A Message from the Pastor Dear Brothers and Sisters, This past Friday, the Church celebrated the Solemnity of St. Joseph. Because much of the past year has been a blur due to the pandemic, we may have missed that Pope Francis called for a year dedicated to St. Joseph. The celebratory year began last December 8th, the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, and will conclude on the same feast this year. The year 2021 marks the 150th anniversary of St. Joseph being declared by Blessed Pope Pius IX as the Patron Saint of the Universal Church. To inaugurate this Year of St. Joseph, Pope Francis wrote a pastoral letter entitled With a Father’s Heart, which expounds upon the virtues that St. Joseph lived and the example he displayed of humble trust in God’s providence. (You can find the Holy Father’s full letter either on the Vatican’s website or from the links provided on our parish website.) Perhaps surprisingly to some, St. Joseph has two memorials on the liturgical calendar. The more well-known is March 19th, but the other is May 1st. The latter feast celebrates St. Joseph as a workman, laboring each day to provide for his family. It’s interesting that St. Joseph never speaks in the Gospels. While very much an active part in the early life of Jesus, he is never quoted; rather, he receives God’s word and acts upon it swiftly. Where- as the Blessed Mother speaks multiple times from the Annunciation to the wedding feast at Cana, Joseph gives us the example of being a silent witness to God’s will. As we continue through this year, perhaps we can make a renewed effort to know more about St. Joseph and to make him an intercessor for ourselves and our families. While I was studying in Rome, one of my faculty mem- bers made a suggestion that I took to heart and have kept up all these years later. He noted that we who were across the Atlantic, separated from family and loved ones, would likely feel anxiety from not being close to them, especially when we would normally be there to help, such as in an emergency or sickness. Clearly, we couldn’t go back and forth! But Father exhorted us to entrust our families to the Guardian of the Holy Family, St. Joseph. I repeat this suggestion for you. Develop a devotion to St. Joseph and allow him, each day, to appeal to our Blessed Lord and His Mother for all those you hold within your heart. A Daily Prayer to St. Joseph Hail, Guardian of the Redeemer, Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary. To you God entrusted his only Son; in you Mary placed her trust; with you Christ became man. Blessed Joseph, to us too, show yourself a father and guide us in the path of life. Obtain for us grace, mercy, and courage, and defend us from every evil. Amen. • St. Gerard Majella Feast: October 16
St. Gerard Majella Feast: October 16 Facts Feast Day: October 16 Patron: of expectant mothers Death: 1755 Beatified: January 29, 1893, by Pope Leo XIII Canonized: December 11, 1904, by Pope Saint Pius X St. Gerard Majella is the patron of expectant mothers. He was born in 1726 in Muro, Italy to a family of seven. Majella grew up in a poverty with a great respect for the poor. As he was just 12 when his father passed away, he was forced to grow up fast. Shortly after his father's death, his mother sent him away to live with his uncle and learn to become a tailor, like his father. After a few years of working as a sewing apprentice, Majella took on a job with the local Bishop of Lacedonia as a servant. Once Majella began earning money as a journeyman at the age of 21, he split his earnings with his mother, the poor of Muro and the rest in offerings for the poor souls. As the days passed, Majella began to grow pale and thin, often fasting and in prayer at a nearby Cathedral. He applied to the Capuchin monastery at Muro twice, but was turned down both times. Majella was told his health was not well enough for such a strenuous life. However, Majella did not give up. In 1749, at the age of 23, he joined the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer and just three years later became a professed lay brother. Majella lived with the three vows of Poverty, Chasity and Obedience.

