September 2019 A “Bordeaux wine” is any wine produced in the Bordeaux region (an official Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée) of France, centered on the city of Bordeaux and covering the whole of France’s Gironde Department. This single wine region in France is six times the size of Napa Valley, and with more than 120,000 Ha of vineyards it is larger than all the vineyard regions of Germany combined. It includes over 8,600 growers. Bordeaux is generally viewed as the most prestigious wine-producing area in the world. In fact, many consider Bordeaux the birthplace of modern wine culture. As early as the 13th century, barges docked along the wharves of the Gironde River to pick up wine for transport to England. Bordeaux is the largest producer of high-quality red wines in the world, and average years produce nearly 800 million bottles of wine from ~7000 chateaux, ranging from large quantities of everyday table wine to some of the most expensive and prestigious wines known. (In France, a “chateau” simply refers to the buildings associated with vineyards where the wine making actually takes place; it can be simple or elaborate, and while many are large historic structures they need not be.) About 89% of wine produced in Bordeaux is red (red Bordeaux is often called "Claret" in Great Britain, and occasionally in the U.S.), with sweet white wines (most notably Sauternes), dry whites (usually blending Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon), and also (in much smaller quantities) rosé and sparkling wines (e.g., Crémant de Bordeaux) collectively making up the remainder.

History Château Margaux is a Bordeaux wine estate located in the commune of Margaux on the left bank of the Garonne estuary in the Médoc region. The estate has been occupied since at least the 12th century by a fortified castle known as La Mothe de Margaux and wine under names "Margou" was known in the 15th century. The lineage of ownership was in a relatively direct path from the Lestonnacs, through the female side, including an alliance of marriage with the Pontac family of Château Haut-Brion in 1654, which became crucial to the inclusion of Château Margaux among the four first growths. In 1802 the estate was purchased by the Marquis de la Colonilla. The château was torn down and completely rebuilt. During that time, the estate comprised 265 hectares with a third devoted to viticulture, which is nearly identical to the modern layout. It was sold in 1836 to a Spanish nobleman then sold to Vicomte Pillet-Will in 1879, an era that ended in 1920 with the sale to a syndicate. Large portions of shares in the estate were bought by the Bordeaux wine merchant Fernand Ginestet in 1925.

    Moulin de Tricot Château Moulin de Tricot is a tiny property established in the 19th Century by the ancestors of the current proprietor, Bruno Rey. Monsieur Rey and his wife, Pascale, tend the vineyards that are situated 30 km north of the city of Bordeaux, in the heart of the Mar- gaux appellation. The Rey family owns just shy of 5 ha of vineyards on a gravelly “croupe” (outcropping) in the commune of Arsac. Of the five hectares, 3.7 ha are within the Margaux appellation and 1.2 are classified as Haut-Médoc. The soils at Moulin de Tricot are a mix of sand and gravel sitting on a subsoil of clay and marl. The sandy gravel provides excellent drainage while the clay in the subsoil provides moisture to the vines deep roots. Surrounded by numerous Châteaux producing hedonistic fruit bombs, the wines of the Rey family remind us to the Bordeaux we enjoyed when the Bordelais were modest and their wines grand. Viticulture: • Farming: Lutte Raisonnée • Treatments: No herbicide, synthetic treatments only when necessary • Ploughing: Annual ploughing to maintain vineyard health • Soils: Deep gravel and sand soils • Vines: Trained in Guyot and planted at 9,500 vines/ha.
