Fun Facts about Dr. Seuss • Dr Seuss’s real name was Theodor Seuss Geisel but his friends and family called him ‘Ted’. • Theodor Seuss Geisel was born on 2 March 1904 in Springfield, Massachusetts. • Ted worked as a cartoonist and then in advertising in the 1930s and 1940s but started contributing weekly political cartoons to a magazine called PM as the war approached. • The first book that was both written and illustrated by Theodor Seuss Geisel was And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street. The book was rejected 27 times before being published in 1937. • The Cat in the Hat was written as a result of a 1954 report published in Life magazine about illiteracy among school children. A text-book editor at a publishing company was concerned about the report and commissioned Ted to write a book which would appeal to children learning to read, using only 250 words given to him by the editor. • Ted was fascinated by research into how babies develop in the womb and whether they can hear and respond to the voices of their parents. He was delighted to find that The Cat in the Hat had been chosen by researchers to be read by parents to their babies while the babies were still in utero . • Writing as Dr Seuss, Theodor Seuss Geisel wrote and illustrated 44 children's books. and These books have been translated into more than 15 languages and have sold over 200 million copies around the world. • Geisel Award Manual Task Force the Ferguson Library, Stamford CT
THEODOR SEUSS GEISEL AWARD COMMITTEE MANUAL August 2015 1 Theodor Seuss Geisel Award Committee Manual—Revised August 2015 FOREWORD There are few things more amazing than watching a child learning to read. Books for beginning readers play a key role in this process, and the best ones ensure that these early reading experiences are both enjoyable and positive. The Theodor Seuss Geisel Award was established in 2004, to recognize those books for beginning readers which meet a particularly high standard of excellence First presented in 2006, the Award is funded by an endowment established through funding by the San Diego Foundation’s Dr. Seuss Fund, and administered by the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC). The award is given annually to the most distinguished American book for beginning readers. According to Gretchen Wronka, ALSC President 2004-2005 “There is a true magic to Geisel’s work, which is clear in the enduring power of such classics as The Cat in the Hat and Green Eggs and Ham. This new award honors that spirit and the authors and illustrators that delight and engage children in reading.” Shortly after the announcement of the first award, the President of ALSC appointed a Task Force to develop this award manual. The first two Chairs of the Geisel Award Selection Committee comprised the task force, and their experiences on the Geisel committee inform the content of this manual. In addition, special thanks go to the members of the first two Geisel Award committees who tested and interpreted the award criteria in their careful deliberations, and offered many helpful suggestions during the writing of the Manual.

NANNY Written by Nikyatu Jusu “For the mouths of her children quickly forgot the taste of her nipples, and years ago they had begun to look past her face into the nearest stretch of sky.” --Toni Morrison, Sula Cherry Rev. (7/18/20) 2. 1 INT. UPPER EAST SIDE APARTMENT - DAY 1 THE SOUND OF WATER RUNNING, unfettered, unencumbered--perhaps overflowing... We creep through a longish hallway littered with doorways and framed pictures. In these pictures are various poses of a PERFECT UPPER EAST SIDE FAMILY comprised of a WHITE COUPLE [30’s] and their angelic BABY BOY [4]. At the foot of one doorway, shards of light refract like luminescent knives off a pool of blood. We float past... A faintly discernible larger than life arachnid shadow ambles along hallway walls. Whispers. Barely discernible--then louder emanate from-- An AFRO-DOMINICAN WOMAN [45], at the end of the hallway. Her back is to us. She’s frantic. Desperate. She presses a phone to her ear--in her other hand: a top of the line, bloody, French Laguiole steak knife. She stumbles through tears. AFRO DOMINICAN WOMAN (spanish) I...don’t know. I don’t know what happened. I was tired. Confused. It wasn’t the boy. It was something else-- An INHUMAN GROAN echoes just behind her. She freezes, turning slowly and we see her face for the first time: palpable fear. Defense scratches etch her face. A SMALL SPIDER emerges from her ear, making its way across her cheek. She drops the bloody phone as she faces an ANIMALISTIC WAIL.

ENGLISH 2810: Television as Literature (v. 1.0) 9:00 – 10:15 T/Th | EH 229 Dr. Scott Rogers | [email protected] | EH 448 http://faculty.weber.edu/srogers The Course The average American watches about 5 hours of television a day. We are told that this is bad. We are told that television is bad for us, that it is bad for our families, and that it is wasting our time. But not all television is that way. Some television shows have what we might call “literary pretensions.” Shows such as Twin Peaks, Homicide: Life on the Street, The Wire, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Firefly, Veronica Mars, Battlestar Galactica, and LOST have been both critically acclaimed and the subject of much academic study. In this course, we shall examine a select few of these shows, watching complete seasons as if they were self-contained literary texts. In other words, in this course, you will watch TV and get credit for it. You will also learn to view television in an active and critical fashion, paying attention to the standard literary techniques (e.g. character, theme, symbol, plot) as well as televisual issues such as lighting, music, and camerawork. Texts Students will be expected to own, or have access to, the following: Firefly ($18 on amazon.com; free on hulu.com) and Serenity ($4 used on amazon.com) LOST season one ($25 on amazon.com; free on hulu.com or abc.com) Battlestar Galactica season one ($30 on amazon.com) It is in your best interest to buy or borrow these, if only to make it easier for you to go back and re-watch episodes for your assignments.

The proletariat have swarmed out, waving the red banners of Communism; private armies of unemployed, disaffected veterans - Freikorps- roam the streets thrashing the Communists. The Weimar Republic ts estaablished under the protection of the Freikorps. An explosion of radical music, theater, and art manifests the seething rancor and nervous energy of the people. The most insane, paralyzing inflation the world has known makes life a misery for the hungry, desperate populace . Although the flower of their kind lie buried in Flanders fields, a few aristocratic families preserve their privileged, even exquisite lives: boating parties at summer palaces, chamber music in great townhouses on Sunday afternoons. This is the rich backdrop of "A Princess in Berlin", a social novel in the grand tradition of e.g. Theodor Fontane in the Germany of the 19th century.
