Wines That Put Napa on the Map Up until the mid-1900s, French wines were thought by many to be the best on the planet. The turnaround in wine knowledge began when wine merchant Steve Spurrier organized a Paris Wine Tasting in 1976 as a publicity stunt assuming French wines would easily win. How wrong he was! The nine tasters were all French wine experts. However, for the whites, they matched French Burgundy against US California chardonnays. The winner was Napa Valley 1973 Chateau Montelena. For reds, the 1973 Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon was shockingly the winner over the French wines. Today, you’ll visit both California wineries and find out for yourself why these two wineries were winners and still producing top wines today.
