INFORMATION TO USERS This dissertation was produced from a microfilm copy of the original document. While the most advanced technological means to photograph and reproduce this document have been used, the quality is heavily dependent upon the quality of the original submitted. The following explanation of techniques is provided to help you understand markings or patterns which may appear on this reproduction. 1. The sign or "target" for pages apparently lacking from the document photographed is "Missing Page(s)". If it was possible to obtain the missing page(s) or section, they are spliced into the film along with adjacent pages. This may have necessitated cutting thru an image and duplicating adjacent pages to insure you complete continuity. 2. When an image on the film is obliterated with a large round black mark, it is an indication that the photographer suspected that the copy may have moved during exposure and thus cause a blurred image. You will find a good image of the page in the adjacent frame. 3. When a map, drawing or chart, etc., was part of the material being photographed the photographer followed a definite method in "sectioning" the material. It is customary to begin photoing at the upper left hand corner of a large sheet and to continue photoing from left to right in equal sections with a small overlap. If necessary, sectioning is continued again — beginning below the first row and continuing on until complete. 4. The majority of users indicate that the textual content is of greatest value, however, a somewhat higher quality reproduction could be made from "photographs" if essential to the understanding of the dissertation.

  • Will Rogers: Native American Cowboy, Philosopher, and Presidential
UNIVERSIDAD DE CUENCA Escuela de Lengua y Literatura Inglesa ABSTRACT This senior thesis, “Will Rogers: Native American Cowboy, Philosopher, and Presidential Advisor,” presents the story of Will Rogers, indicating especially the different facets of his life that contributed to his becoming a legend and a tribute to the American culture. Will Rogers is known mostly as one of the greatest American humorist of his time and, in fact, of all times. This work focuses on the specific events and experiences that drove him to break into show business, Hollywood, and the Press. It also focuses on the philosophy of Will Rogers as well as his best known sayings and oft-repeated quotations. His philosophy, his wit, and his mirth made him an important and influential part of everyday life in the society of the United States in his day and for years thereafter. This project is presented in four parts. First, I discuss Rogers’ childhood and his life as a child-cowboy. Second, I detail how he became a show business star and a popular actor. Third, I recall his famous quotations and one-liners that are well known nowadays. Finally, there is a complete description of the honors and tributes that he received, and the places that bear Will Rogers name. Reading, writing, and talking about Will Rogers, the author of the phrase “I never met a man I didn’t like,” is to tell about a life-story of “completeness and self-revelation,” because he was a great spirit, a great writer, and a great human being. CONTENTS TABLE CHAPTER I: Biography of Will Rogers……………………………............

  • Sonya Levien
Sonya Levien Also Known As: Sonya Hovey, Sonya Opesken Lived: December 25, 1888 - March 19, 1960 Worked as: adapter, co-screenwriter, continuity, scenario editor, screenwriter, writer Worked In: United States by Patricia Brett Erens From a poverty stricken immigrant to one of Hollywood’s highest paid screenwriters, Levien’s life exemplifies the opportunities available to some women during the silent era of filmmaking. Born Sonya Opesken in 1888 in Panimunik, a small Jewish village within the Russian Empire, she emigrated with her family to the Lower East Side of New York, where her father had taken the name of Levien. Sonya grew up in a politically leftist household, which informed her early life, but which seems to have had little lasting influence on her screenwriting. However, the experience of poverty never totally left her; she wrote in an article published in 1918 in the Metropolitan: “A feather-duster factory swallowed up my teens at four dollars a week… If I would live I must escape from the East Side. If my body did not die, my mind and spirit would” (8). According to her biographer, Levien dropped out of high school to help support the family. However, later, in 1906, she attended New York University Law School, graduating in 1909. Realizing that law was not her métier (she claimed she would not make a good lawyer because she was too sympathetic and her emotions were too near the surface), she held several secretarial jobs, especially in the magazine publishing business and then began to write her own stories. This period, the early teens, was especially open to young professional women with talent.

  • Will Rogers Receives Museum Tribute; Permanent Collection Acquires His Films
NO. 70 The Museum of Modern Art FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 11 West 53 Street, New York, N.Y. 10019 Tel. 956-6100 Cable: Modemart WILL ROGERS RECEIVES MUSEUM TRIBUTE; PERMANENT COLLECTION ACQUIRES HIS FILMS American folk hero, humorist and political satirist Will Rogers, whose barbed wit and talent for repartee and rope twirling were immortalized on film, will be posthumously feted from May 18 through June 7 at The Museum of Modern Art. The occasion of this tribute is a gift from The Will Rogers Memorial in Claremore, Oklahoma of the collection of Will Rogers films to the Museum' s Department of Film, to be added to the permanent archive so they can be preserved for future generations. Covering the years from 1919 to 1935, the program of Will Rogers films include "The Connecticut Yankee" (1931), directed by David Butler, "State Fair" (1933), directed by Henry King, "David Harum" (1934), directed by James Cruze, and "Steamboat 'Round the Bend" (1935), directed by John Ford. It has, in addition, "The Ropin' Fool" (1922), which was produced by Rogers himself. The phenomenal success of Will Rogers and his acerbic wit dates back to the Depression Era when "a homely man in his fifties outreached the most glamorous and beautiful movie stars in popularity, " according to Eileen Bowser, Associate Curator in charge of the Museum' s Film Archives. In a program note accompanying the series, Mrs. Bowser recalls that Rogers was a vaudeville star, a newspaper columnist, a lecturer, and a radio personality. "He had become an American institution." Characterized as a homespun philosopher, Rogers, whose "put downs" of pomposity and sham are still quoted today, developed his own style of free-wheeling verbiage to accompany his lasso slinging act in the Broadway "Follies." The ex- cowboy /adventurer, who was born in Oklahoma and was part Indian, had been a soldier in the Boer War, and later toured the country in Wild West shows before becoming a professional entertainer.
