St. Gerard Majella Feast Day: October 16 St. Gerard Majella was born in Muro Lucano, Italy, on April 6, 1726, into a humble family. From his parents he learned the love of prayer and sacrifice. When his father died, Gerard, being the only son, had to provide for his family by working as a tailor. At the age of 14 he sought to enter the Capuchin friary but was rejected because of his poor health. After a short time as the domestic servant of the bishop of Lacedo- nia, he returned to tailoring but earned a minimal income. In April 1749, after attending a Redemptorist mission in Muro, Gerard succeeded in getting himself ac- cepted by the congregation. Following a trial period and a year of novitiate in the house at Deliceto, he professed religious vows on July 16, 1752. Gerard was noted for his observance of the Redemptorist rule and collecting money for the material needs of the community. His presence to people who were weighed down by poverty and illiteracy was a sign of hope to them. Gerard had great empathy and testified to trust in the love and the compassion of God. During his five years as a lay brother in the congregation Gerard was remarkable for his apostolic zeal, patience in sickness, love for the poor, deep humility in the face of false accusations, heroic obedience, spirit of penance, and constancy in prayer. He wrote numerous letters of spiritual direction. The Lord favored him with many spiritual gifts, including prophecy, the ability to read people’s hearts, and the gifts of miracles. He died at Materdomini on October 16, 1755. Gerard was canonized by St. Pius X on December 11, 1904. He is invoked as a patron of mothers, espe- cially in time of pregnancy. Couples hoping to conceive a child also seek St. Gerard’s intercession. The shrine of St. Gerard Majella is at the basilica in Materdomini, Italy.     St. Gerard Majella Feast: October 16 Facts Feast Day: October 16 Patron: of expectant mothers Death: 1755 Beatified: January 29, 1893, by Pope Leo XIII Canonized: December 11, 1904, by Pope Saint Pius X St. Gerard Majella is the patron of expectant mothers. He was born in 1726 in Muro, Italy to a family of seven. Majella grew up in a poverty with a great respect for the poor. As he was just 12 when his father passed away, he was forced to grow up fast. Shortly after his father's death, his mother sent him away to live with his uncle and learn to become a tailor, like his father. After a few years of working as a sewing apprentice, Majella took on a job with the local Bishop of Lacedonia as a servant. Once Majella began earning money as a journeyman at the age of 21, he split his earnings with his mother, the poor of Muro and the rest in offerings for the poor souls. As the days passed, Majella began to grow pale and thin, often fasting and in prayer at a nearby Cathedral. He applied to the Capuchin monastery at Muro twice, but was turned down both times. Majella was told his health was not well enough for such a strenuous life. However, Majella did not give up. In 1749, at the age of 23, he joined the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer and just three years later became a professed lay brother. Majella lived with the three vows of Poverty, Chasity and Obedience.

(Luke 14:2533) One of the comments I’ve received when I moved to St. Gerard’s in Baton Rouge to work for the next four years is “Fr. Tat, you will be close to your family. You can go to New Orleans every week to visit your Mom and your family.” That is true and not true. It is true because yes, it is much more convenient to drive home to see Mommy in New Orleans. It takes me only one hour and 30 minutes. I will enjoy Mom’s food more easily compared with the last times when I stationed in Chicago and New York City. But it is not true because I am a Redemptorist missionary. I belong to everyone. Wherever I am sent, I call it home for myself. Every parishioner is part of my family. My parents have generously offered me to God to serve the Church since I entered into the Redemptorist formation in 1998. The most difficult cross for those who want to follow Jesus is not about the cross of family but the cross of their own.

I remember when I was on pilgrimage to the shrine of Saint Gerard in Mater- domini, Italy. There were crowds of peo- ple gathering around his shrine, lighting votive candles and leaving written notes addressed to him. This simple familiar- ity with this saint touched me greatly. It felt like he was still alive walking among all the people. It was clear that to me this gathering of people around his shrine was like a Sunday gathering at the home of a favorite grandparent or beloved aunt or uncle. I know I’m late, but Ann broke her doll and I had to help her fix it.” “And just how were you able to help her fix that broken doll?” J In her precious, childlike manner the girl responded, “I really couldn’t, but I sat down with her and helped her cry.” St. Gerard Majella is considered the patron of mothers-to-be. If your middle 100 Years name is Gerard or you know someone by that name, it is very likely that St. Gerard’s a Saint intercession was invoked at the time of birth. He continues to offer hope when life seems fragile or broken. Unlike many theologians of his time who often appeared remote and lofty, Gerard had a childlike manner that allowed him to accompany Canonized by people on their journey, and help them laugh tears of joy or cry tears of sorrow. Pope St. Pius X October 16 is the feast day of St. Gerard Majella. He was a contemporary of the December 11, 1904 Redemptorist founder, St. Alphonsus Liguori, and a member of the Congregation to which St.
