Observations of the STECF STECF observes that, according to the terms of reference, the meeting of EWG 16-01 addressed two different tasks: 1. to provide expertise on outstanding issues of the future EU Multi-annual programme; 2. to provide expertise for the preparation of the National Work Plan template. STECF observes that the meeting was organized with a very short notice and the tasks were rather complex to be addressed in only one meeting. However, STECF recognizes that the level of participation was high and covered all the required expertise with the exception of sustainability of aquaculture which, for this reason, was not assessed. EWG 16-01 referred to the DCF workshop on aquaculture (Gydnia, 2015) where the issue of sustainability of aquaculture was discussed. STECF also observes that the legal set up for the future data collection framework is still not completely defined and this increased the time necessary to clarify and address the terms of reference. The revision of the Data Collection Framework (Council regulation (EC) No. 199/2008) is still under negotiation. Therefore, the discussions on EUMAP only reflect the principles reported in the version of the re-cast available at the moment of the meeting. The future EU Multi-annual programme Concerning the preparation of future EU MAP, the EWG 16-01 was required to critically assess if the basic principles of the DCF re-cast and the major recommendations by STECF have been taken into account in the draft EU MAP where deemed necessary. 2 2 STECF notes that the EWG worked on the draft “Commission Decision adopting a multiannual Union programme for the collection, management and use of data in the fisheries and aquaculture sectors”, using the “track changes” mode for proposing amendments and provided explanations and comments on those changes in the report of the meeting. STECF observes that the proposed version of EU MAP has been produced in compliance with the basic principles of the DCF re-cast and the previous STECF recommendations, as it contains several suggestions for including the regionalization approach and for establishing sampling plans according to statistical sound principles. STECF notes that the EWG 16-01 amended the list of definitions by deleting the redundant ones, adding the missing ones and changing some of them. In particular, STECF observe that EWG suggested changing the definition of “fishing days” according to the conclusion of the DCF workshop on transversal variables (Cyprus, February 2016). STECF observes that EWG suggested a roadmap for evaluation and updating the list of mandatory surveys. In line with proposals of previous STECF meetings, as well as RCMs in 2015, and not to disrupt current well-established surveys, the EWG agreed that the EU MAP shall contain a basic list of mandatory internationally coordinated surveys, however, this list shall be evaluated against updated

The chapter presents an overview of the aspects of the environment relating to the surrounding area in which the Jubilee Field Phase 1 development will take place and which may be directly or indirectly affected by the proposed project. This includes the Jubilee Unit Area, the Ghana marine environment at a wider scale and the six districts of the Western Region bordering the marine environment. The Jubilee Unit Area and its regional setting are shown in Figure 4.1. The project area is approximately 132 km west-southwest of the city of Takoradi, 60 km from the nearest shoreline of Ghana, and 75 km from the nearest shoreline of Côte d’Ivoire. Figure 4.1 Project Location and Regional Setting ENVIRONMENTAL RESOURCES MANAGEMENT TULLOW GHANA LIMITED 4-1 The baseline description draws on a number of primary and secondary data sources. Primary data sources include recent hydrographic studies undertaken as part of the exploration well drilling programme in the Jubilee field area, as well as an Environmental Baseline Survey (EBS) which was commissioned by Tullow and undertaken by TDI Brooks (2008). An electronic copy of the EBS is attached to this EIS. It is noted that information on the offshore distribution and ecology of marine mammals, turtles and offshore pelagic fish is more limited due to limited historic research in offshore areas.

