8 MOORINGS There is free overnight mooring along the 20 miles of towpath. Craft mooring in unauthorised places or left (other than in attendance overnight as for normal recreational use) will, after appropriate cautions, be towed away and impounded, in accordance with Wey Navigations Conditions of Usage. Such action can incur a cost liability to recover the craft.

11 ACCEPTABLE SPEED All power boat users are reminded that the maximum speed on the Navigations is only 4mph (a brisk walking pace). On some sections of the Navigations, particularly the canal sections, speed will need further care and reduction if a wash is caused. Inexperienced and deep water boaters often have difficulty in understanding the complex relationship between speed, hull shape, depth of water and displacement but excessive speed is a major factor in damage to this waterway.

Abuse of speed regulations causes serious bank erosion and can lead to closure/restrictions to navigational sections for long periods. This leads to inconvenience to all users, not to mention cost in making good the damage.

The National Trust welcomes you to this tranquil property. We hope you will co-operate with our efforts to preserve the waterway’s country lane character by complying with the Conditions of Usage and drawing them to the attention of anyone not complying. We do ask you to read them carefully and to appreciate that the purpose is to protect the canal and to maintain public safety.

CONDITIONS OF USAGE

All persons using the River Wey and Godalming Navigations are subject to the provisions of the National Trust Acts 1907-1971, the Acts of Parliament of 1670 and 1760, “The Byelaws” and the following additional regulations. Where there is a conflict between the Conditions and the Byelaws, the Byelaws will prevail.

1 All power craft navigating or moored on the Navigations shall be properly insured, licensed and have a current Boat Safety Certificate.

2 All craft are to be registered and must display a current navigation licence. In the interests of safety or convenience owners are required to moor or move their craft and otherwise use the Navigations’ installations according to such instructions as are given from time to time by the Navigation staff.

3 Licences are issued at the discretion of the National Trust and may be withdrawn without reimbursement following the infringement of regulations or non-payment of fees.

4 Craft should not moor on outside of bends or within 50 metres of a lock. No craft to be left unattended overnight except at recognised mooring sites. Locks may not be operated nor may craft navigate on any day between the period half an hour after sunset and half an hour before sunrise, or at any time during flood conditions. Any exceptions by previous arrangement only with Navigation staff.

5 The National Trust reserves the right to move any craft and its moorings. When taking this action the National Trust is to be considered as an appointed agent of the craft owner.

6 RULE OF THE ROAD Keep to the right and make allowances for vessels of deeper draught and restricted manoeuvrability. Know the basic rules of the road for waterways.

7 THE MAXIMUM SPEED IS 4mph (a brisk walking pace). Craft must reduce speed if causing a wash, damage or danger to banks, moored craft, or other persons or property.

8 All powered craft are to be marked with a registered means of identification, e.g. name, number or initials of 75mm (3”) height minimum on each side of the bow and on the stern in a contrasting colour to the background. Tenders are to be marked on the stern the same as the parent craft. Traditional narrow boats and rowboats should bear a similar means of identification.

9 OPERATING LOCKS • Ensure that craft are adequately roped with engine switched off • A correct Navigation approved windlass should be used to operate the sluice gear • Both gates should be open for entry and exit

10 Motorised inflatables, motorised semi-rigid inflatables, water bikes, jet skis or similar are not permitted on the Navigations.

11 Unauthorised interference or operation of any of the water level regulating gates, sluices or locks renders the offender liable to prosecution.

12 Only the boat crew of a craft licensed to navigate may operate locks on the Navigations (Thames Lock only to be operated by National Trust staff).

13 No sanitary or other effluent or litter of any description is to be discharged into the Navigations or on National Trust property.

14 No craft may be used on the Navigations for residential purposes, commercial or private gain without special licence.

15 Use of metal detectors or digging on National Trust property, the Navigation beds, banks and towpaths is prohibited.

16 Persons bringing craft onto the Navigations do so at their own risk, and must carry appropriate insurance cover. The National Trust, its employees and servants, cannot be held responsible for loss or damage to any craft or contents or for personal injury whether caused by negligence or otherwise.

FAILURE TO OBSERVE RIVER WEY AND GODALMING NAVIGATIONS CONDITIONS OF USAGE may result in the withdrawal of the licence and removal of the craft from the Navigations.
