capuchin monastery at Muro twice, but was turned down both times. Majella was told his health was not well enough for such a strenuous life. However, Majella did not give up. In 1749, at the age of 23, he joined the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer and just three years later became a professed lay brother. Majella lived with the three vows of Poverty, Chasity and Obedience.

From his parents, Gerard learned the love of prayer and sacrifice. When his father died, Gerard, being the only boy, had to provide for his family by working as a tailor. At the age of fourteen he sought to enter the Capuchin friary but was rejected because of his delicate health. After a short time as the domestic servant of the bishop of Lacedonia, he returned to tailoring, but with minimal income. In April of 1749, with utter tenacity, he succeeded in getting himself accepted by the Redemptorists who had preached a popular mission in Muro. After a trial period and a year of novitiate in the house at Deliceto, he made his religious profession on July 16, 1752. He was very observant of the rule while at the same time going about the surrounding countryside to collect money for the material needs of the community. DRAFT 2 Chapter One Stigmatized by Choice: The Self-Fashioning of Anna Katharina Emmerick, 1813 Introduction: Whose Story? The residents of Dülmen had plenty to talk about and worry over in March of 1813. By then, the Westphalian village had seen three regime changes over the course of a decade of war.1 As the front line of the battle between Napoleon’s Imperial France and the other European powers had shifted, passing soldiers made camp in Dülmen’s fields and requisitioned its goods – over 15,000 of them at one point, overwhelming the community’s 2,000 inhabitants. The French Revolution had come to their doorstep: the annexed village’s Augustinian convent was secularized, its peasants emancipated. Twenty of Dülmen’s young men had just recently been conscripted into Napoleon’s Grand Armeé, joining its long march to Russia. Now the Russian campaign was over, all twenty Dülmener soldiers were dead, and not only retreating French but Prussian and Russian troops were heading Dülmen’s way.2 Despite all these pressing concerns, a growing number of Dülmeners were talking in the streets and taverns about something else entirely: Anna Katharina Emmerick, the bedridden spinster forced to leave Dülmen’s convent upon its secularization. This peasant woman, rumor 1 At the time of Emmerick’s birth, Dülmen was part of the Prince-Bishopric of Münster. The last Prince-Bishop of Münster died in exile in Vienna in 1801, and the Prince-Bishopric was formally dissolved by the Reichsdeputationshauptschluß of 25 February 1803 (for more on this document, see p. 14 below).

The Armor of Faith Topic Summary: Saints of Inspiration Part IV: Saint of Mothers Saint Gerard Majella Public Domain Introduction [Greeting:] → Welcome to “The Armor of Faith,” a show where we hope to bring our listeners closer to the Word of God and the blessings we receive through living in the fullness of the Catholic faith. My name is Doug and I will be your host as we discuss the blessings of the Church Christ built upon Peter. I am joined today by my panel: [names] Helen is a lay-Dominican with a love for music ministry. The Dominicans, I always mention, are also known as the Order of Preachers. Sharon, in addition to being my lovely wife as well as a wonderful blessing, is a youth and adult formation catechist. We are also blessed to have on our panel, Donna Mae, who is the artist who sculpted the statue of Our Lady of America which was carried by our youth and blessed by Saint John Paul II at the 1993 Word Youth Day. Of course, as everyone knows by now, I am simply here to ask questions because that is one way of learning from the people who have answers? The hard part we leave to our panelists, which is to answer my questions, correct my pronunciation, and make sure I know which century I am talking about, so welcome to our panelists as well as to our listeners. Let us open with a prayer: In the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Heavenly Father, we lift up our hearts in thanks and praise for this opportunity to open and share your Holy Word this day.
