Find us online at www.irishgirlguides.ie or 1 Chief’s Address When I look back over 2015, it seems to have been a busy and exciting year. One of the biggest milestones that showed how Irish Girl Guides (IGG) is a responsive and innovative organisation was the new Journey Programme for all Branches, which not only meets the needs of today’s girl but is also broad enough to challenge the girls of tomorrow. There was an incredible amount of work done to develop the outcomes, structure, activities, badges, resources and to organise the wonderful launch of the Journey Programme. There are no words to fully express our gratitude to all who contributed so, instead, we hope those involved will take great satisfaction in the knowledge that 12,000 girls and women are enjoying the fruits of your labour every week across Ireland! In 2015, IGG continued to evolve as a movement. In the past we have had the skills, the dedication and the commitment of many committee members and staff, but never before in history have we had the resources, technologies and innovation to solve the challenges that we do now. In an effort to solve the ever-increasing paperwork and administrative work of record-keeping and compliance that is required of Leaders, we embraced Online Guide Manager in 2015 for more than just our national census. The staggering fact that 9,000 meetings were planned online by 285 Units in the first year on OGM is hugely encouraging. It shows that providing innovative ways to be more efficient can help us be more effective with our time. IGG was very fortunate to have a very efficient Amanda O’Sullivan leading our OGM development and I thank her for her commitment and dedication to the project. We are involved in IGG because we believe in the value of Guiding, we believe we are helping to develop responsible citizens, and it is that individual and shared sense of responsibility to help the next generation that is so important. In all the technicalities and formalities that are an inherent part of an organisation our size, our ability to be practical, down-to-earth and never to lose our sense of humour or sense of reality is what keeps us together. This positive atmosphere of togetherness was evident at TWIGG - our Leaders’ conference last year. A highlight of the weekend was listening to Nicola Grinstead, the Chair of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) as she spoke with such infectious enthusiasm and passion for growing Guiding around the world. She commented on the wonderful atmosphere we had created and how relevant our trainings on mental health, good governance and future planning were. Throughout the year, starting at TWIGG, consultations were held with our members and stakeholders about the IGG that is needed in the future. Our 2012-2015 Strategic Plan was evaluated and reviewed and the whole experience was shaped into the next Strategic Plan #IGG2020. I have no doubt that the workload and time commitment of this new outcomes-focused plan will be challenging. However, I believe with collaboration, we can overcome those challenges. With the support of our volunteers and staff working to achieve our common goal, we will be able to succeed and it will be of great benefit to the girls and women of Ireland. Confident girls and women bring value to every community and group in which they are a part. Together, we can continue to make a difference through our membership of IGG.     ÅRSRAPPORT FOR SPEJDERNES NORDISKE SAMARBEJDSKOMITE (NSK) OG NSK STYREGRUPPE ÅRET 2016 I begyndelsen af 2016 overtog Danmark formandskabet i Spejdernes Nordiske Samar- bejdskomité (NSK) fra Island. Derfor varetages formandskabet for NSK samt styregrup- pen for samarbejdet af repræsentanter for den danske spejderbevægelse. Foråret 2016 bød på stor udskiftning i både styregruppe, formandskab og blandt de øvrige medlemmer af NSK. Den ene formand for NSK’s styregruppe blev udskiftet i maj. Formandsteamet for styre- gruppen består nu af Anne Lintrup og Daniel Berthelsen. Næsten samtidigt blev begge formænd for NSK udskiftet (ifm. den europæiske spejderkonference i juni 2016). De tid- ligere formænd havde valgt at søge nye frivillige opgaver i andre sammenhænge. De to nye formænd for NSK er Monica Lyby (international kommissionær for WAGGGS) og Kri- stian Kvist (international kommissionær for WOSM). Flere af NSK’s ordinære medlemmer (dvs. de internationale kommissionærer for de re- spektive nordiske lande) er ligeledes stoppet i løbet af året, og nye repræsentanter er trådt til. Det er en naturlig udvikling, da internationale kommissærer typisk udpeges af deres medlemsorganisationen med et tidsbegrænset mandat. Den løbende udskiftning har givet grobund for en løbende dialog om det nordiske spejderarbejde og samarbejdet i komitéen. Det har været en god og lærerig proces, og der har gennem året været en god og konstruktiv dialog, hvor alle de nordiske lande har været involveret. Vi har valgt at fortsætte med den supporter i Island, der har hjulpet Island med at opbygge hjemmesiden, og har oplevet et godt og konstruktivt samarbejde mellem supporteren og styregruppen om at få alle de ønskede ændringer implementeret.