SACRAMENTARY AND LECTIONARY SUPPLEMENTTHE CONGREGATION OF THE MOST HOLY REDEEMER: SAINT GERARD MAJELLA Memorial OCTOBER 16 SAINT GERARD MAJELLA, Religious GERARD MAJELLA WAS BORN IN MURO LUCANO (Potenza) in southern Italy on April 6, 1726, in a family of humble circumstances. From his parents, Gerard learned the love of prayer and sacrifice. When his father died, Gerard, being the only boy, had to provide for his family by working as a tailor. At the age of fourteen he sought to enter the Capuchin friary but was rejected because of his delicate health. After a short time as the domestic servant of the bishop of Lacedonia, he returned to tailoring, but with minimal income. In April of 1749, with utter tenacity, he succeeded in getting himself accepted by the Redemptorists who had preached a popular mission in Muro. After a trial period and a year of novitiate in the house at Deliceto, he made his religious profession on July 16, 1752. He was very observant of the rule while at the same time going about the surrounding countryside to collect money for the material needs of the community. His presence to 1 /11 SACRAMENTARY AND LECTIONARY SUPPLEMENTTHE CONGREGATION OF THE MOST HOLY REDEEMER: SAINT GERARD MAJELLA people, who were weighed down by poverty and illiteracy and at the mercy of epidemics and crop failures, was seen as a sign of hope. Gerard had a deep empathy for them and gave to all a testimony to trust in the love and compassion of God. During his five years as a lay brother in the Congregation, he was remarkable for his apostolic zeal, patience in sickness, love for the poor, deep humility in the face of false accusation, heroic obedience, spirit of penance and constancy in prayer.

The Armor of Faith Topic Summary: Saints of Inspiration Part IV: Saint of Mothers Saint Gerard Majella Public Domain Introduction [Greeting:] → Welcome to “The Armor of Faith,” a show where we hope to bring our listeners closer to the Word of God and the blessings we receive through living in the fullness of the Catholic faith. My name is Doug and I will be your host as we discuss the blessings of the Church Christ built upon Peter. I am joined today by my panel: [names] Helen is a lay-Dominican with a love for music ministry. The Dominicans, I always mention, are also known as the Order of Preachers. Sharon, in addition to being my lovely wife as well as a wonderful blessing, is a youth and adult formation catechist. We are also blessed to have on our panel, Donna Mae, who is the artist who sculpted the statue of Our Lady of America which was carried by our youth and blessed by Saint John Paul II at the 1993 Word Youth Day. Of course, as everyone knows by now, I am simply here to ask questions because that is one way of learning from the people who have answers? The hard part we leave to our panelists, which is to answer my questions, correct my pronunciation, and make sure I know which century I am talking about, so welcome to our panelists as well as to our listeners. Let us open with a prayer: In the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Heavenly Father, we lift up our hearts in thanks and praise for this opportunity to open and share your Holy Word this day.

(Luke 14:2533) One of the comments I’ve received when I moved to St. Gerard’s in Baton Rouge to work for the next four years is “Fr. Tat, you will be close to your family. You can go to New Orleans every week to visit your Mom and your family.” That is true and not true. It is true because yes, it is much more convenient to drive home to see Mommy in New Orleans. It takes me only one hour and 30 minutes. I will enjoy Mom’s food more easily compared with the last times when I stationed in Chicago and New York City. But it is not true because I am a Redemptorist missionary. I belong to everyone. Wherever I am sent, I call it home for myself. Every parishioner is part of my family. My parents have generously offered me to God to serve the Church since I entered into the Redemptorist formation in 1998. The most difficult cross for those who want to follow Jesus is not about the cross of family but the cross of their own.

Therefore we feel the need to thank all those people whose contributions have made it possible to bring this work to its conclusion, and most particularly: the Redemptorists - Emilio Lage, for his suggestions and for making himself fraternally available to read the manuscript; - Antonio Marrazzo for the photographic documentation, compiled with love and competence; - the Redemptoristine Sr. Filomena Occini for her patient commitment to the electronic transcription of Mother M. With the same appreciation, we would like to express our gratitude to the staff of the Valsele Printing House, beginning with their Director, P. English Translator’s Note: I would certainly like to endorse all the acknowledgements recorded above at the beginning of the Italian critical edition, particularly in the case of Father Emilio Lage, without whose help and support this English translation could not have been achieved. Nevertheless, any remaining errors and lapses of judgement are my own. I would also like to record my thanks to the Redemptoristine Nuns of Australia for their unswerving support in what has been quite a challenge, in particular the Prioress, Mother Mary Teresa.

If your middle 100 Years name is Gerard or you know someone by that name, it is very likely that St. Gerard’s a Saint intercession was invoked at the time of birth.
