St. Gerard Majella Feast: October 16 Facts Feast Day: October 16 Patron: of expectant mothers Death: 1755 Beatified: January 29, 1893, by Pope Leo XIII Canonized: December 11, 1904, by Pope Saint Pius X St. Gerard Majella is the patron of expectant mothers. He was born in 1726 in Muro, Italy to a family of seven. Majella grew up in a poverty with a great respect for the poor. As he was just 12 when his father passed away, he was forced to grow up fast. Shortly after his father's death, his mother sent him away to live with his uncle and learn to become a tailor, like his father. After a few years of working as a sewing apprentice, Majella took on a job with the local Bishop of Lacedonia as a servant. Once Majella began earning money as a journeyman at the age of 21, he split his earnings with his mother, the poor of Muro and the rest in offerings for the poor souls. As the days passed, Majella began to grow pale and thin, often fasting and in prayer at a nearby Cathedral. He applied to the Capuchin monastery at Muro twice, but was turned down both times. Majella was told his health was not well enough for such a strenuous life. However, Majella did not give up. In 1749, at the age of 23, he joined the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer and just three years later became a professed lay brother. Majella lived with the three vows of Poverty, Chasity and Obedience.

SACRAMENTARY AND LECTIONARY SUPPLEMENTTHE CONGREGATION OF THE MOST HOLY REDEEMER: SAINT GERARD MAJELLA Memorial OCTOBER 16 SAINT GERARD MAJELLA, Religious GERARD MAJELLA WAS BORN IN MURO LUCANO (Potenza) in southern Italy on April 6, 1726, in a family of humble circumstances. From his parents, Gerard learned the love of prayer and sacrifice. When his father died, Gerard, being the only boy, had to provide for his family by working as a tailor. At the age of fourteen he sought to enter the Capuchin friary but was rejected because of his delicate health. After a short time as the domestic servant of the bishop of Lacedonia, he returned to tailoring, but with minimal income. In April of 1749, with utter tenacity, he succeeded in getting himself accepted by the Redemptorists who had preached a popular mission in Muro. After a trial period and a year of novitiate in the house at Deliceto, he made his religious profession on July 16, 1752. He was very observant of the rule while at the same time going about the surrounding countryside to collect money for the material needs of the community. His presence to 1 /11 SACRAMENTARY AND LECTIONARY SUPPLEMENTTHE CONGREGATION OF THE MOST HOLY REDEEMER: SAINT GERARD MAJELLA people, who were weighed down by poverty and illiteracy and at the mercy of epidemics and crop failures, was seen as a sign of hope. During his five years as a lay brother in the Congregation, he was remarkable for his apostolic zeal, patience in sickness, love for the poor, deep humility in the face of false accusation, heroic obedience, spirit of penance and constancy in prayer.

  • A Mass in Celebration of the Beatification of Fr. Michael
A Mass in Celebration of the Beatification of Fr. Michael McGivney, Diocesan Priest and Founder of the Knights of Columbus Saturday of the 30th Week of Ordinary Time Homily of Bishop John O. Barres Diocese of Rockville Centre St. Mary’s Church, New Haven, CT October 31, 2020 Holy priests have shaped the history of the United States. Their heroism, evangelizing zeal, and pastoral charity are woven into our nation’s story. Looking to those priest Saints and Blesseds who labored in this part of God’s vineyard that is the land of the free and the home of the brave, we see a wide and beautiful American kaleidoscope of “holiness and mission” in the Catholic priesthood. Think of the New York Jesuit martyrs: Saints Isaac Jogues (1607-1646), Rene Goupil (1608-1642), and Jean de Lalande (d. 1646). Recall the Redemptorist Saint John Neumann (1811-1860), the Bishop of Philadelphia, and his confrere, Blessed Francis Xavier Seelos (1819-1867). See the missionary hearts of Saint Juniper Serra (1713-1784) in California and Saint Damien of Molokai (1840-1889) in Hawaii. Call to mind the Capuchin Blessed Solanus Casey (1870-1957), a mystical porter who opened the Doors of Christ to so many souls. 2 Think, too, of Blessed Stanley Rother (1935-1981), a parish priest-missionary from Oklahoma who died as a parish priest-martyr in Guatemala. Spanning centuries, their priestly holiness has animated the life of the Church and contributed to our growth as one nation under God. -- Thanks be to God, today, October 31, 2020, this illustrious list of priest Saints and Blesseds has been increased with the Beatification of Father Michael J.

When his father objected, Francis 19-20; Mt 22:1-14 [1-10] disrobed: “I return the clothes, your name, and all you gave me: God alone is my Father now.” Later, the pope would dream of a ragged friar stretching forth a single Saints and Special Observances hand to prop up the crumbling papal Cathedral of Saint Sunday: Twenty-seventh Sunday in Ordinary John Lateran.
