Tax Receipts can be provided. Bible Bits September 29, 2019 Trust is a big thing with God. He uses words like “faith” and “believe” in describing it. Trust is confident assurance. It’s the means by which God spoke existence into existence. The story in this week’s Gospel Reading (Luke 16:1931), about the rich man, who had trusted his wealth during his life, and Lazarus, a poor man whom the man of wealth had failed to help, but who had apparently put his trust in God, tells about Abraham appearing to this rich guy after his death. After the tormented man of means is told this is what he has earned for his treatment of the less fortunate while he was alive, he asks that Lazarus be sent to his “father’s house, for I have five brothers,” and he wants them to be warned about “this place of torment” (v 28). Here’s a Biblical fact (v 31): “If they will not listen to Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded if someone should rise from the dead.” Listening to what God says through Moses and the prophets (and the apostles) involves trusting God.     Lesser Feasts and Fasts 2018 Conforming to General Convention 2018 1 Preface Christians have since ancient times honored men and women whose lives represent heroic commitment to Christ and who have borne witness to their faith even at the cost of their lives. Such witnesses, by the grace of God, live in every age. The criteria used in the selection of those to be commemorated in the Episcopal Church are set out below and represent a growing consensus among provinces of the Anglican Communion also engaged in enriching their calendars. What we celebrate in the lives of the saints is the presence of Christ expressing itself in and through particular lives lived in the midst of specific historical circumstances. In the saints we are not dealing primarily with absolutes of perfection but human lives, in all their diversity, open to the motions of the Holy Spirit. Many a holy life, when carefully examined, will reveal flaws or the bias of a particular moment in history or ecclesial perspective. It should encourage us to realize that the saints, like us, are first and foremost redeemed sinners in whom the risen Christ’s words to St. Paul come to fulfillment, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” The “lesser feasts” provide opportunities for optional observance. They are not intended to replace the fundamental celebration of Sunday and major Holy Days. As the Standing Liturgical Commission and the General Convention add or delete names from the calendar, successive editions of this volume will be published, each edition bearing in the title the date of the General Convention to which it is a response.

    Blessed Francis Xavier Seelos, Priest Memorial

    5 October Blessed Francis Xavier Seelos, Priest Memorial rancis Xavier Seelos was born in FÜssen, Bavaria, on January 11, 1819. He studied philosophy Fat the University of Munich and began theology as a seminarian for the diocesan clergy. After visiting the Redemptorists in Altötting, where he heard of their missionary work in North America, he decided to join them. With their approval, he set off for the United States in 1843 where he made his novitiate. He made his profession in Baltimore in May 1844 and was ordained priest there in December. His first assignment was to St. Philomena’s in Pittsburgh where he served for six years as assistant pastor with (Saint) John Neumann as pastor and superior of the community. He then served as superior of the community for three more years. During this time he was also the novice master. In 1854, he was appointed pastor of St. Alphonsus in Baltimore, and in 1857 pastor of Ss. Peter and Paul in Cumberland as well as prefect of students there and in 1862 in Annapolis, Mary- land. Replaced as prefect of students, he preached missions in German and English throughout the Northeast and Midwest United States. Father Seelos was always an active and highly successful missioner — particularly devoted to the confessional — and was revered as an exceptional confessor and spiritual director. After a year as assistant pastor in St. Mary’s in Detroit, in 1866 he was assigned to the parish of the Assumption in New Orleans, Louisiana as pastor. There he made a great effort to care for the poor, sick, and neglected.

This event is one of the “shallow entry points” of which I spoke a few weeks ago. Our work of evangelization might not begin with inviting someone to church on the weekend, but rather with encountering Catholics at less formal and intimidating gatherings. When we invite, then we are on the path to accompany someone on their spiritual journey. When they encounter our St Cyprian community, they are likely to want more! PPC The Parish Pastoral Council has two open seats for our 2018-19 meetings. We need one general member for the PPC and a new Downriver Vicariate Pastoral Council representative who also sits on our PPC.
