Always listen to it with attention and reverence.” - St Francis de Sales TODAY’S READINGS SAINTS & SPECIAL OBSERVANCES Sunday: Twenty-seventh Sunday in Ordinary First Reading — The vineyard of the LORD is the Time; Respect Life Sunday house of Israel (Isaiah 5:1-7). Monday: Bl. Francis Xavier Seelos Psalm — The vineyard of the Lord is the house Tuesday: St. Bruno; Bl. Marie Rose Durocher of Israel (Psalm 80). Wednesday: Our Lady of the Rosary Second Reading — God’s peace will guard your hearts Friday: St. Denis and Companions; St. John and minds (Philippians 4:6-9). Leonardi Gospel — The kingdom of God will be given Saturday: Blessed Virgin Mary to those who will produce its fruit THE GIFT OF THE REIGN OF GOD (Matthew 21:33-43). Matthew’s Gospel today expands on Isaiah’s ballad The English translation of the Psalm Responses from the Lectionary for Mass © 1969, 1981, considerably. Gospel clearly shows us that here the author is busy teaching this community of Jewish Christians: “This is a story about Israel a long time ago; this is also a story about Jesus and the skeptical READINGS FOR THE WEEK leaders.” Monday: Gal 1:6-12; Ps 111:1b-2, 7-9, 10c; Jesus as much as told these Jewish leaders that they were the Lk 10:25-37 tenants who first stoned their own prophets. And he told the Tuesday: Gal 1:13-24; Ps 139:1b-3, 13-15; leaders they were the tenants who would soon even dispose Lk 10:38-42 of him—Jesus—and, in doing so, would forfeit their privileged place of presenting to the world the promised Messiah. Wednesday: Gal 2:1-2, 7-14; Ps 117:1bc, 2; “And this,” says Matthew’s Gospel, “is a story about you, Lk 11:1-4 the inheritors of what was first offered to Israel.” The reign Thursday: Gal 3:1-5; Lk 1:69-75; Lk 11:5-13 of God was first opened to Israel and is now given to the Friday: Gal 3:7-14; Ps 111:1b-6; Lk 11:15-26 whole world, but it must be received as a gift. The first Saturday: Gal 3:22-29; Ps 105:2-7; Lk 11:27-28 Christians are the new tenants in the vineyard. The deeper reality of the reign or kingdom of God is that it is available Sunday: Is 25:6-10a; Ps 23:1-6; Phil 4:12-14, to everyone on the face of the earth—Israel included. 19-20; Mt 22:1-14 [1-10] Copyright (c) J. As Kevin Pease taught this summer in the Holy Spirit class, “Without Jesus’ humanness, we cannot know God’s divinity.” We are given a wonderful and personal invitation from Jesus into a relationship with His Father.
