Hermann Schleich & Kaluram Rai xd{g :NofOv tyf sfn'/fd /fO{ Published by ARCO-Nepal reg. soc. k|sfzs cfsf{] g]kfn O=eL= 1 Amphibians and Reptiles Class: Reptilia, Reptiles, N: Sarisripaharu Vertebrates with mostly 4 limbs; normally 5 clawed digits. Limbs are lacking in snakes. There are many lizards with reduced limbs and digits. Reptile skin is covered by horny structures of different size (scales, plates, granules, tubercles etc.) and provided with few glands. All main reptilian groups are represented in Nepal: Crocodiles (Order Crocodylia) with 2 species, turtles and tortoises (Order Testudines) with about 15, and scaled reptiles (Order Squamata) with about 40 lizard and about 70 snake species. Order Crocodylia - Crocodiles Crocodiles, N: Gohiharu Large to very large aquatic reptiles with a laterally flattened tail and with digits webbed; 5 fingers and 4 toes. Eyes and nostrils are placed on the highest parts of the head. The ears can be closed with a valve. The skin is covered with thick horny plates which are – at least dorsally – underlain with an armour of flat bones. They lay large clutches of oval eggs, being deposited in nests which are dug into sand or consist of large mounds of rotting plants. The nests are guarded by adults. When the eggs are close to hatching, the juveniles inside them start squawking. At this acoustic signal a parent opens the nest, even helps the juveniles out of the eggshell. -

This small booklet introduces the few amphibians and many reptiles found in the Chilka Lake, on its several islands and hills, and along the shoreline. Literally, thousands of tourists visit the Chilka Lake round the year. Groups of school boys and girls come here regularly. It is necessary to tell them about the fauna of the lagoon and the ways of its wild denizens. -

Species Account
REPTILIA Order OPHIDIA (Snakes) I. Family COLUBRIDAE Ahaetulla prasina Green Vine Snake This snake was found in Renah Kayu Embun and Napal Licin survey sites at elevation 1400 meters asl and 300 meters asl respectively. Usually it can be seen in degraded habitat including plantation, secondary growth and house compounds, to primary rain forest (Inger and Stuebing, 2005; Kurniati, 2003). It occurs from lowlands up to mountain forests over 1500 meters asl (Kurniati et al., 2001; Kurniati, 2003). It is common species at low elevation (Inger and Stuebing, 2005), but become rare at high elevation such as Renah Kayu Embun survey site. This species is known from South-east Asia, East Indies (Sulawesi and The Lesser Sunda) (Stuebing and Inger, 1999: de Lang and Vogel, 2005). Figure 91. A. prasina (Photograph by H. Kurniati). Amphiesma sp This undescribed snake was found in Muara Labuh survey site at elevation 800 meters asl. It was a nocturnal snake that inhabited strong moving stream bank. The morphology of this snake is similar to A. kerinciense (David and Das, 2003). Possibly, it is a new species, but future study is needed. Figure 92. Amphiesma sp from Muara Labuh (Photograph by H. Kurniati). Aplopeltura boa Blunt-headed Tree Snake This snake was found in Upper Rupit River and Tapan survey sites at elevation 150 meters asl and 550 meters asl respectively. It inhabited lowland primary rain forest. It occurs at elevation between sea level to 1200 meters asl (Kurniati, 2003), but it is confined to be lowland. In Tapan survey site, it was rarely observed. -

As a result of active herpetological research, the number of species has steadily increased in recent years. I present here a new checklist of amphibian and reptile species distributed in Turkey, revising the nomenclature to reflect the latest taxonomic knowledge. In addition, information about the systematics of many species is also given. In total 35 (19.4%) amphibian and 145 Received: 8 October 2020 (80.6%) reptile species comprise the Turkish herpetofauna. While 38 species have not been threat-assessed by the IUCN, 92 of the 180 Turkish herpetofaunal species are of Least Concern (LC), 13 are Near Threatened (NT), 10 are Vulnerable (VU), 14 are Endangered (EN), and 7 are Critically Endangered (CR). -

Interestingly, subsequent studies have recognized another morphologically similar species, J. tricarinata, from the same locality in Tibet based on photographic evidence only. Despite these reports, no studies have examined the referred specimens for either record to confirm their taxonomic identifications with robust comparisons to congener species. Here, we examine the referred specimen of the record of J. kumaonensis from southeastern Tibet, China; recently collected specimens from the same locality in southeastern Tibet; type specimens; and topotypic specimens of both J. kumaonensis and J. tricarinata, to clarify the taxonomic identity of the focal population from southeastern Tibet, China. -
