The Pirra Jungku Project is a collaboration between the Karajarri Rangers, Environs Kimberley Pirra Jungku Project and the Threatened Species Recovery Hub with funding from the Australian Government’s National Environmental Science Program and the species guide Western Australian Government’s NRM Program. Reptiles * Asterix means the animal can be tricky to ID. Take a good photo, or bring it back to camp for checking, but do this as a last resort. Don’t bring back any snakes, in case they are poisonous. Dragons Upright posture (stick their heads up), have small, rough scales, each leg has 5 clawed fingers/toes. BIAWAK Journal of Varanid Biology and Husbandry Volume 11 Number 1 ISSN: 1936-296X On the Cover: Varanus douarrha The individuals depicted on the cover and inset of this issue represent a recently redescribed species of monitor lizard, Varanus douarrha (Lesson, 1830), which origi- nates from New Ireland, in the Bismark Archipelago of Papua New Guinea. Although originally discovered and described by René Lesson in 1830, the holotype was lost on its way to France when the ship it was traveling on became shipwrecked at the Cape of Good Hope. Since then, without a holotype for comparitive studies, it has been assumed that the monitors on New Ireland repre- sented V. indicus or V. finschi. Recent field investiga- tions by Valter Weijola in New Ireland and the Bismark Archipelago and phylogenetic analyses of recently col- lected specimens have reaffirmed Lesson’s original clas- sification of this animal as a distinct species. The V. douarrha depicted here were photographed by Valter Weijola on 17 July and 9 August 2012 near Fis- soa on the northern coast of New Ireland. In India reptilian assemblage is represented by the orders Crocodylia, Testudines and Sqatnata. The snake fauna conlprises of tcn families, of these family Typhlopidae and Boidae are listed in the papcr. Each species is supplemented with an exhaustive synonyrny along with rClnarks pertaining to the rarity and status. The studies on Indian Reptiles have been enriched with notable contribulions by several \VOrKers both during the pre and post independent India. We wi11 be failing in our duty if we do not cite the works notably by Das (1991, 1995, 2003), Murthy (1986, 1990, 1992) Sharanla (197 I 1976, 1977, 2003), Biswas (1965, 1977), and Sanyal (1991, 1993, 2006) to mention only a few in the unending list of the galaxy of workers in the recent times. However \ve owe our deep debt of gratitude to the pioneering herpetologists of British India who laid the foundation of Indian Herpetology, notably Boulenger (1890, 1893 ) Nelson Annandale (1876-1924) Wall (1909-1923) and M. A. Smith. (1875-1958). The contribution of Wallach (1999, 2003) Nassballln (1980) and the book "Snake species of the world" dealing with extcnsive refcrence work C0111pi led by Mc Diarnlid, Campbell and T A. TOllre (1999) contributed to our knowledge on Typhlopidae and Boidae. -

Its goals include the conservation of biological diversity and wilderness in the Zambezi Basin through the application of sustainable, scientifically sound natural resource management strategies. -

In India, all the three living orders of reptiles have their representatives - Crocodylia (crocodiles), Testudines (turtles and tortoises) and Squamata (lizards and snakes). The diversified climate, varying vegetation and different types of soil in the country form a wide range of biotopes that support a highly diversified reptilian fauna. The Western Ghats, Eastern Himalaya, and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands are endowed with varied and unique reptilian fauna. The monumental works on Indian reptiles are, ‘The Reptiles of British India’ by Gunther (1864), ‘Fauna of British India - ‘Reptilia and Batrachia’ by Boulenger (1890) and Smith (1931, 1935, 1943). The work of Smith stood the test of time and forms the standard work on the subject. Further contributions were made by Tiwari & Biswas (1973), Sharma (1977, 1978, 1981, 1998, 2002, 2007), Murthy (1985, 1994, 2010), Das (1991, 1994, 1996, 1997, 2003), Tikedar & Sharma (1992), Das & Bauer (2000), Das & Sengupta (2000), Daniel (2002), Whitaker and Captain (2004), Sharma (2007), Thrope et. al. SUBBA RAo Department of Environmental Sciences, Andhra University, Visakhapatnam-530 003, India ABSTRACT. Varied physiographic and climatic conditions in the Eastern Ghats region of India once sup ported biodiverse flora, fauna, and habitats. Apart from mangrove forests, the Eastern Ghats has largely deciduous forests, dry and moist, alternately occupying scrub jungles. Because of deforestation and the swidden or shifting cultivation practiced by tribal groups, dense forests are now limited to only a few pockets. As a result, wildlife species are affected by an increasing threat to their survival. For instance, the cheetah is now extinct in the region, and the tiger is being pushed to the edge. Diversity is drastically reduced among plants, animals, and habitats. The author reports on the current status of species richness among faunal groups in the region.
