INTRODUCTION “Own only what you can carry with you; know languages, know countries, know people. Let your memory be your travel bag.” Aleksandr I. Solzhenitsyn

Dear reader,

You are holding a special book in your hand that may open you the door to unforgettable experiences. Please, do not mistake it for one of those high gloss travel catalogues you page through before booking an all inclusive holiday. The Summer University is so much more than that; and I do sincerely hope this year you will discover the secret of one of the most fascinating projects of AEGEE. Once you lived it, you will never want to miss it again.

You have the choice to experience countries and places far be- yond the typical tourism hot spots. You have the choice between such diverse topics like language, history, photography, music, sports, travel - but always under the premise of multiculturalism. You have the choice to spend 2-4 weeks with people from more than 20 (European) countries offering you the unique chance to discover the life and fascination of one or more nations by taking the perspective of its inhabitants. You do not come as a tourist but as a friend.

Do take your time when reading this booklet and making your choice. It’s an offer you shouldn’t miss and that should be used wisely. Cause at the end, it’s all about overcoming borders, ma- king new experiences and friends for a lifetime.

Many years later you will still look back at those incredible mo- ments you spent during your youth: the time you learned the great language of a minority; when you spent a day out with people from , Finland, Azerbaijan, Cyprus, and more as if it was the most usual; when you learned about the daily life of your Dutch friend while listening to Hungarian songs and drin- king Estonian liqueur. Take this booklet and make the first step to one of the greatest memories of your life. Let it be the first item to put into your travel bag and let the journey begin in your mind.

Regards, Kamala Schütze

12 HUMAN RESOURCES Working Group

Due to the fact that AEGEE members are changing constantly, experience and knowledge transfer between “new” and “old” members is essential for ensuring the continuity and the success of our organisation. In this framework, the Academy, together with other AEGEE bodies, tries to contribute to the improvement of the AEGEE Human Resources. Our aim is to provide AEGEE members with the tools and the knowledge to develop the pro- jects and challenges they believe in, in order to reach the main goals of our association. In co-operation with external and internal bodies we organise diverse and high-level training events and promote the participation of our members in external trainings. Academy is providing the Network with training materials and other facilities, such as: the LTC package and other Internal Edu- cation documents, the Trainers database, the HR database. Re- garding SUs, AEGEE – Academy is organising in co-operation with SU Coordination Team a Summer University Project School once per year. This is the event aimed at training the people that will be contributing in making the SU Project better in the next years. The SUPS is a one week training intended for people in- terested in Summer University Project that aims in giving tools for participants for organizing a content-full and interesting Sum- mer University. 13 ENVIRON- MENTAL Working Group

Environment and nature affects us all whether we like it or not through weather, food chains, water, energy, wildlife and so on. But being responsible and caring about the things around us doe- sn’t mean that we have to be hard-core „green” people, always telling people what to do or not to do, it can be also part of fun activities, summer adventures and discovering new places and cultures. Just like last year, also in 2009 you can find some Sum- mer University with green theme, either offering you some wor- kshop, trips connected to environment and nature, or trying to organise the SU in more environmental friendly way. AEGEE lo- cals organising Green SU don’t only just offer you cultural ex- change and summer fun, but also try to take some responsibility towards our environment and our own future, these things can be combined! Have a look into this booklet and find out how dif- ferent locals have taken up this challenge, maybe you will be at- tending the SU that will be rewarded with the Greenest SU Award in Autumn Agora 2009. But remember, that you as SU partici- pants yourself can make your SU’s a bit more environmental friendly, being an example for the rest of the participants, act with respect towards local traditions and nature, try to learn something from the places you visit, buy products made by small local pro- ducers, try to find more environmental friendly ways of travelling (train, boat, bus), try to produce less garbage and don’t throw it into nature.

Even outside of the history of the Roman Empire, Rome has a significant place in the story of Christianity up to the present day, for it endures as the home of the papacy. The worldwide Roman Catholic Church is ad- ministered from the Vatican City, run by the Holy See as an independent enclave and the world's smallest sovereign state.

