1 The Siege of Fort Beauséjour by Chris M. Hand Notes Early Conflict in Nova Scotia 1604-1749. By the end of the 1600’s the area was decidedly French. 1713 Treaty of Utrecht After nearly 25 years of continuous war, France ceded Acadia to Britain. French and English disagreed over what actually made up Acadia. The British claimed all of Acadia, the current province of New Brunswick and parts of the current state of Maine. The French conceded Nova Scotia proper but refused to concede what is now New Brunswick and northern Maine, as well as modern Prince Edward Island and Cape Breton. They also chose to limit British ownership along the Chignecto Isthmus and also harboured ambitions to win back the peninsula and most of the Acadian settlers who, after 1713, became subjects of the British Crown. The defacto frontier lay along the Chignecto Isthmus which separates the Bay of Fundy from the Northumberland Strait on the north. Without the Isthmus and the river system to the west, France’s greatest colony along the St. Lawrence River would be completely cut off from November to April. Chignecto was the halfway house between Quebec and Louisbourg. 1721 Paul Mascarene, British governor of Nova Scotia, suggested that a small fort could be built on the neck with a garrison of 150 men. a) one atthe ridge of land at the Acadian town of Beaubassin (now Fort Lawrence) or b) one more west on the more prominent Beauséjour ridge. This never happened because British were busy fighting Mi’kmaq who were incited and abetted by the French. -

Rupert's Land and North-Western Territory Order (Order of Her Majesty in Council Admitting Rupert's Land and the North-Western Territory into the Union) At the Court at Windsor, the 23rd day of June, 1870 PRESENT, The Queen's Most Excellent Majesty Lord President Lord Privy Seal Lord Chamberlain Mr. Gladstone Whereas by the "Constitution Act, 1867," it was (amongst other things) enacted that it should be lawful for the Queen, by and with the advice or Her Majesty's Most Honourable Privy Council, on Address from the Houses of the Parliament of Canada, to admit Rupert's Land and the North- Western Territory, or either of them, into the Union on such terms and conditions in each case as should be in the Addresses expressed, and as the Queen should think fit to approve, subject to the provisions of the said Act. And it was further enacted that the provisions of any Order in Council in that behalf should have effect as if they had been enacted by the Parliament of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland: And whereas by an Address from the Houses of the Parliament of Canada, of which Address a copy is contained in the Schedule to this Order annexed, marked A, Her Majesty was prayed, by and with the advice of Her Most Honourable Privy Council, to unite Rupert's Land and the NorthWestern Territory with the Dominion of Canada, and to grant to the Parliament of Canada authority to legislate for their future welfare and good government upon the terms and conditions therein stated. -

Scaling Memory: Reparation Displacement and the Case of BC MATT JAMES University of Victoria In British Columbia, people tend to view history as something that happened last weekend.... Happily, it doesn’t matter here who your ancestors were or who did what to whom 300 years ago. Lisa Hobbs Birnie ~1996! Racist injustices have played a central role in shaping British Columbia; it could hardly be otherwise in a white-dominated settler society built on an ongoing history of Indigenous dispossession and 75 initial years of official racism against Asians. Yet despite the spread of an “age of apol- ogy” ~Gibney et al., 2008!, characterized in many locales by a growing introspection over patterns of historic injustice, considerations of repara- tion still seem marginal in BC, an anomaly to which this article responds. Charting the contours of an amnesiac culture of memory, the follow- ing pages argue that BC’s aloofness from the age of apology reflects a phenomenon I call “reparation displacement.” While some recalcitrant communities resist calls to repair injustice by denying responsibility or claiming no injustice has occurred, reparation displacement works more subtly, redirecting understandings of responsibility instead. In the BC case, reparation displacement is intertwined with the politics of federalism; issues of racist injustice in BC have been conceived almost exclusively— not only by officials but often by redress activists themselves—as mat- ters of federal rather than provincial shame. JEAN Acadians Move to Louisiana In 1652, Michel Richard, a native of the province of Saintonge, France,5 arrived in Acadie as a soldier with an expedition sponsored by Emmanuel LeBorgne. LeBorgne was a speculator and a very rich merchant in France who had invested heavily in the Acadian business enterprises of Charles de Menou d'Aulnay (1604–1650). D’Aulnay had been involved in what has ingloriously been called the “Acadian Civil War.” It seems that King Louis XIV approved overlapping land grants to an entrepreneur named Charles de Saint-Étienne de la Tour and d'Aulnay. Their business differences were exacerbated by deep personal and religious hatred (de la Tour was Protestant and d’Aulnay was Catholic). The most vicious fighting took place from about 1640-45 and did not end until d'Aulnay successfully expelled la Tour from his claims. La Tour fled to Quebec. The matter got even more complicated in 1650 when d’Aulnay died by accidental drowning and LeBorgne laid formal claim to the estate. -