Total of 301 specimen of G. niger were collected in Croatian territorial waters. Total length of all analysed specimens ranged from 70 mm to 145 mm, with mean 109.90 ± 15.64 mm. Meristic counts of analyzed black goby were D1: V-VII, D2: I+10-14, A: I+7- 12, P: 10-19, C: 14-23, V: 5. Nellbring Asko Laboratory, Institute of Marine Ecology, University of Stockholm, S-106 91 Stockholm, Sweden ABSTRACT: A quantitative investigation of the demersal fish fauna of a 160 km2 archipelago area in the northern Baltic proper was carried out by SCUBA census technique. Thirty-four stations covering seaweed areas, shallow soft bottoms with seagrass and pond weeds, and deeper, naked soft bottoms down to a depth of 21 m were visited at all seasons. The results are compared with those obtained by traditional gill-net fishing. The dominating species are the gobiids (particularly Pornatoschistus rninutus) which make up 75 % of the total fish fauna but only 8.4 % of the total biomass. Zoarces viviparus, Cottus gobio and Platichtys flesus are common elements, with P. flesus constituting more than half of the biomass. Low abundance of all species except Z. viviparus is found in March-April, gobies having a maximum in September-October and P. flesus in November. Spatially, P. rninutus shows the widest vertical range being about equally distributed between surface and 20 m depth. C. gobio aggregates in the upper 10 m. The Mytilus bottoms and the deeper soft bottoms are the most populated areas. The former is characterized by Gobius niger, Z. viviparus and Pholis gunnellus which use the shelter offered by the numerous boulders and stones. The latter is totally dominated by P.

SUMMARY The use of wild-caught mullet seed for the annual restocking of inland lakes has been known in Egypt for more than eight decades. The importance of wild seed collection increased with recent aquaculture developments. The positive experience with wild seed collection and high seed production costs has prevented the development of commercial mullet hatcheries. Mullet are considered very important aquaculture fish in Egypt with 156 400 tonnes produced in 2005 representing 29 percent of the national aquaculture production. Current legislation prohibits wild seed fisheries except under the direct supervision of the relevant authorities. In 2005, 69.4 million mullet fry were caught for both aquaculture and culture-based fisheries. A parallel illegal fishery exists, undermining proper management of the resources. The effect of wild seed fisheries on the wild stocks of mullet is not well studied. The negative effect of the activity is a matter of debate between fish farming and capture fisheries communities. Data on the capture of wild mullet fisheries shows no observable effect of fry collection on the catch during the last 25 years. Nishimoto5 Introduction Aquaculture-based marine fi sheries enhancements have a long history, dating back to the late 19th century when releasing cultured fry into the marine environment was the principal fi shery management tool. Stocking fi sh eggs and larvae was regarded as the way to save what was generally perceived as a declining resource, the causes of which were not well understood. By the early decades of the 20th century, billions of unmarked, newly-hatched fry had been released into the coastal environments (Radonski and Martin 1986). In the United States, Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua), haddock (Melanogrammus aeglejinus), pollack (Pollachius virens), winter fl ounder (Pseudopleuronectes americanus) and Atlantic mackerel (Scomber scombrus) were stocked (Richards and Edwards 1986). No attempt was made to evaluate stocking strategies and success was measured by numbers released rather than numbers surviving. By the early 1930s, after a half century of releases had produced no evidence of an enhancement impact (except for some salmonid stocking programs), stocking programs were largely curtailed in the US and harvest management was established as the principal means to manage marine fi sheries. In the 1980s, some states in the US began new stock enhancement programs, following advances in marine fi sh culture and fi sh tagging technologies. Most of these new programs were established primarily for research on the effi cacy of marine stock enhancement, with a goal of developing more effective stock enhancement strategies.

The complex data requirements for all three species and physicochemical parameters plus sediment are the basis for a comparative assessment of the population status of mullets in Burgas Bay. An assessment of the local anthropogenic impact was also made using hydrochemical analyses. The present study aims to extend and deepen the knowledge of the population- biological characteristics of three species of mullets (Mugil cephalus, Chelon auratus and Chelon saliens) from Burgas Bay by using an ecosystem scale research to determine the degree of contamination with biogenic substances and their impact on the mullet populations. INTRODUCTION Environmental changes due to anthropogenic factors affect all parts of the plant and animal world in inland waters, seas and oceans. The Black Sea is close to the so-called "red line" beyond which ecosystem degradation processes may become irreversible. Commercial fishing is the most unfavorable factor as it directly destroys a significant part of the populations of certain species, which in terms affects all other species that are in strictly specific relationships with the intensely exploited ones.