Today the coat of arms of Albano still sport the white (Latin: Alba) boar dreamt by Ascanius before the foun- ding of the city. Alba Longa was one of the main cities of the Latins and, again according to the legend, the birthplace of Romulus and Remus, the mythical founders of Rome.

Cagliari: (Sardinian: Casteddu) is the capital of the island of Sardinia. Cagliari's Sardinian name Casteddu literally means the castle that lies on top of a hill, with a wonderful view of the Gulf of Cagliari (also known as Angels Gulf). Most of the old city walls are intact, and feature the two 13th cen- tury white lime-stone towers, St. Pancras Tower and the Elephant Tower.

Carbonia: Is a town in the province of Carbonia-Iglesias, Sardinia. It was officially inaugurated on the 18 December 1938. Turku: The oldest city and the former capital of Finland founded in 1229. It is the fifth largest city in Finland with 174 000 inhabitants. River Aura gives the city a special character: on warm summer nights its riverbanks and boats are buzzing with life. Turku is surrounded by archipelago of nearly 20 000 islands and rocky islets. Because of their vulnerable nature these islands are protected by UNESCO.

Helsinki: The capital of Finland was founded in 1550 on the shore of the Baltic Sea. The Helsinki Metropolitan Area is home to one million people. Hel- sinki is Finland's international gateway and it is a mixture of eastern and western cultures. Many of Helsinki's main attractions are related to the sea, including the Suomenlinna fortress (a UNESCO World Heritage site).

Naantali: The holiday town that you will fall in love with at first sight – and over and over again. Naantali was founded in 1443 and it has just over 18 000 inhabitants. The town's atmosphere is a mixture of the charm of the archipelago, the diversity of history and the idyllic present day.

Tallinn: Today Tallinn's medieval Old Town is under UNESCO World Heritage. Tallinn is controversial: on one hand you have candlelit medieval restau- rants and merchant houses in the old town, beautiful tree-lined parks and the slapping waves of the Baltic Sea. On the other hand there is the city that has been recognised for its forward thinking, state-of-the- art services and thriving nightlife.

Pärnu: The best known Estonian resort as well as a Hanseatic city, a harbour city and a university city. However, the sleepy rhythm of Pärnu changes completely when the flag of the Estonian summer capital starts flying high on the summer equinox. Then you can experience beach life, do- zens of festivals, night clubs and a huge party crowd. So what are you waiting for – join us!

Once, after he had heard that the wines made in ªirince were so delicious, he went to taste those wines that in time would give him an inspiration in coming up with his world-view. Then, on the way he was coming back to Izmir, he stopped by in Ephesus to see the Temple of Artemis, which is one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Suddenly, he realized that traveling all the wonders of the World had to be his world-view and decided to go to Mausoleum of Maussollos in Bo- drum. Afterwards, while he was visiting Mausoleum, the Aegean Sea charmed him, thus he decided to explore the islands of Aegean and spe- cially the graphic small island of Symi. There, an adorable Rhodian girl named Izmira, ecstasized him and fell in sudden love at first sight. That was the moment that his world-view took a shape. Consequently, Rodi and Izmira lived till the end of their lifes in a small house in the old town near by Colossus of Rhodes by swimming all day, dancing, enjoying the wine and food and amusing their life and LOVE.

