(TO OUR)

COME ^ HOME FOR SHABBAT!

As you may have heard, Shomrei Torah is beginning a program called “Come (to our) Home for Shabbat”. Our hope is to get as many families as possible sharing Shabbat dinners with each other, to build relationships and to learn from each other. The guests at the first dinner, held on November 15th, are encouraged to become hosts of the second dinner, which we will hopefully hold in January or March of 2014. The idea is not to reciprocate but to “pay it forward”.

If you are interested in participating in our first dinner, as a host or a guest, please contact Jackie Helfand at [email protected] or201-486-5654. Please note that this is a pilot project and we will continually be working out the “kinks”!

FAQs: How do I get involved as a host or a guest? Contact Jackie Helfand at 201-486-5654 or [email protected]

Do I have to have a kosher home to host? No, but we ask that only kosher meat be served, no meat and milk together and dairy or fish meals are also fine.

What if, as a guest, I require a kosher home? Let Jackie know and she will match you with a host with a kosher home.

Whom should I invite? Choose people that you know but would like to know better. Stumped on who to invite? Call or email Jackie Helfand and she’ll work on a match!

Help! I don’t know the prayers! Don’t worry! The idea is to be a guest first and then we’ll teach you how to be a host. BE A PART OF THIS SPECIAL PROJECT!!!

5 November 2013 OUR BAR MITZVAH

FOR THE MONTH OF NOVEMBER

My name is Josh. I am in the 8th grade at Schuyler Colfax Middle School. I like to snowboard and spend time with my family. One of my favorite things to do is to go to Giants tailgate parties with my dad and brother.

My Bar Mitzvah is on Shabbat Hanukkah, November 30, 2013. My parsha is Miketz. It talks about Joseph and his dream coat and how his brothers sold him because of jealousy. Learn from the brothers’ mistakes and just be nice to others.

This parsha is special to me because my brother and I have a special relationship and are always there for each other. My parents are also always there for me and for that I am grateful.

I would like to thank Rabbi Mark and my Bar Mitzvah tutor, Roberta Ort, for all of their help.

Please join us for my special day, November 30th.

Dear Families,

This year our Religious School will be concentrating on the value of Tzedakah in our lives. As part of the theme, your children have learned a new song “Ani v’atah neshanaeh et ha’olam” (you and I can change the world)!

Each student will have the opportunity to give to Tzedakah in their classrooms. Please en- courage your child to bring in Tzedakah each time they come to school. There is no set amount … nickels, dimes, quarters…all add up, especially when given generously and with a caring heart and, most important, when fulfilling the mitzvoth of Tzedakah anonymously and with the utmost of selfless motives.

During the course of the year, each class will hear about various worthwhile organizations and causes. If your child/family is involved with a charity, your child is encouraged to share the idea with his/her classmates.

At the end of the year, each class will review the different organizations they have learned about and decide where to allocate the monies that they have collected. Empowering a child to be a major player in the decision will give them a deeper connection to both the cause and the process.

In the classrooms: Our 7th grade students have begun learning about the mitzvah of putting on Tefillin with Rabbi Mark. If you have not already done so, please make sure that your child has Tefillin, either borrowed or bought. To order a pair, please contact Lee Ann Beck, at our synagogue gift shop, to place an order. A warm welcome to our new music teacher, Assaf Gleizner. As- saf was born in and came to the States 6 years ago. An accomplished piano and jazz performer and a part of the “Jazz Israeli Trio,” we are happy to have him share his tal- ents with our children. There will be no Religious School on Tuesday, November 5 (Election Day) and Sunday, November 10 (NJ Teacher’s Con- vention). Save the date…Sunday, November 17 from12:00 – 12:30 pm, parents are invited to visit the Religious School and observe the classrooms.

Thanksgiving and Chanukah….Together Again. This hasn’t happened since 1888 and will not happen again in our lifetimes.

Celebrating Chanukah, the Festival of Lights, has long been twined with the Christmas season, fueled by a carnivourous retail market. This year, let’s take advantage of this quirk of calendar mayhem…and think how can turkey and latkes, pilgrims and mesh?

The holiday of Thanksgiving began as dinner of gratitude, an acknowledgement of the bountiful gifts that the New World had brought the early settlers. And Chanukah, as a commemoration of freedom and autonomy for the Jewish people. Is it not enough to survive despite the odds? Or is the final act of these events a simple heartfelt “thank you”?

As we light the first candle of Chanukah, replete and A Thanksgiving Prayer stuffed with our Thanksgiving turkey, let’s remind By Rabbi Naomi Levy ourselves and our families of what we, as a Jewish community, have to be thankful for this Chanukah For the laughter of the children, season: For my own life breath,

11 November 2013 THANKSGIVING BASKETS for the Wayne Interfaith Network

The first Chanukkah light will be lit this year the evening before Thanksgiving. Fortunately, there is nothing inconsistent in celebrating the two holidays together and, in fact, it might well be a good teaching opportunity for the children concerning gratefulness.

