    Downloaded by [University of Wisconsin - Madison] at 05:00 18 January 2017 THE ARCHAEOLOGY OF THE PRUSSIAN CRUSADE The Archaeology of the Prussian Crusade explores the archaeology and material culture of the Crusade against the Prussian tribes in the thirteenth century, and the subsequent society created by the Teutonic Order that lasted into the six- teenth century. It provides the first synthesis of the material culture of a unique crusading society created in the south-eastern Baltic region over the course of the thirteenth century. It encompasses the full range of archaeological data, from standing buildings through to artefacts and ecofacts, integrated with writ- ten and artistic sources. The work is sub-divided into broadly chronological themes, beginning with a historical outline, exploring the settlements, castles, towns and landscapes of the Teutonic Order’s theocratic state and concluding with the role of the reconstructed and ruined monuments of medieval Prussia in the modern world in the context of modern Polish culture. This is the first work on the archaeology of medieval Prussia in any lan- guage, and is intended as a comprehensive introduction to a period and area of growing interest. This book represents an important contribution to promot- ing international awareness of the cultural heritage of the Baltic region, which has been rapidly increasing over the last few decades.     n the Grunwald fi elds thousands of soldiers stand opposite each other. Hidden below the protec- tive shield of their armour, under AN INVITATION Obanners waving in the wind, they hold for an excursion along long lances. Horses impatiently tear their bridles and rattle their hooves. Soon the the Grunwald Trail iron regiments will pounce at each other, to clash in a deadly battle And so it hap- pens every year, at the same site knights from almost the whole of Europe meet, reconstructing events which happened over six hundred years ago. It is here, on the fi elds between Grunwald, Stębark and Łodwigowo, where one of the biggest battles of Medieval Europe took place on July . The Polish and Lithuanian- Russian army, led by king Władysław Jagiełło, crushed the forces of the Teutonic Knights. On the battlefi eld, knights of the order were killed, together with their chief – the great Master Ulrich von Jungingen. The Battle of Grunwald, a triumph of Polish and Lithuanian weapons, had become the symbol of power of the common monarchy. When fortune abandoned Poland and the country was torn apart by the invaders, reminiscence of the battle became the inspiration for generations remembering the past glory and the fi ght for national independence. Even now this date is known to almost every Pole, and the annual re- enactment of the battle enjoys great popularity and attracts thousands of spectators. In Stębark not only the museum and the battlefi eld are worth visiting but it is also worthwhile heading towards other places related to the great battle with the Teutonic Knights order.

    Schlesien zählte in den Nachkriegsjahrzehnten zu jenen Themen, die weitgehend den Vertriebenenverbänden überlassen wurden. Als eine Geburtsstätte des Widerstands gegen das Kapital blieb Schlesien bestenfalls durch den Aufstand der schlesischen Weber Texte 1844 in einer breiteren Öffentlichkeit präsent – vor allem über Heines und Hauptmanns Werke. Als ein Ort antisemitischer Verfolgungen, aber auch als ein wichtiges Zentrum des Widerstands gegen die Nazidiktatur ist Schlesien hingegen fast vollständig vergessen. Hier werden die aus Breslau stammenden, rassistisch und poli- tisch Verfolgten Fred und Martin Löwenberg sowie ihre Familie und Mitkämpfer dem Vergessen entrissen. Quellenmaterial und viele Details über die antifaschistische Arbeit, über Heimatverlust und die neue Zugehörigkeit Schlesiens zu Polen fließen ein. Erstmals wird auch ein Täterprofil des gefürchteten Gestapo-Beamten Josef Kluske aus Breslau erstellt, dessen Prozess in der Bundesrepublik während des Kalten Krieges eingestellt wurde. Tymczasem w badaniach nadal pomija i przemilcza się nie mal półwiecze jej historii, tj. drugi okres powojenny. Nie podejmuje się nawet próby syntetycznego bilansu i rozpoznania obszarów i zagadnień badawczych. Nie da się tego wytłumaczyć niedostatkami źródłowymi i brakiem odpowiedniego dystansu- historycznego bądź nikłym stanem badań analitycznych i cząstkowych, ponieważ w odniesieniu np. do pierwszych lat powojennych czy też aktywności ideowopoli- tycznej emigracji polskiej oraz opozycji antykomunistycznej w kraju wcale nie jest taki skromny. Nikłe zainteresowanie dziejami tej myśli okresu Polski Ludowej ujaw- nia wszystkie słabości współczesnej historiografii polskiej, nad którą niestety ciążą dążenia polityczne do zatarcia w świadomości społecznej pamięci o czasach realne go socjalizmu i umacniania stereotypu epoki zniewolenia i hańby narodowej. - Nadal bowiem częściej rozważa się kwestię, czy należy w ogóle pisać historię Polski Ludowej, zamiast inicjować dyskusje naukowe nad tym, jak należy ową histo- rię pisać. Oczywiście, nawet gdy się podejmuje próby debaty historiograficznej, to w swych założeniach ma ona dowieść i ukazać potrzebę rekonstrukcji negatywne go obrazu Polski Ludowej.
