The aim of this study was to investigate if sexual differences could affect external morphology in freshwater shrimp Atya scabra, to determine sexual dimorphism related to morphological differences during the maturation in this species. Thus, morphometric measurements in 360 specimens of A. Scabra were examined at each study site for sexual dimorphism from August 2014 to July 2015. In Aboisso, mean values recorded at lpp, Lantn and Lantl were 8.5 ± 7.8; 78.5 ± 84.1 and 47.5 ± 47.4 mm in males. -

The caridean freshwater shrimp Atya scabra is a common resident of stream systems of tropical rainforests in America, including Brazilian drainages. This shrimp has an amphidromous life cycle, which increases its vulnerability when facing habitat fragmentation. Since information on the reproduction of this species is still limited, we present here data on egg production, egg loss, and energy investment, to achieve a better understanding of reproductive features of A. scabra. Specimens were collected between 2006 and 2007 in São Sebastião Island, southeastern Brazil, in 13 locations. The fecundity of 21 ovigerous females analyzed ranged between 414 and 19,250 eggs, which were higher than previously reported. -

Reproduction and population aspects of the freshwater shrimp Atya scabra in the Santana River, city of Ilhéus, state of Bahia, Brazil, were studied from Apr. 2004 to May 2005. During these 14 mo, 3752 individuals were captured, with a sex ratio of 1.01 males for each female. The total number of individuals caught per month ranged 80-532. Males were generally larger than females. The smallest female found (5.40 mm in carapace length and 29.03 mm in total length) was ovigerous, which indicates that only adult individuals were caught. Ovigerous females were found every month, which indicates continuous reproduction and a high index of reproductive activity during the year. FRYER That the fauna of Europe in general, and of Britain in particular, gives a very imperfect idea of the importance of several groups of freshwater animals is perhaps insufficiently appreciated by European workers. An excellent example of such faunal poverty is provided by the decapod crustaceans - the group that includes crabs, crayfishes and prawns. Of this group there is only one truly native British species, the common crayfish (Austropotamobius pallipes). In warmer regions, and especially in the tropics, the situation is often different. Here prawns and crabs are some- times important constituents of the freshwater fauna. In few places can this be more clearly seen than in the West Indian island of Dominica. Here, where a copious rainfall is reflected by much rich forest and many perennial streams, the number of species of prawns greatly outnumbers that of fishes, which they replace as the dominant large animals of flowing water. The streams also harbour aquatic and semi-aquatic crabs thus emphasizing crustacean dominance. Of the prawns six species belong to the family Atyidae (Fig. 1) and five to the Palaemonidae. It is the former family that concerns us here. Atyids, which students of the Crustacea regard as primitive prawns, have a circumtropical distribution but additionally some have penetrated PLATE 3 Atya innocous advancing over a stone and collecting food by sweeping as it does into temperate regions, sometimes in surface waters, sometimes as so.