Shomrei Torah continues its commitment to provide 40 or more bags or boxes of commercially made cookies for the Wayne Interfaith Network Thanksgiving Baskets. A flyer will be included in e-newsletters and a copy sent home with the students in the religious school. Sisterhood has generously provided a 'cookie jar' for cash donations at their events (including any Sunday morning Scrip sales). Any member may leave boxes/bags of cookies in the barrel in the lobby prior to Sunday, November 24th.

We will also accept frozen turkeys or frozen turkey breasts. Contact Lee Ann Beck to make arrangements for the turkeys. Do not leave any frozen items in the WIN Barrel . Also, we cannot accept fresh turkeys.

The Thanksgiving Baskets will be assembled and distributed on Sunday, November 24th at St. Timothy Fellowship Hall, Valley Rd., between 11 AM - 12:30 PM.

Please participate in the mitzvah of cookies! To paraphrase Ecclesiastes 9:7 - "Eat your cookies with joy!"

Thanks and Happy Thanksgiving! Betty Singer Lee Ann Beck

FAMILY PROMISE

256 Shomrei Torah families x 2 hrs = 512 hours

Our Family Promise guests will be with us for fewer than 168 hours during the week of December 22 - 29. A maximum total of 14 people, consisting of children and their immediate families, will be sleeping at Shomrei Torah during the evening and will go to Family Promise’s Family Center in Pas- saic during the day. These families are without a place to live at the moment and will be staying with various congregations throughout Passaic County while they try to find a home again. Have you ever sent a check to a charity? Ever wonder where it really goes? See firsthand how you can help someone else and it will take only as much time as you want to give. CAN YOU HELP? Some of the things we will need help with are: buying plates & cutlery, preparing meals, setting up the "bedrooms", having a male and female stay for 2 hour shifts while our guests are at our shul, 2 people to spend each night at the shul, and washing sheets and blankets after our guests leave. In December,we will post a schedule on our website showing the hours we will need volunteers. If you think you will have some time to help, please give Diane a call at 973-633-6769 or email her at [email protected]. If you are interested, we will be happy to tell you more about Family Prom- ise.

Family Promise is raising money with a TRICKY TRAY (more than 60 baskets so far) on Saturday, No- vember 9th (after Shabbat) at Preakness Reformed Church, 131 Church Lane, Wayne. Calling starts at 7:30 pm. $10 admission includes coffee, tea, cookies and 1 sheet of Tier 1 tickets. Contact Diane for more information.

Once again, the women of Sisterhood ate, chatted and learned as we gathered for our Annual Paid Up Membership evening. PA Leah Bienstock spoke to us about cosmetic options to slow down the effects of aging on our skin. She engaged us and generously raffled off anti-aging cream (the name escapes me; too bad there was no conversation about slowing down the ef- fects of aging on the memory), one Botox injection in her office and a supply of Latisse, for fuller eyelashes. Thanks to Elyce Berenzweig for coordinating the event and ordering the delicious meal (corned beef is a personal favorite) and centerpieces. And thanks to Tova Friede, whose organization and spirit make all her hard work appear so easy.

Plans for a Sisterhood Spa Night at Nails Plus on Hamburg Turnpike (next to China Paradise) were announced. Come down Monday, November 4, 4pm-7:30pm and relax with a manicure, pedicure or massage. Wine, cheese and snacks will be served. If we get a minimum of 20 at- tendees, Nails Plus will donate 25% of the proceeds to Sisterhood; with 21+ attendees, Nails Plus will donate 30%. If you decide to call ahead and book an appointment, please ask for Jas- mine and let her know you’re with Shomrei Torah Sisterhood. Many thanks to Judy Weil for con- ceiving and chairing this ‘Spa-cial’ event.

Coffee, tea or . . . okay, tea it is! Sarah Blecherman invites you all to a Sisterhood Tea at High SocieTea, 20 Old Newark Pompton Turnpike in Wayne, on Thursday, December 12 between 6pm-8pm. Come to steep, sip, talk and eat. Cost per person is $36. RSVP to Sa- [email protected] by December 1 for this fun evening.

Jackie Helfand is already gearing up for Sisterhood Shabbat on Saturday, January 25. If you are interested in participating in any way, please contact Jackie and she will give you a Hebrew or English-speaking part.

Renee Lesser will again be selling scrip in the synagogue lobby Sundays in November. This is, by far, our easiest fundraiser. YOU buy gift cards at their face value and, for the same price you’d pay anywhere, Shomrei Torah benefits with a percentage of each purchase. Check out our vendor list, including Fairway and a host of others to see how and where you can shop and support Shomrei.

There’s lots of stuff going on with Sisterhood. Hope to see you at some or all of the events up- coming.

Approximately 165 bags of paper goods, personal care items, etc. were collected during the Operation Isaiah Basic Necessities Drive during the High Holidays.

Additionally, $613 (no joke!) was collected and donated to the Wayne Interfaith Network for its ongoing work. Thank you to all those who participated in these mitzvot. We encourage all congregants to contin- ue to bring non-perishable food and other basic necessities throughout the year, to be deposited in the large barrel in the Lobby.

