RIDING LIGHTS – A DIFFERENT DRUM: Riding Lights return to Leeds on Tuesday this week, 12 February at 7.30 pm (Pancake Day) to present their wonderful play A Different Drum. Inspiring stories of courage and sacrifice (including our own Woodbine Willie) are woven into the story of the plague village of Eyam. The stage is too large for the Minster building so the play takes place at St Peter's Primary School. Tickets (£10) are available from the clergy or directly from Riding Lights.

WOMEN BISHOPS – THE THEOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVES: The Church Times has just released a short paper summarising biblical and theological arguments both for and against women bishops. It is an excellent piece of writing that will help informed debate. Copies are available near the church entrance to read and study.

FOCUS ON:…….. LEADERSHIP AS WE LEAD INTO LENT

There is a whole academic industry around the meaning and theory of leadership. Take your pick: you can be transformational, charismatic, transactional, servant, relational, eco, complex, event-centred and so on…. I can feel a Gilbertian lyric coming on. All of the theories directly or indirectly think about power and authority, and the more recent about how that power is dispersed.

For we Christians the leadership lived by Christ remains remarkable.

God the Father (mega powerful) lets go of power to a humble human who spends most of his life letting go of power. God the Son looks to others to share in the power of his love, and so in turn enable others to discover and exercise such power. God the Holy Spirit accompanies us as we try to exercise that power. And that means that we as ordinary Christians have to exercise leadership.

The mark of real leadership is not to defend what we have but together to create something new. We might call that something new the Kingdom of God, but the term kingdom is redolent of power and hierarchy.

As Lent moves in to view, that is the last thing that we can associate with Jesus.

Simon Robinson