    History of Irish Girl Guides Some Important Events in Irish Guiding 1911 First Guide Company started in Harold’s Cross, Dublin 1914 Brownies (initially called ‘Rosebuds’) were started 1914-1918 During these years Guides collected sphagnum moss and made it into dressings. They knitted for soldiers and also acted as hospital orderlies and helped in canteens. 1915 There were enough Guides to hold a display at the Metropolitan Hall, Dublin. Lord Baden-Powell attended a Rally in Merrion Square, Dublin. 1916 First ‘Camp’ was held in a cottage in Kilternan, Co. Dublin and a competition for a shield was held in Lord Iveagh’s grounds behind the National University, Earlsfort Terrace, Dublin. 1918 Rally with Guides, Scouts and Brownies. The Ross Cup was presented by Lady Ross. Originally it was presented to an individual Guide between the ages of 14 and 19 for needlework, child hygiene and meatless cookery. 1920 First Ranger Unit started. 1924 Rally in Lord Iveagh’s grounds – the salute being taken by Lady Powerscourt, then Deputy Chief Commissioner. 1925 Rally at the Metropolitan Hall, Dublin. 1926 An entertainment at the Theatre Royal, Dublin. 1927 One Leader and five Guides went to an International Camp for the first time, in Geneva. The first Sea Guides were registered in Clontarf, Dublin. 1928 Lord and Lady Baden-Powell were present at Rallies in Dublin and Cork. The first swimming gala was held at the Iveagh Baths, Dublin. 1929 Lady Powerscourt was appointed Chief Commissioner. As Ireland now had Dominion status the organisation was called ‘The Irish Free State Girl Guides’.

As a result of that first meeting it was decided to organise a similar meeting annually – 2015 will see the 19th meeting. The Network Meeting is an annual event organized by Europe Region WAGGGS and WOSM – European Region and inviting Guides and Scouts that represent their MO/NSOs in various platforms/organizations including their National Youth Councils. The aim of the meeting is to improve our members’ (MOs and NSOs) standing in and impact on society by supporting them in the field of External Relations. The network meetings provide the opportunity for volunteers that are working in the field of External Relations, communication, partnerships or other closely related areas from each Organisation to come together, to explore how conducting external relations can help our members to better fulfil the mission for Scouting and Guiding and to improve their position and recognition in society, in collaboration with other national partners.

  • Irish Girl Guides Annual Review 2016
    ANNUAL REVIEW 2016 1 Chief’s Address 2016 was our 105th year! And what a year it was – 12 months of enabling girls and women to develop as responsible citizens, 4 seasons of varied and purposeful activities, 52 weeks of young people reaching their goals and 366 days of IGG members living out their Guiding Promise across all 26 counties of Ireland. What a year! Back in 1911, when Lady Baden Powell called Girl Guiding a movement, I think she envisaged that the organisation would evolve and move with the times, reflecting the changes in society. We have done this time and time again over the intervening years and 2016 was no different. It was the beginning of our #IGG2020 Strategic Plan which brought together our evaluation of our previous four-year plan and a consultation with over 300 of our members, parents, supporters and donors. 2016 also provided us with an opportunity to incorporate Ireland’s 1916 commemorations into our wonderful National Guide Award ceremony in Croke Park. The symbolism of the Irish women of that time may inspire our younger members to aim high, dream big and work hard to achieve their goals. At a European level, Ireland was a case study for other organisations on the initiatives we are undertaking to provide Guiding opportunities for as many girls as possible. This involved presentations at the European Guide Conference in Oslo, Norway, and the feedback from our sister Guide organisations will help us to learn and grow as a movement. It was a great honour for me to represent IGG at this event along with Lorna Finnegan, Elizabeth Lynch and Aisling Claffey.

    Irish Girl Guides Outreach Pack Foreword Dear Leader, I am delighted to introduce our new Outreach Pack, which is an exciting resource tool for you to use with the girls in your unit and which will also enable you to reach out to potential members from minority ethnic communities. The Irish Girl Guides would like our membership to be reflective of the population in our country today so that the various minority groups in each local community are reflected in the membership of the nearest IGG Units. We recognise that efforts to attract and integrate girls from different national, ethnic and religious backgrounds must be tailored to meet local needs and conditions and should be carried out in collaboration with local communities. This Outreach Pack was created to help you to welcome girls and women from minority ethnic communities into your unit. As well as being a resource pack containing educational activities on a wide variety of topics to use with the girls in your unit, it also provides useful information and advice on how to make your unit more inclusive. The pack challenges you and the other leaders in your unit to reflect on your perceptions and practices in relation to working with girls and young women around identity and minority issues. It informs you about other cultures, gives advice on cross-cultural communication, and raises awareness of issues that may arise. Using this pack will ensure that you are better equipped to be more inclusive and responsive to the needs of the community in which you are now living and working.
