Book Reviews 423 JASON WISE (Director): SOMM 3. Written by Christina Wise and Jason Wise, Produced by Forgotten Man Films, Distributed by Samuel Goldwyn Films, 2018; 1 h 18 min. This is the third in a trilogy of documentaries about the wine world from Jason Wise. The first—Somm, a marvelous film which I reviewed for this Journal in 2013 (Stavins, 2013)–followed a group of four thirty-something sommeliers as they prepared for the exam that would permit them to join the Court of Master Sommeliers, the pinnacle of the profession, a level achieved by only 200 people glob- ally over half a century. The second in the series—Somm: Into the Bottle—provided an exploration of the many elements that go into producing a bottle of wine. And the third—Somm 3—unites its predecessors by combining information and evocative scenes with a genuine dramatic arc, which may not have you on pins and needles as the first film did, but nevertheless provides what is needed to create a film that should not be missed by oenophiles, and many others for that matter. Before going further, I must take note of some unfortunate, even tragic events that have recently involved the segment of the wine industry—sommeliers—featured in this and the previous films in the series. Five years after the original Somm was released, a cheating scandal rocked the Court of Master Sommeliers, when the results of the tasting portion of the 2018 exam were invalidated because a proctor had disclosed confidential test information the day of the exam. -

AFHE Virtual Wine Tasting: Willamette Valley (OR) vs. Russian River Valley (CA) Hosted by Mike Whitty, AFHE President November 12, 2020 Welcome! • Join Mike Whitty and guest sommelier Ryan Arnold for a delicious comparison of two close rival wine producing regions: o The Willamette Valley of Oregon, and o The Russian River Valley of California. • We will taste 4 different wines, two whites and two reds from each region. • We'll discuss the different qualities of the grape varietals and the different wine terroir for each region. • Attendees are encouraged to purchase their own wine in advance to participate in the tasting. We will be tasting the following wines (all retailing between $17 and $25): Our Four Wines Geography • The Willamette Valley in Oregon (with most production north and west of Salem) is a drive of ten hours or so to the Russian River Valley of Sonoma County, California (with most production in and around Healdsburg or Santa Rosa, and Sebastopol in Sonoma County), mostly along I-5. • Just for perspective, this drive would be about half again as long as the drive from Piedmont, Italy to Beaune, France, which we compared on October 1. Geography Both the Willamette Valley and Russian River Valley benefit from: • Being close to, but not right on, the Pacific Coast • Between the coastal range and the higher inland ranges (Cascades, Sierra Nevada), with passes that bring in cooler Pacific breezes (Van Duzer Corridor, Petaluma Gap) • Volcanic soils o Willamette Valley near Mt. Hood and other Cascade volcanoes o Russian River Valley near the Mayacama range that included volcanoes and pyrocastic flows (Mount Saint Helena is technically not a volcano, though) White Wines (Chardonnay, for today) • The USA, especially the West Coast, produces some excellent white wines in several varieties: Riesling, Pinot Gris, Pinot Grigio, Pinot Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, and of course Chardonnay. -

That May 1976 tasting galvanized an upstart American wine industry that had struggled in the decades since Prohibition and helped overcome a consumer perception here and abroad that American wines were inferior to their French counterparts. The Paris tasting was immortalized in the 2005 book "Judgment of Paris" by George M. Taber and the 2008 movie "Bottle Shock." It has provided a model for countless wine tastings and parties in the decades since, setting the standard that wines should be evaluated based solely on what's in the glass, not on the label. Where California was in the 1970s -- underappreciated for its quality -- Virginia is today. So when we decided to hold our own Judgment of Washington, it wasn't just to see whether the United States would best France today. It was to see whether local wines might surprise the judges now as much as Napa Valley bottles did more than three decades ago. We invited six area wine professionals -- three retailers, three sommeliers -- to blind-taste a dozen chardonnays and a dozen red Bordeaux-style wines, telling them only that we were pitting the United States vs. France in a sort of oenological grudge match. -

The role of the country is comparable at the world level to the role of England in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries in Europe: a hub within the wine-producing economy, with a leading role as taste-maker, with a remarkable effect of construction or transformation of the territories of wine. American cinema tends to reflect this new passion for the wine in the society. The whole point is to understand the discourse it holds, as well as the imaginary which it builds around this drink. Wine has become almost commonplace regarding its appearances on screen, not in what it means. In order to be more democratic, America seeks to get rid of old codes that rule all that surrounds wine. Keywords: Consumption, Film, Globalization, United States of America, Vine, Vineyard, Wine Introduction “I am NOT drinking any fucking Merlot!”: these are the emphatic words pronounced by Miles’s character in the film Sideways. By that sentence, now famous, he contributed to spreading doubts about the organoleptic qualities of merlot grape variety as opposed to pinot noir.