About 20 years ago s.th. extraordinary happened in Germany. The Berlin Wall which separated the German people for many years came down and a new age began. They were traveling to parts of Ger- many that they only knew from books and TV. They were discovering a new world; The Eastern Germans could buy bananas; The Western Ger- mans could enjoy their first proper version of “Sandmännchen”. But now, almost 20 years later, people have found out that reunification also means challenges and problems. There might not be a Wall in Berlin anymore but the Wall remains in some peoples’ minds as they have pre- judices. But is it really true that: Wessis are arrogant? Ossis are self-pi- tying people, wishing back the “good old days”? Or is this just stupid nonsense? Come and find out yourself, but in an ENTERTAINING way!! We don’t want to give you boring history lessons but a good combination of culture and fun! As you might expect from an AEGEE event, there will be lots of time for activities, excursions and parties. Napoleon said ''If the Earth were a single state, Istanbul would be its ca- pital.'' If you think that this is the only reason why we call Istanbul "the capital", you are wrong. Istanbul has been the capital and central point of gigantic civilizations and empires throughout world history. Perhaps you might be curious about the fascinating legacy and culture these have left to Istanbul, of course not without reason being the European Capital of Culture in 2010. Did you know that in Istanbul it is not extraordinary at all to see a Mosque, Catholic Church, Orthodox Church and Synagogue within the same neighbourhood? Or maybe an avenue that stems from the 13th century and which today in average is visited by more than two million people each day might attract your attention? Not to mention that Istanbul is the only city in the world which connects two continents, brid- ging and introducing different cultures and civilizations to each other. These and many more might for you be adequate reasons, for making a city the most populated one in Europe. If you'd ask us, we would not find them sufficient: because you haven't yet mentioned the view of the Bo- sphorus..! Join us this summer and you'll know what we mean!

158 The Capital Resurrects: Road to 2010

Katrin: I would like to express my gratitude to the Network. Especially to the Comitè Directeur and to the old teams who have made the Summer University Project possible already for more than two decades.

Dea: Like many others did before me, I am very happy and grateful to have been part of the SUCT. All of you have made the Summer University Project so successful! I would like to take the opportu- nity to thank Bojan, Dario, Katrin and Percin for the unforgettable experience we shared this year (we survived!). I also would like to thank Antonio Violante for the knowledge he shared with me; Kamala Schuetze for the inspiring introduction to this booklet; Estefania Barrios, Patricia Tejera, Simone Bonechi for their pre- cious support; and especially Mario Giuseppe Varrenti for the Cover and Poster illustration (big thank-you to our 4 ‘photogenic’ hands!). I thank very much my mother and father for understan- ding my passion and commitment to AEGEE in all these years. Last but not least, I thank AEGEE-Roma, AEGEE and all the friends all over Europe.

Dario: I still have in my mind when, some years ago, I attended my first Summer University, and it is one of the best moment of my life- time, 15days of fun, wild nights with people from several countries of Europe. Summer Universities are not a small period to share with a lot of people, the SU’s aquaintances start to last for long time and is really fun to meet them again somewhere and talk about these days lived together.

188 I would like to thank all the people I met in these experiences, and all the SUCT 2009 for giving me the possibility to promote the amazing world of Summer University and increase the AE- GEE’s family. I would like also to thank in a particular way AEGEE Palermo that gave me the possibility to be here writing you these few lines. Thanks a lot for all, wishing to meet you somewhere in Europe.

Bojan: It is now almost three years since I visited my first AEGEE event. It was a Summer University in Eskisehir in 2006. Ever since I was connected to AEGEE in every way, but mostly through the active and positive spirit that makes us meet. The force that is moving us to explore and experience new places ant things is coming from this spirit. It is my honour to be part of this years SUCT and be able to give my share of experience, which will enable all of you to have an unforgettable summer. Thank you to all the orga- nizers of Summer Universities I visited for inspiring me to take this road in AEGEE. I wish you all a fantastic summer and let the spirit reach your hearts!

Percin: Every success that you achieve in life is easier and more mea- ningful if you achieve this success with a group that you believe in and enjoy working with. I had the chance to work with SUCT team this year, on this big and important project of AEGEE, Sum- mer Universities. Working with people knowing and believing in the values of AEGEE made me even more motivated to contri- bute to the SU project. Hence, firstly I would like to thank that SUCT team that is working a lot and dedicating themselves for the success and sustainibility of the SU project. I would also like to thank to my CD colleagues that helped me, whenever I needed their help, without any hesitation. Of course since this project is for AEGEE members, I would like to thank all the AEGEE network and hope that you will learn, enjoy and most importantly, have an amazing experience in the Summer Universities of AEGEE.