These exceptionally 'early' High Holidays brought a specific challenge. Neither the Religious School nor the youth groups were in session prior to Rosh Hashanah, so we had to take extra steps to be sure to include our young people in this special mitzvah. For their objective advice, we want to thank Renee Lesser for brainstorming with 'the usual suspects' on a Sunday morning way back in June, and Andy Si- mon for putting his finger on logistical conflicts and coming up with alternative solutions via our various 'e -conferences'. Both of you made the rest of the planning much, much easier. As always, we thank Rab- bi Mark, who enthusiastically continues to support all our Wayne Interfaith Network activities. Thanks also to Principal Karen Weiss for her can-do, ever-ready willingness to have the Religious School partici- pate. Without blinking an eye, our Synagogue Administrator, Melody Sandor, graciously took care of our Operation Isaiah publicity amidst the myriad responsibilities she needed to attend to for the holi- days. "Temple Donna", who takes care of the 'office stuff" that needs to get done; our custodian Gloria, who takes great care in bringing the variety of bags to either the kitchen or library; and our new custodi- an Fred, who makes everything he does look easy— to each of them, we say 'thank you'. You are an essential part of this whole event and your assistance is deeply appreciated.

Our Monday night shlepping crew consisted of Renee Lesser, Mark Kass, and (President) Karen Weiss. We were also assisted by a Lamed Vavnik (one of 36 souls who wander the earth, anonymously doing good deeds).

The packing, sorting, and car loading and/or driving crew of adults and teens included Karen Weiss (President), Jessica Fleischer, Diane Seltzer, Arlene Marks, Josh Blecherman, Kayla Blecherman, Paul Beck, Nancy Simon and, once again, the Lamed Vavnik.

Kitah Zayin and the Hebrew High were phenomenal, completing the sorting/packing in an historic 20 minutes! Our Youth Groups have started a fun new year. Chaverim (grades K-5) held its first event on September 29th. The children gathered for lunch and delicious treats in the social hall immediate- ly after Religious School. Afterwards, we all went to Monster Mini Golf in Fairfield for an afternoon of mini golf, arcade games and fun prizes. We had a lot of fun. Please join us on Sunday, Octo- ber 27th from 3:00-4:30 for our Food Olympics. There will be many exciting activities (and lots of yummy food!) for the children to enjoy. Please RSVP so that we can plan accordingly.

Our Kadima/USY group (grades 6-12) kicked off its year with a sweet Sukkot celebration, as eve- ryone made his/her own delicious Sukkot out of candy and treats. Our Kadima/USY leader, Shai Lewitter, had an opportunity to speak to our Hebrew High students on October 8th to talk about our programs, as we hope to increase participation at both our local and regional events. This is truly a great opportunity to meet other Jewish youth and spend time with friends while enjoying fun activities. The next event is a favorite…Cupcake Wars on October 27th from 7:00-8:30.

We hope to see you at our upcoming events!

To all of our friends at Shomrei Torah:

I am very grateful for the outpouring of sympathy and support you have shown us after my Mom’s recent passing. We were overwhelmed with the number of cards and donations that were sent, many from people who we see only once or twice a year at High Holiday services. Equally impressive was the show of support at the two evenings of Shiva at our house. It really helped our spirits. For those that came, I am sorry the rope tow was out of order (you had to be there to get it). Most importantly, your support has deeply affected my sensitivity to others in our community who have also lost loved ones. Once again, thanks for showing us there is still love and support in our Jewish Community. The Terrys

MAKE A DONATION TO SHOMREI TORAH THROUGH STOCK TRANSFERS

Many people believe that the only way to make a charitable donation to Shomrei Torah is with a check or credit card. One of our members discovered a new way to make her donation to our Restore to Zachor Holocaust Torah Restoration project that felt meaningful. Please read about Jeanne’s experience.

“It was with excitement and a sense of satisfaction that I learned from Donna, in the Shomrei Torah office, that my wire transfer of appreciated stock had been completed for our Holocaust Torah Restoration project.

When I discussed stock transfer with my financial advisor, his immediate response ignited my imagination. He noted that I had enjoyed a significant appreciation in Verizon stock. Since the Torah is the vehicle through which God chose to communicate with us, it seemed entirely appropriate to dedicate communications stock to restore HIS WORD and continue his service. I liked that concept.”

With a joyful heart, Jeanne Jaffe

We have set up a stock transfer system and now you can make any donation (High Holiday Appeal/President’s Council/Restore to Zachor, etc.) this way! Contact Melody for more information- 973.696.2500

“Celebrations of Chanukah Around the World” On Tuesday, November 12th, after the 7:45 pm minyan, the Adult Ed committee will host a pro- gram to discuss celebrations of Hanukah around the world.

Do Polish Jews give gifts to their children every night? Do kids in the (former) Soviet Union play with dreidels? Do Israelis on kibbutzim observe the holiday in different ways than Israelis in the big cities? How about Syrian Jews, do their practices have particular characteristics?

Get your answers to these and other questions from a discussion by a group of Shomrei Torah members who grew up in these countries and will give first hand accounts of how it was done overseas.

Please join us for the discussion and a reception afterwards with a foretaste of the good things to eat that Chanukah brings!
