The countdown for IGGNITE 2017 has truly begun as hundreds of IGG members turned up for CONNECT Family Fun Day in Rockwell College on 21 August 2016. IGG Leaders and Guides enjoyed the opportunity to explore the site where they will be camping with their Guides for a week next summer.

>>> IGG at Claire Byrne Live on RTÉ From the Chief Commissioner

Dear Fellow Leader,

Do you like the vibrancy of the new full colour Trefoil News? I love it because that’s exactly what we are – a vibrant organisation full of life and technicolour! I was delighted to see the bright uniforms of our girls shining out from the pages in Autumn’s edition of our trusty Trefoil News. And we hope that the colour enables you to show the magazine to the parents of girls featured and make them proud of the organisation their daughter belongs to. Many thanks to all who contributed and to those involved in bringing this new version to fruition.

This autumn you will have received a number of resources:

• Firstly, the new Leading the Way which replaces the Welcome to Guiding publication. This has been expanded to include more information on qualifications and unit management. Míle buíochas to Jenny Gannon, Evelyn Hayes and Linda Peters for working with me on this resource. We hope it will entice you to travel along your leadership journey in IGG.

• Secondly, the new look Code of Ethics and Good Practice which has been reprinted due to the changes in Garda Vetting and enclosed with Trefoil News. Many thanks to Lisa Challoner for her work in keeping this important document up to date.

• You will also receive materials to enable your Unit to join in our first National Good Turn Week. I am delighted that this initiaitive is happening and even more excited that every member in the country can take part helping to showcase our Guiding ethos.

• And finally, your Unit Contact Person (UCP) will receive a copy of the Surf Smart resource produced by WAGGGS and Symantec. We are grateful to Symantec Ireland for printing this useful booklet. I encourage you to read the book – I learned a lot from it for my own personal use and for my work in Guiding. And WAGGGS has produced a badge for all Units who complete the relevant activities! Check out wagggs.org for more details or to download further copies.

Often we don’t realise the skills we gain for ourselves in Guiding and we don’t promote the benefits of volunteering enough. Check out IGG’s new video on YouTube which shows how Guide Skills = Life Skills and see how all your volunteering can add to your skills, CVs and employability (https://youtu.be/OKrXSt_AxvU).

It’s been a busy Guiding year so far and I would like to thank all those involved in the seven Regional Conferences. To all who arranged the various strands of their life so that they could attend and become more knowledgeable; to those who planned and organised high quality training sessions; to the behind-the-scenes people who ensured the events were a success for close on 1,000 leaders; I thank you on behalf of Irish Girl Guides.

It feels much too early to send Christmas greetings, so instead I will send you all wishes for continued health and happiness, and the energy to fulfil your Guiding commitments. In 2017, let’s make sure everyone knows we are a vibrant fun-loving movement of girls and women!

Yours in Guiding,

Helen Concannon [email protected]

She has been involved in Guiding for over 20 years as a Ladybird Leader in Macroom, Co. Cork. During this time she also held the post of District Commissioner for six years. This enabled her to work closely with the Leaders in her District, organising district events and activities, recruiting and supporting new Leaders for Units. Her time as District Commissioner was also spent ensuring that training opportunities were taken up, encour- aging Leaders to undertake outdoor qualifications and solving issues as they arose. Josephine is now ready to embrace her new challenge as Regional Development Officer for the South West. She is looking forward to visiting Units and getting to know all the Leaders in the region.

Page 30 Trefoil News Autumn 2016 New era for Trefoil Guild

The image of Trefoil Guild is changing as we are moving to become an extra Branch of IGG - and a great way of keeping in touch with friends in Guiding.

Essentially, Trefoil Guild is a Branch specifically for adults over 18 in Guiding - for present as well as past members. Why don’t you keep in touch with your friends in Guiding by forming a Trefoil Guild group? The 'Evergreen Challenge' – a personal challenge for adults - can form the basis of the programme, or maybe a cup of coffee and a sharing of news and ideas is all that you want! Or are you a student moving to college? Why don't you track down fellow IGG members and form a group? Even when there isn't anyone in your locality, you can become a Lone Member, keep in touch with Guiding and even do the 'Evergreen Challenge'. From time to time during 2017, we plan to produce activities that all Trefoil Guild members can take part in. So watch this space. We even have a new scarf to make it easy to recognise us. Remember, there are no age limits for Trefoil Guild. You don't have to be over 30, 50 or 70 to join. Anyone over 18 can become a member of Trefoil Guild For further information on Trefoil Guild or any questions you may have –

Portmarnock Guides set up ICE project

Fifteen North East England Guides and three Leaders from different Units based all over North East England, came to Portmarnock recently for their ‘International Community Experience’ (ICE). They worked on three projects, set up by ourselves in Portmarnock. They were: 1. Portmarnock beach clean and planting of marram grass to help preserve the sand dunes on the beach. 2. Visit to Raheny house nursing home for the elderly to entertain the residents with song, individual chats and a craft. 3. Visit to Brackenstown Parish in Swords to put together funeral mass booklets for the parish and to see their food bank.