Tea and Bannock Stories is a grass-roots, multi-generational, multi-national gathering of poets and artists. Together we have learned from and informed one another. Our final result is this compilation of poems and images presented in a community event on Mother Earth Day, April 21, 2007, at the Vancouver Aboriginal Friendship Center amidst family, friends, songs, dances, art, poetry, tea, and bannock. Indigenous Peoples/First Nations Fact Sheet For the Poor Peoples Campaign “Who will find peace with the lands? The future of humankind lies waiting for those who will come to understand their lives and take up their responsibilities to all living things. Who will listen to the trees, the animals and birds, the voices of the places of the land? As the long forgotten peoples of the respective continents rise and begin to reclaim their ancient heritage, they will discover the meaning of the lands of their ancestors. That is when the invaders of North American continent will finally discover that for this land, God is red”. Vine Deloria Jr., God Is Red Indigenous Peoples and their respective First Nations are not only place-based peoples relationally connected to their traditional homelands, but have their own distinctive cultures, traditions, and pre-colonial and colonial histories since European contact.1 The World Bank 2020 Report states the global Indigenous population is 476 million people, or 6% of the world’s population, live in over 90 countries, and through the cultural practices of traditional ecological knowledge, protect about 80% of the world’s remaining biodiversity2. Within the United States (U.S.), Native Americans/American Indians/Alaska Natives/Native Hawaiians comprise about 2% of the entire United States population. There are, indeed, more than 6.9 million Native Americans and Alaska Natives3, and in 2019, there were 1.9 million Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders4. Within the U.S., there are 574 federally recognized Indian nations, 62 state-recognized Indian nations5, and hundreds of non-federally and non-state recognized Native American nations6. -

AN UNFAMILIAR ESSAY BY FREDERICK J.TURNER Quite early In his professional career Professor Turner evinced an Interest in immigration problems, historically considered, as a particular aspect of his central interest — the study of the territorial advance of the American popula tion. In the course of a review of Roosevelt's Winning of the West, In 1889 Turner wrote: To this valley, also, have come migrations from the Old World such as can be compared only with the great Wandering of the Peoples — the Volkerwanderung — of the Middle Ages. A new composite na tionality is being produced, a distinct American people, speaking the English tongue, but not English.^ Once his period of apprenticeship was completed—It ter minated when Johns Hopkins conferred the doctorate In 1890 — Turner seized the opportunity of planning research projects In this inviting field. As his seminar topic for the college year 1890—91, he selected the study of immigration into Wisconsin.^ Turner's approach to the subject was broad and philosophical. Wisconsin had been rocked by controversies between natives and foreign-born, the latter strongly resenting the enactment of the Bennett Law, which prescribed that all schools in the state should give a portion, of their Instruction In the English language. To the schol ar's mind it was clear that immigration, historically treated, opened the gate to a better understanding between native and foreigner. Toward the close of 1891 Turner published an essay on the "Philosophy of History," in the course of which he took occasion to remark: "^The Dial (Chicago), 10:71 (August, 1889).
