THE LEEDS TEACHING HOSPITALS NHS TRUST DEPARTMENT OF PAEDRIATRICS JOB DESCRIPTION CONSULTANT PAEDIATRIC ALLERGIST 1. BACKGROUND Leeds Teaching Hospitals is one the largest teaching hospital trusts in Europe, with access to leading clinical expertise and medical technology. OBJECTIVES OF THE POST To maintain a high quality regional paediatric allergy service to Leeds and North, West and East Yorkshire. To contribute to allergen desensitisation and immunotherapy, and drug allergy clinics. To participate in the weekly joint multidisciplinary meetings (and teaching programme) with consultant colleagues. 1 To participate in audit and help develop departmental / network guidelines. To participate in departmental research / develop appropriate research interests that will benefit the clinical service. 3. REQUIREMENTS OF THE POST 3.1 Service Delivery General The Trust expects consultants to deliver clinical service as agreed with commissioners and other stakeholders. This will include: meeting the objectives of the post (see above) continuously improving the quality and efficiency of personal and team practice working with other staff and teams to ensure that the various criteria for service delivery are met, such as o achieving the best clinical outcomes within the resources available o waiting times o infection control standards Consultants in LTHT are line managed by their specialty Lead Clinician working in conjunction with a Business Manager. This specialty team is then managed alongside a number of other specialties in a Clinical Service (or Support) Unit (CSU) led by a Clinical Director as the responsible person and supported by a full time General Manager and a full time Head of Nursing. The Clinical Director and their team report operationally to the Chief Operating Officer (COO). The Clinical Director will work closely with the Chief Operating Officer’s team which includes the Medical Director for Operations, Nurse Director for Operations, Director of Operations, Assistant Directors of Operations (ADOs) and a Performance Team, with each ADO aligned to specific CSUs. Professionally, consultants report to Dr Phil Wood, Chief Medical Officer and Mr David Berridge, Deputy Chief Medical Officer / Medical Director (Operations). All of Leeds tertiary paediatric services are a part of Leeds Children’s Hospital, which is located within Leeds General Infirmary in Leeds city centre. Work is under way to build a brand new home for Leeds Children’s Hospital over the next 5 years. Leeds Children’s Hospital is one of the largest specialist facilities for children in the UK and offers regional and supra-regional expertise. This newly created post represents a major development in the provision of paediatric allergy services to the children in the Yorkshire region. It is a full time clinical appointment based at Leeds Children's Hospital. The clinical duties will focus on providing secondary and tertiary allergy services in clinics and the day care setting. There is no immunology, infectious diseases, general paediatric or on call commitment with this post. Applications are invited from candidates with training and experience in paediatric allergy medicine and within 6 months of obtaining their CCT in paediatrics. This post has been provided to meet the increasing demands for allergy services both in terms of new referrals and on-going follow up, as well as the need to further develop tertiary allergy services further. As such we are looking for an enthusiastic individual with expertise in single/multi system allergy along with experience in managing children with unusual/severe allergy. The post holder will join Dr Donald Hodge and Dr Aida Semic-Jusufagic who provide paediatric allergy services at Leeds Children’s Hospital. We currently provide a secondary and tertiary allergy service to children of Leeds and Yorkshire along with increased referrals from further afield. It is hoped that the new post holder will contribute to developing the tertiary allergy service further. 2 The service support children with both IgE and non-IgE mediated food allergy, allergic asthma, allergic rhinitis, atopic dermatitis, drug allergy (including anaesthetic agents), venom allergy, chronic spontaneous urticaria and complex multisystem allergic disease. The service provides skin prick testing, intradermal testing, oral food challenges, supervised feeds, tree/grass/house dust mite immunotherapy (sublingual and subcutaneous) and treatment with biological for chronic spontaneous urticaria. We currently provide 11 consultant led allergy clinics, 5 speciality doctor led clinics and 4 nurse led clinics per week. There is a wish to develop more formal complex multidisciplinary clinics with respiratory, dermatology, ophthalmology and gastroenterology. The team includes six allergy nurses, all of which run the food challenge programme with two also involved in nurse led allergy clinics. Our excellent dietetic department is staffed by paediatric dieticians trained in allergy and we have 1.5 FTE allergy dieticians and clinical psychologist supporting our allergy service. Oral challenges are run on a day-care facility five days a week. Allergen desensitisation occurs on our day care unit which we would expect this new post to contribute to. We are also closely involved with the Yorkshire and Humber Paediatric Allergy Network. The Yorkshire and Humber Paediatric Allergy Group meet 2-3 times a year with the intention of working towards providing all children across the region with a similar secondary level allergy service. We have a weekly allergy multidisciplinary meeting and monthly clinical governance meeting. Consideration will be given to applicants who wish to work fewer than 10 PAs and those wishing to job share. This consultant post is based at the Leeds Children’s Hospital and the post holder will be employed by the Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust. 3.2 Quality The Trust has a programme of activities that are designed to help consultants improve the quality of the service they offer. This includes a range of activities shown below as examples – not all activities can be undertaken every year! Consultants are expected to routinely engage in relevant activities in their specialty that are focussed on quality improvement. This participation should be reflected at annual appraisal and job planning and will be discussed in specialties as part of clinical governance programmes and meetings.
