THE END OF AN ERA I received a phone call from Gaby in the beginning of May, and I was asked to come over as quickly as possible. At the time, I had no idea what this would be about. Thomas and I went to Dentergem the next day, where we were told that Gaby’s doctor had urged him to stop keeping pigeons. Christine was there as well, and she confirmed that Gaby had to make a really tough decision, in order to avoid any more strain on his lungs.

This type of bird can only be discovered in races with a lot of headwind, where they have to break away from the group to take the win. When Gaby sees these qualities in a pigeon, it will be given a chance in the breeding loft already at a very young age. That is what happened to Wittenbuik (3 x 1st Interprovincial), Bliksem, Rudy, and eventually Super Romeo and New Bliksem.
Gaby was always looking for new investments, and the same principles applied to any potential newcomer as well: he wanted pigeons capable of excelling in demanding condi- tions. He also wanted his investments to originate from pigeons with proven breeding qualities, and he did prefer pigeons that were to some extent related to his own breed. Their descendants were then put to the test in various races, before he would allow these newcomers to be mixed into his existing family.
Gaby prefers pigeons with soft plumage and a strong wing, with long, narrow and slightly rounded, supple primaries. It has been 37 years since Kleinen saw the light of day in Dentergem, and his direct descendants are still playing a lead role in competitions across the globe! This Kleinen dynasty has continued to deliver new race winners and ace pigeons season after season, earning Gaby Vandenabeele the status of an international champion. Rudy only had a brief racing career. He showed his exceptional talent for the first time as a yearling, which would also be his final season of racing.
