Second Schedule Environmental Impact SECOND SCHEDULE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT ASSESSMENT (EIA) FOR PROPOSED RUBBER FOREST PLANTATION ON PARTS OF COMPARTMENT 126, 131 & 132 (BLOCK 1) AND PARTS OF COMPARTMENT 125, 126, CHAPTER 6 131 &132 (BLOCK 2) WITH AN AREA OF 1,600.00 HECTARES (3,953.67 ACRES) AT PIAH FOREST RESERVE, DISTRICT OF HUTAN KUALA KANGSAR, PERAK DARUL RIDZUAN CHAPTER 6 : EXISTING ENVIRONMENT 6.1 INTRODUCTION The description of the existing environment is based on data obtained from field studies and measurements, interviews and observations conducted by the EIA team. This was supplemented with published and unpublished data related to the Project site obtained from various sources. This section contains information pertaining to the physical, biological and social-economic within 5 km radius. The zone of study for the particular project site is stipulated within 5 km radius as shown in Figure 6.1. The impacts and mitigating measures will be further discussed in the Chapter 7 and Chapter 8. 6.2 LANDUSE Figure 6.2 shows the Landuse Map while and Table 6.1 shows the summary of landuse activities within 5km radius from the Project site. Basically, the project site is within area Air Chepam Forest Reserve and Piah Forest Reserve which is secondary forest surrounded with flora and fauna. There are no other activities noted within the impact zone five (5) km surrounding the project area. Plate 6.1 to Plate 6.4 shows the visual land use and surrounding within the project site. Existing landuse of the proposed site is forest, hill and agricultural areas. Based on Rancangan Tempatan Daerah Hulu Perak 2030 (Gazette No.: 2106) which has been gazetted on 3rd August 2017, the proposed site is located in Blok Perancangan (BP) 5 Kenering, Blok Perancangan Kecil (BPK) 5.4: Air Ganda which zoned as forest (Hutan Simpan Air Chepam) and Blok Perancangan (BP) 8: Lenggong, Blok Perancangan Kecil (BPK) 8.5: Lenggong Agro Valley which zoned as forest (Hutan Simpan Piah). Generally, the elevations of the Project site vary from190m to 890 m above mean sea level (MSL). The elevation mapping is presented in Figure 6.5. Table 6.2 shows the summary of slope analysis of the Project Site. The classification of slope is based on the terrain classes which adapted from Garis Panduan Perancangan Pembangunan di Kawasan Bukit dan Tanah Tinggi (JPBD 2009). Based on the slope analysis, about 73.3% of the area is classified under Class I and II, which indicates slopes lower than 25° that make up the total of 1,171.63 hectares. While, the remaining 26.7% of the area (428.37 hectares) is classified under the slope >25° which is unsuitable for plantation. Slope more than 25° is not viable for agriculture activities due to high cost of maintenance, high potential of soil erosion and low nutrient source. In general, the site is underlain by metamorphic rock and the age of this formation is Palaeozoic, in Silurian-Ordovician era, as shown in Figure 6.6. Lower Palaeozoic rocks are confined to the western part of the peninsula, and Upper Palaeozoic rocks are found in all three belts in the tripartite peninsular divisions, the most complete sequence of Palaeozoic sedimentary rocks, ranging in age from Upper Cambrian to Upper Permian, is exposed in the North-western Domain of the Western Belt, in Langkawi, Kedah and Perlis. These formations further south in the Western Belt are the Silurian to Permian Kinta Limestone, Terolak Formation and Kati formation in Perak, and the Lower Palaeozoic Dinding and Hawthornden Schists and Kuala Lumpur Limestone and Carboniferous to Permian Kenny Hill Formation in Selangor. Rocks of the Bentong Group, consisting of Pilah Schist and its correlatives and the Karak Formation, form an unbroken belt along the eastern foothills of the Main Range. Schist, phyllite, slate, limestone and minor intercalations of sandstone and volcanic are present, but the majority at the site is schist.

    Collaboration, Christian Mission and Contextualisation: The Overseas Missionary Fellowship in West Malaysia from 1952 to 1977 Allen MCCLYMONT A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of Kingston University for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History. Submitted June 2021 ABSTRACT The rise of communism in China began a chain of events which eventually led to the largest influx of Protestant missionaries into Malaya and Singapore in their history. During the Malayan Emergency (1948-1960), a key part of the British Government’s strategy to defeat communist insurgents was the relocation of more than 580,000 predominantly Chinese rural migrants into what became known as the ‘New Villages’. This thesis examines the response of the Overseas Missionary Fellowship (OMF), as a representative of the Protestant missionary enterprise, to an invitation from the Government to serve in the New Villages. It focuses on the period between their arrival in 1952 and 1977, when the majority of missionaries had left the country, and assesses how successful the OMF was in fulfilling its own expectation and those of the Government that invited them. It concludes that in seeking to fulfil Government expectation, residential missionaries were an influential presence, a presence which contributed to the ongoing viability of the New Villages after their establishment and beyond Independence. It challenges the portrayal of Protestant missionaries as cultural imperialists as an outdated paradigm with which to assess their role. By living in the New Villages under the same restrictions as everyone else, missionaries unconsciously became conduits of Western culture and ideas. At the same time, through learning local languages and supporting indigenous agency, they encouraged New Village inhabitants to adapt to Malaysian society, while also retaining their Chinese identity.

    REPTILIA Order OPHIDIA (Snakes) I. Family COLUBRIDAE Ahaetulla prasina Green Vine Snake This snake was found in Renah Kayu Embun and Napal Licin survey sites at elevation 1400 meters asl and 300 meters asl respectively. Usually it can be seen in degraded habitat including plantation, secondary growth and house compounds, to primary rain forest (Inger and Stuebing, 2005; Kurniati, 2003). It occurs from lowlands up to mountain forests over 1500 meters asl (Kurniati et al., 2001; Kurniati, 2003). It is common species at low elevation (Inger and Stuebing, 2005), but become rare at high elevation such as Renah Kayu Embun survey site. This species is known from South-east Asia, East Indies (Sulawesi and The Lesser Sunda) (Stuebing and Inger, 1999: de Lang and Vogel, 2005). Figure 91. A. prasina (Photograph by H. Kurniati). Amphiesma sp This undescribed snake was found in Muara Labuh survey site at elevation 800 meters asl. It was a nocturnal snake that inhabited strong moving stream bank. The morphology of this snake is similar to A. kerinciense (David and Das, 2003). Possibly, it is a new species, but future study is needed. Figure 92. Amphiesma sp from Muara Labuh (Photograph by H. Kurniati). Aplopeltura boa Blunt-headed Tree Snake This snake was found in Upper Rupit River and Tapan survey sites at elevation 150 meters asl and 550 meters asl respectively. It inhabited lowland primary rain forest. It occurs at elevation between sea level to 1200 meters asl (Kurniati, 2003), but it is confined to be lowland. In Tapan survey site, it was rarely observed.
