    Alexandre Dumas (1802-1870) BLACK EUROPEANS: A British Library Online Gallery feature by guest curator Mike Phillips Thomas-Alexandre Dumas was the son of Marquis Alexandre-Antoine Davy de la Pailleterie, and a slave, Louise-Céssette Dumas, from the Caribbean island colony of Saint Domingue (or Santo Domingo, known as Haiti after 1804). Returning to France in 1780, De La Pailleterie consented to his son joining the army on condition that he did not use his name. Thomas-Alexandre Dumas’ courage and strength became legendary and by 1793 he was a general at 31. Following a successful campaign with Napoleon in Egypt, Dumas seemed set for a brilliant future but, because of his involvement in a republican plot, he was despatched to France, captured during the journey and imprisoned. Freed after 20 months, he was lame, deaf in one ear, partly paralysed and penniless. At the age of 35 he was obliged to retire to Villers-Cotterêts, a quiet village near Paris where he had married Marie-Louise Elizabeth Labouret in 1792. Alexandre was born on 24 July 1802. Madame Dumas was in raptures because of his fair skin and blue eyes. A few days before she had seen a puppet show with a black devil called Berlick, and she had been terrified at the prospect of giving birth to a Berlick. Alexandre adored his father, who died in 1806. Told that his father been taken away by God the four-year-old Dumas angrily declared his intention of going up to heaven and demanding satisfaction. In adult life he was to fictionalise many of his father’s real life exploits in his famous novel The Three Musketeers.

Le lecteur de La Reine Margot se sou- vient sans doute que Dumas avait conçu ce roman comme le premier volet d'une tétralogie1. L'épilogue, qui montrait Henri de Navarre fuyant Paris, mais pro- mis au trône par le parfumeur-astrologue René, laissait attendre audit lecteur une « suite » dans laquelle on verrait le futur Henri IV se lancer à la conquête du royaume, comme le redoutait tant Catherine de Médi- cis. Cette attente sera déçue : on ne verra Henri de Navarre que pour deux brèves apparitions dans La Dame de Monsoreau ; les craintes de la reine mère, au reste, semblent s'estomper, comme le personnage lui- même qui s'efface à l'arrière-plan, bien que Dumas affirme, dès le premier chapitre, qu'« elle était arrivée au comble de ses vœux : son fils bien-aimé était par- venu à ce trône qu'elle ambitionnait tant pour lui, ou plutôt pour elle ; et elle régnait sous son nom », ce que la suite du roman ne fera guère paraître. D'autres questions posées par le premier roman resteront en suspens : Dumas fait bien allusion, dans ce premier chapitre au sort de La Mole et de Coconnas, « dont nos 1. Newcastle upon Tyne, U.K.: Cambridge Scholars Publishing, 2011. viii + 251 pp. (Cloth US$ 59.99) March 1762. In the southwest corner of Saint-Domingue, a son was born to Alexandre Antoine Davy de la Pailleterie, a Norman aristocrat, and Marie Césette Dumas, a woman of color and most probably his slave. This son, Thomas Alexandre, would become one of the leading generals of the French Republic, a rival of Napoleon’s, and the father of Alexandre Dumas, “the most famous French writer of the nineteenth century” (p. 1). January 1781, almost twenty years after Thomas Alexandre’s birth, another Dumas of color, Marie Françoise Elisabeth, having married a colonist from Normandy, Jean Valentin Vastey, gave birth to a son, Jean Louis, in the northern province of the colony. In the decade and a half following the declaration of Haitian independence in 1804, Elisabeth’s light-skinned son, better known as the Baron de Vastey, would become a leading figure in the government of King Henry Christophe (1807-20), the first native-born historian of Haiti and a tireless publicist in a transatlantic media campaign to unmask the neocolonial ambitions of the French, who throughout this period were hell-bent on recovering their precious “pearl of the Antilles” from the black Jacobins who had wrested it from them in the name of uni- versal emancipation. Since their deaths, Dumas and Vastey—who have been traditionally (if, it would now appear on the basis of the latest genealogical research, erro- neously) identified as first cousins—have both suffered varying degrees of erasure from the historical record.
